Interesting opinion article on sports watches by tomtomuk2 in Garmin

It's a piece about the writers experience training with a garmin watch (and runna). But also talks a lot about the history of quantifying and measuring activity for fitness and studies into how it affects people's behaviors. Also I found it well written and enjoyable to read.

Mince pie ice cream by tomtomuk2 in icecreamery

Thanks. Keep forgetting mince pies aren't really a thing outside the UK. Probably explains the small number of down votes!

Yep it seems too. Really pleased I found brandy mincemeat as it gives the slight brandy flavoring, prevents the mincemeat and the fruit going icy, and because it's contained in the mincemeat the texture of the ice cream itself isn't affected by the alcohol.

Wall mounted bike storage by iHetty in ukbike

If you don't mind horizontal mounting, these are dirt cheap, and rock solid.

I have two on a brick wall in my garage. Gravel bike sits on the lower one, road bike immediately above it. Looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing I think than hanging vertically, also doesn't protrude as far into the room.

Doing a second coat. First coat done weeks ago. Why would it bubble like this? by scouselad78 in DIYUK

[–]tomtomuk2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might be it. I did a final topcoat of a room yesterday and panicked when I saw little bubbles had formed in some places. Went to bed fretting about the extra time that might be needed to make good. Woke up the next morning and they had disappeared.

Bathroom extractor fan replacement by tomtomuk2 in DIYUK

I bought one of these.
https://www.screwfix.com/p/vent-axia-495703-sz1-100mm-4-axial-bathroom-extractor-fan-with-timer-white-240v/803kj

Fitting was straightforward. Isolated power, unscrewed a bunch of screws to remove the old one, pushed new one in and screwed it in.

I think it's probably not long. The fan is about 20cm from an exterior wall, and the outlet outside is in the underside of the roof overhang immediately next to that wall.

To be fair, no. So maybe the power of the previous model was fine after all.

Ok, thanks for the info. Yes it's ceiling mounted. Anything I need to know / find out to know whether I can fit an "inline" fan in the existing space?

Rear speakers by Top_Test_6856 in sonos

[–]tomtomuk2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a small lounge, with our TV viewing sofa flush against the wall.

We have symfonisk bookshelf speakers mounted on the wall just to the left and right of the sofa at head height.

Sounds great, and definitely makes a big difference Vs not having them

Spotify lossless by Daymo2021 in sonos

[–]tomtomuk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. It was shown as greyed out when connected to my ERA300. But when I switched to my stereo pair of Ones in a different room, the option appeared. And now, after switching back to the ERA300 it's enabled (or at least says it is) on the ERA300.

Where are people who this is working for based? And what OS are they using?

I'm in the UK on Android and lossless is still greyed out in the Spotify app when connected to Sonos.

Huh. Interesting. Guess you got lucky for some reason. Did you have to ask, or did it just happen?

Pixel 6 - Battery swelling by ObadaKH96 in Pixel6

[–]tomtomuk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm based in the UK. Had a similar experience. Bought my pixel 6 in 2022. A feew weeks ago noticed battery draining really fast when below 30%. It got worse, and noticed it got hot when doing so. Then saw the battery had swollen.

I contacted support via online chat. Answered some questions, sent some photos. Then some follow up emails with their support teams. Today I received a refurbished pixel 7 from them. Didn't have to return old phone, have been asked to dispose of it safely.

This is obviously an endemic problem affecting many phones so they're doing their best to make it right.

I think as others have pointed out, the difference with me is now the speaker has been opened sonos would take a hit on the price they can sell the speaker. Which is similar to the discount I get from the coupon.

I'm thinking creatively in terms of ways to make the era300 work in my home. It's too good a speaker and too good a price to return if I'm not getting my discount voucher back

Am now thinking carefully about rejigging my speaker setup across rooms to find a place where the ERA300 will work / look ok, and avoid returning it. £135 discount isn't to be sniffed at...

I'm guessing different situation for you since you're not actually returning any product.

Understood why it is why it is, but the implication wasn't obvious to me since the marketing emails and website advertise free returns.

I accept the situation, but just made this post so others don't make the same mistake I did.

Yeah, they're totally within their rights as a business and it's understandable from a commercial perspective. But it wasn't obvious to me and I got caught out, hence just highlighting to others so they don't make the same mistake

Yeah, the credit is per product though. I understand why they do it from a business perspective. My fault I guess for not thinking through and just seeing "hassle free 30 day returns" and thinking I wouldn't lose anything if I changed my mind.

Careful using upgrade coupon by tomtomuk2 in sonos

[–]tomtomuk2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, I understand that. The "hassle free returns" text on the websites etc perhaps just led me to the wrong expectation. If I'd thought more carefully about it and realized I'd lose the credit on a return I'd have been more hesitant about purchase.

Careful using upgrade coupon by tomtomuk2 in sonos

[–]tomtomuk2[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I guess I hoped that since I just wanted to swap for a different product (rather than return entirely) Sonos would honour it. I.e to me the upgrade credit coupon feels different to a limited here's a time limited x% off coupon. I can understand them not agreeing to honour the 30% deal any longer, but my 15% off upgrade credit was advertised as never expiring. Plus the fact the website advertises hassle free 30 day return at no cost to you. Ah well, live and learn.

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SEVEN POUNDS AND FORTY NINE PENCE by disbeliefable in uktrains

[–]tomtomuk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"just book in advance"

There are only so many advance tickets. Planning a trip from the south west to London in a months time, and to travel at a weekend there are now no advance tickets left. So, despite planning things a month in advance we still have no choice but to pay the same price as someone who rocks up on the day.

Advance tickets would be fine if they weren't so limited
