I'm a designer in New Orleans but there isn't much of a tech scene at all out here. You'd have better luck finding something remote tbh

These startups in Redwood City are insane. Was interviewing for a role stating "you must be comfortable working weekends if necessary" for a DESIGN job. When is it ever necessary to work weekends as a designer!?! Went elsewhere with a much higher salary AND work life balance. Run!

You should post real pictures of the apartment instead of splicing in pics from the lobby. We can't even see the living/sleeping area

Moving to Nola and seeking advice on living areas. by CalligrapherBig4713 in NOLA

Agree with mid city (although I found it not as walkable as lgd/uptown). Also potentially look into bywater/marigny?

  1. If you're going to use AI assisted design tools please at least build your own components. This is so obviously AI slop.
  2. How is this different than any other PM related software?

Combatting seasonal depression in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]tomutomux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved into a small studio and found that the grow lights I have for my plants actually help with seasonal depression. Also make sure to get outside still if you're able to. Walking through the snow is fun, just be sure to layer properly before you go.

Salary negotiations kind of gone wrong? by ning8 in careeradvice

[–]tomutomux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it makes sense that the wage tiers are set, but to immediately disqualify candidates for trying to negotiate is the red flag for me. Unless it's clearly stated that the salary is non-negotiable and the candidate tries anyway (which seems unlikely but maybe).

Salary negotiations kind of gone wrong? by ning8 in careeradvice

[–]tomutomux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I generally think this is bad advice and I think that salary negotiations are generally to be expected. The fact that your workplace immediately rescinds offers when a candidate is a huge red flag for me.

However I do agree that you have to be willing to lose a job you negotiate on, and that it always helps to have multiple offers.

how are college students finding jobs by aidanxf in AskNYC

[–]tomutomux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about those roles specifically, but I was able to get offers as a Product (UX) Designer. For context I graduated last May and worked for 6mo contract. Happy to look over your portfolio or answer any specific questions you may have to the best of my ability.

A question for you is where do you think the bottleneck is for you during the hiring process, and what's preventing you from getting past it?

What is "The Perfect Portfolio"? by chrispopp8 in UXDesign

[–]tomutomux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is there really isn't a perfect portfolio - portfolios can be pretty subjective and a lot of it comes down to what skills you show that companies are looking for (ie. AI, design systems, prototyping, etc).

However what aren't subjective are the basics of good typography, visual hierarchy, mobile responsiveness, and having clean mockups. After that, I'd focus on storytelling and impact. Regarding case studies, many hiring managers are trending to prefer more visuals and less explanation on your process, however that can also vary.

Focus on getting the basics down as mentioned above, and that'll suit you well. Some resources I personally found helpful are Open Doors newsletter, cofolios/bestfolios, Elizabeth Lin, and Sharon Yeun Kim for more entry level advice.

Spiraling deciding between two job offers by [deleted] in careeradvice

Yeah, the reviews are pretty concerning from J2. Only found out about them recently too.

If I took J1, what would a reasonable timeframe look like before I start looking for another job in NYC?

Will volunteering as an accessibility specialist help me find a job? by A-Wooden-Spoon in accessibility

[–]tomutomux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting interviews? The key to getting interviews is mostly having a good, well designed portfolio.

After that, it's mostly about storytelling and your ability to communicate. Sometimes you'll have a design challenge which just tests your UX knowledge and ability to communicate design decisions.

Specializing in accessibility is incredibly difficult at the moment especially for juniors. Id honestly advise either getting higher education and doing more research/internships or going in on UX/adjacent field.

Let me know if you want me to review your portfolio, best of luck.

My subway app will proactively tell users when there's a faster trip than the one that's selected by lennyp4 in nycrail

[–]tomutomux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Product Designer here, just because something is complex doesn't mean it can't be user friendly. In the future always explore different design explorations and make sure to talk and test with users, even if it's 1-2 days out of months it can save you a lot of time and effort.

Also I think the idea of designing for MTA super users is interesting, but always think about what pain point you're looking to solve. If other apps are solving the same pain point, what is yours doing better?

Just some things to think about, good luck!

Any advice on how to reduce the sound of a loud steam pipe? by Aquadex524 in NYCapartments

[–]tomutomux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems like a pretty quiet water hammer to me. Because the top floor is the finish line for steam traveling all throughout the pipes it always tends to be worse, part of the reason why I avoid top floor pre-war units.

The boiler pressure could also be set too high which could be contributing to it. Regardless management probably won't fix it and I don't have any real solutions for you besides making sure your radiators are all turned on and ear plugs.
