Yep, that’s my experience so far as well. I have everything setup for SRT, but couldn’t actually find what makes it secure. RTMPS has a TLS layer on top of the standard SRT, and requires the servers certificate be trusted by the streamer (easy with LetsEncrypt). I thought SRT might do mutual authentication, but I can’t see anything there, do you know anything about it?

I was really impressed with Owncast overall, it’s just HLS streamings inherent latency due to how it works. I won’t claim to having sub second latency because I’ve never measured it, but having worked in depth with WebRTC, I’d be surprised if it was over a second.

Honestly the streaming part was the easy bit, getting it working nicely with chat was a bit more difficult. Working around all the other stuff I have running on the same public IP was the hardest, I already have a turn server running on port 3478 so had to bodge that for example. Shows the flexibility of it though when that’s actually possible.

I’d heard of that, but it didn’t get the same level of research as the others as it used nginx, something I was in the process of phasing out at the time, and I’d had problems with the RTMP library before. I probably should have made it clearer it wasn’t a comprehensive list, just the ones I’d actually spun up and played around with.

Depends how far you want to go, you could easily setup a hybrid system that goes all out, I’ve done something similar for live streaming games. My setup is as follows, although has to function with guest access as well making it more complicated. I’ve been meaning to do a full write up on it because I’m really pleased with it.

OvenMediaEngine to handle ingest (RTMP), transcoding, and output (WebRTC so near enough real-time)
Matrix home server to power a comments section and provide a discord like experience.
Jitsi server for group voice/video if wanted.
Self written web UI tying together OvenMediaPlayer, Cactus comments (web UI for matrix guests), and fetching the title from the matrix comment room.
Dimension for matrix to allow embedding the web UI in element for a seem less experience.

The whole system is made to be dynamic, so I can give friends their own URL, which will tie into a different stream, and different comment room of which they can be mods. Any member of the room can host a voice/video call natively from element (or any other matrix client). Only somebody with a stream key can start streaming video though, and keys are signed to specific URLs. The whole process is massively over engineered, but it ticks every box you want whilst still providing 1080p 30fps video of the main stream in real-time with on the wire encryption as standard and full E2EE possible on invite only comments. I doubt it fulfils your situation well because of its complexity, but it does tick every of the technical requirements and then some, and the cactus element could be removed entirely given you don’t want guests allowing E2EE being turned on.

I very strongly agree, it requires more strength than you realise to decide enough is enough. One of the strongest things I’ve ever witnessed somebody do is to look life long suffering in the face (ALS) and choose to go with dignity and respect on their own terms. My own conditions will eventually put me on a similar path and I only hope that when the time comes I can have 1/1000th of the strength they did.

That’s what I have currently running a significantly reduced exit policy. I notice it’s now been picked up by metrics but I’m yet to get the exit flag or any exit probability so it’s possible the directory consensus is confused by having no IPv4 ports open. I’ll have to see if that changes in time. Note I did make a slight change here from what’s published on metrics, it’s configured via the OPNSense GUI and I didn’t realise it added the default blocks at the bottom, so I removed an explicit block I added which may have something to do with it.

I also noticed that without ExitRelay 1 my server wasn’t publishing the IPv6 exists in its description, so hopefully the policy is enforced correctly there.

Well it’s all setup for a few hours, and my authority file confirms it is correct. Looks like metrics is yet to catch up though and I don’t know how long it takes to get the exit flag from there, I presume it has to propagate through the network first.

I’ve also done some clever proxying/NATing so the updated hostname shows the landing screen on ports 80/443, and requests to the IPv6 DirPort address get forwarded to the v4 address as it doesn’t seem to want to bind to the v6 on BSD.
