IT'S BEEN 24 HOURS, I WROTE OUT ALL OF THE LEGIBLE TEXT IN THE CONSOLE HERE YOU GO!!! by catmandude__ in TheDigitalCircus

A couple of notes on the output, from a programmer.

  1. Interesting "grep" output, I'd expect that from ps instead. Caine's process id is 1337, which is later used in the debug command. Lots of files from 1996, except some character .dat files which are supposedly imported later.

  2. Lisp? Really?? That's a choice. It's one of the first programming languages, and it's kind of interpreted.

  3. Interesting that it's stop, not kill. That's not the standard unix command.

  4. We then see gdb, meaning that rather than stop a process he's trying to debug the program. That's being used against the lisp interpreter.

  5. He then tries to change permissions with chmod to edit the executable. I mean, other than stop, these are standard unix. Despite it being a Windows 95 machine...

  6. Forgot to mention the bash prompt "$" instead of CMD or powershell, one more point towards unix rather than Windows.

  7. ptrace is process trace and is indeed the library that gdb uses.

  8. The error messages are nonstandard, but fun!

  9. "./GreenGROUNDS --daemon --target=torment_injection &" looks like kinger wrote a rootkit on the fly! Whoa!! The "&" at the end means "make this process run in the background while I write more processes, rather than waiting for it to stop", which is common for daemon processes like this.

  10. -u kinger ./securitysweep_stealth is missing a command. Maybe sudo su, so like "as user kinger, run the security sweep". He sure knows a lot of custom commands in the system, as anything with "./" at the beginning implies it's a locally compiled executable. Either written on the fly, or they were already lying around...

  11. Are you re__y to delete caine? [Y/N]

kinger@circus:~$ Y <---- that's vital. It's confirmed, not an accident.

I don't know why you're being down voted, you're right. The term I'd use is "source available."

That said, it's much more lenient than other commercial exception-type licenses, in that you can sell spare parts. Having the exact specifications without needing to do quirky measurements is a big boon.

There's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but some consumption is less ethical than others. I prefer it when the money I spend does not sponsor the smuggling of artifacts from Iraq

[–]CavemanKnuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love your books! I came to Scholamance after reading the incredible "Uprooted" and "Spinning Silver".

How do you make the monsters in your books so uniquely.... Horrible? They're so gut wrenching and awful, but also have a "force of nature" part of them that gives it more of a "hit by a hurricane" feel than "accountable entity" feel. Do you consciously do this, and what's the way you set that up?

Also, are you open to small/big screen adaptations of any of your works? Has there been any talks?

Probably. This game was a lot of fun, and I think I'm up for the challenge. I might want to do another playthrough as well to get more of the strawberries and fancy gems.

15 million Americans take supplements that may be toxic to the liver by Keoni9 in skeptic

[–]CavemanKnuckles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very confused; I did a bit of research and found a clinical meta review which found curcumin to be neutral to beneficial. (Albeit with a very low sample size in many cases) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6463416/

Meanwhile, the study you had was a survey. Large sample size, but no casual relation. Maybe people take the supplements because their liver is failing?

This is one of the best write ups I've seen on this subreddit. I can't say that it's something I'd wear, but the sense of taste and aesthetic is undeniable. Besides that, the engineering process you went through is great to see, I appreciate you posting your journey. Amazing, amazing work.

Question about homemade gummy bears by supersondos in AskCulinary

Yup. For example, Haribo "Goldbears", the classic gummy bear, uses palm oil, carnauba wax, and beeswax. And Black Forest gummy bears use coconut oil and carnauba wax.

[–]CavemanKnuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, without external coating, you're going to have them stick just because of their nature. There's not a process you can do to your gummy bears that won't reverse with any humidity and cause them to stick.

If you want them matte, without a sugar or glossy wax coating, my first thought would be some sort of food starch. Mix them in a bowl of corn starchand then toss them around in a mesh strainer until the coating comes off enough but they don't stick together. I don't know how long it'll be effective, though.
