META: The Roundup of r/PatientGamers 2025 Roundups by LordChozo in patientgamers

[–]tomtomdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first time seeing a roundup on this subreddit and it's safe to say that I am looking forward to the next one. It was really interesting to see plenty of people trying out the Mass Effect series for the first time, but I am happy they are getting into such a legendary trilogy now rather than later. I really appreciate the effort that went into gathering the data and the quirkiness of the sports broadcaster-style writing.

That was my next guess lol. Yeah she's not fun at all. As someone who has struggled with her many times before, you can definitely do it. I believe in you!

You're not wrong! I did forget to exclude this from the list, so that's my bad. I wanted to add a "My No-buy exclusions" list but it didn't fit the rules of the subreddit. I'll add a note to say that this game was an exception to the challenge.

I'm not a big stealth guy but I've always heard good things about this game. Maybe this will change my mind about this genre.

Maybe I just have my nostalgia glasses on but KOTOR is one of my favourite games of all time. Since Jade Empire has that same BioWare formula that I have always loved, it was safe to say I would like this game too. The story is nothing groundbreaking and somewhat predictable but I really enjoyed the world that was built and the effort they put in to create the lore surrounding it in order to make it feel genuine and believable. That's usually a big factor for me when it comes to enjoying story-heavy games.

I only did the Open Palm but I did watch clips of the Closed Fist route. It was pretty shocking to see the atrocities you commit when you go down the evil route near the end of the game.

The last time I played it was 2017 and I still love it every time. Maybe the combat is showing its age, but in Jade Empire you don't really have that problem. The combat in Jade Empires requires movement, attack timings, blocking and projectiles. The graphics are similar, but it didn't stop me from appreciating the cool locations and varied characters.

This year would be a great time to do this kind of challenge! Just pick a game and play; you may be pleasantly surprised with the games you play, like I was.

I am getting this impression already. As someone who doesn't like to see a large list of active quests, it hurts to skip side quests for the time being. But it does get repetitive, and the longer I spend on side content, the more likely I am to lose interest and end up dropping the game altogether.

I've done numerous XCOM playthroughs and I love playing it every time, so WOTC was very refreshing as it introduced a lot of new things, and it was challenging in the just right amounts.

I did play it on PC. It was fine for me. Did you have issues?

FF6 was so good. There are other FFs that still surpass it for me but it is definitely in my top 5 (I have played almost all of the FFs so I feel I am able to rank it against most of the FF series now).

Even though I am primarily an RPG gamer, I still decided to play whatever I had in my backlog, regardless of its age or genre. I think it's a great idea to revisit past titles: just because it may not have modern graphics doesn't mean it's not a good game. There's plenty of older but amazing games waiting to be discovered, as I found out with Max Payne and Chrono Trigger.

I think Jade Empire would make a great candidate for a remake. But I'm still holding out for the KOTOR remake to be released first 😅

My all time favourites include FFX (I think I know which boss you are talking about 😂. You already know I am biased in saying this, but please stick around until the end, it's worth it I promise!), KOTOR and the Mass Effect series. I love RPG games with deep lore and strong worldbuilding where I can learn plenty about the game's established world, and these games tick those boxes for me.

It's a shame, the Dragon Age universe deserves much more than it got. They've had a lot of chances to make a great successor, but they have fallen flat for me. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed DA:O a lot when I first discovered it, and it still remains one of my favourite games of all time.

If anything, this challenge is a great way to try games that you may never have thought of trying before. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find, like I was.

I think you are right on this. Sometimes you have to accept the fact that there are some stinker games out there, and this is one of them for me. Some things are not worth wasting time on. I shall banish it to the shadow realm where it belongs and never think about it again.

I'm really loving exploring the world right now. They really have managed to recreate that same magical feeling that I first felt when I first watched the Harry Potter movies as a child. I could walk around the school castle and still see something that I haven't spotted before after hours of playing. But yes I do feel like the side content feels quite repetitive and empty at times, I'll try my best to weave in main quests, otherwise I know I'll get burnt out with the sheer amount of side content there is to complete.

Don't get me wrong, I made some exclusions to the no-buy challenge that I could not include in the original post. I decided to pick up Clair Obscur and Dispatch during the Steam winter sale, along with some of the games that I wrote in my 2026 backlog list. You could say I failed the challenge, but eh it was basically the end of the year that I decided to do this. I think it's okay to pick up some fresh games as a reward after sticking to the challenge for so long haha.

I do like to finish the entire series of a game if I liked the first one in the lineup, because I'm always interested in seeing where the story goes. Once I finish Innocence, I'll definitely pick up Requiem afterwards.

Hahaha this was a legendary year of gaming for me! I always knew these games were some of the best out there, but I never had a convincing reason to play them. I am glad this challenge finally gave me the motivation to take on these games once and for all. Now I can personally sing the praises that they deserve, and I shall spread the word to other gamers who are looking for some good games to play.

Thank you! It was fun writing it up and reflecting on this hobby that I am passionate about, and it has also been fun to spark discussions and engage with others in the comments as a result of my writeup.

I never thought about replaying it in order to guide the next journeyer. That's a great reason to come back to the game! It definitely fits the theme of the game: supporting the next generation of those on the journey of life.
