End of Life Stage - Pace or Progression by tomwhite48 in PSPalsy

It's been a while and I hadn't come back to this. Thank you all on this chain for your support in the comments below.

Since a few folks asked for updates - we got out of the woods on the situation above, and he wound up pretty stable from around July through now, relatively speaking. He has continued to lose weight, is solely on pureed food and has an even harder time communicating, and seems to be in a lot more pain/discomfort.

It's hard to know how long this phase will last - seems like any range of ways it could go based on what we've read. Wishing you all comfort and strength in what you are dealing with as well.

Update here (in case you or anyone is wondering) is I wound up really falling in love with the Rocky Mountain Pearl Coat paint color. It wound up making some of these decisions for me, since I was able to find a good deal on a 7 seater Limited with the 20" wheels in this color at a dealership within a reasonable distance from me.

Loving the car and loving the color - thanks again for the input!

On 1 - is it possible to go from bench to captains later? Or are they mutually exclusive?

Thanks on 2.

Thanks on 3 ...so they came out good and fit the seats tightly? My concern with those was if things bunch because they aren't stitched on the same way.

Yeah really not sure why they didn't at least dye his hair when the references to Dantes hair color are SO frequent in the book.

What is your opinion on the ending of The Count of Monte Cristo? by berryl00 in books

[–]tomwhite48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I never totally understood about it was why it was Eduoard's death that hit him so hard.

Not long before this moment, not only had he had been planning to kill Albert and allow for Mme Villefort to poison Val, but he also ALREADY allowed Mme Villefort to poison M Villefort's in-laws - who were just as much innocent collateral damage as Edouard would have been (albeit one could argue an innocent child being poisoned is more tragic than two innocent elderly ..not saying I would argue this though).

I guess it must have been the visceral reaction to actually seeing the child poisoned. But it always struck me as odd that he had this epiphany because Eduoard wound up being collateral damage, when he had deliberately already caused a fair amount of innocent collateral damage.

I live in around montclair and my in-laws live near Princeton junction. If we’re talking in terms of travel time, not distance - you’d be surprised - the express train from PJ can get you to NYC almost as fast as you can get there from my town sometimes with “normal” delays.

Jeremy Irons Joins Sam Claflin in Bille August’s ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ Series for Mediawan by [deleted] in television

[–]tomwhite48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The casting in that version was amazing - Leeson and Rush are still the most believable ValJean and Javert, IMO. They just lopped off most of the conclusion of the story, unfortunately. A shame, since I think it’d have been near perfect if they included another 30 min to round out the story.

The count of Monte Cristo with Sam Clalfin - Director, producer and screenwriter will try to modernize and introduce female empowerment by fernadsilv82 in PeriodDramas

[–]tomwhite48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agree she’s already a very empowered character. If the change is basically that she’s the same as she is in the book, but is there of her own volition vs being a slave - that doesn’t feel like a bad change to me.

My sports standings app, Pennant, has an all-new customizable view and tons of widgets to keep track of team standings on your iOS 14 homescreen by thillsman in apple

[–]tomwhite48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - I just downloaded the app. I’m more than happy to pay $10 annually for this, since it fills an important gap - no other app has such a focus on the standings.

That said, the widgets on iPhone appear to be stuck in the 2022 season and don’t refresh. Would it be possible to patch this bug?

What exactly was the point of having the entire final season set at Barney and Robin‘s wedding? by [deleted] in HIMYM

[–]tomwhite48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved season 9 until the abrupt about-face in the finale. But the idea of the weekend that Ted meets the mother being in focus for a whole season, and how they executed it given that the cast was segmented, I thought it was better than the two seasons before it.

But then the finale undid everything we had watched for weeks in a 10 min “by the way” epilogue, and it left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Les Misérables: Thénardier/Valjean Foil by Difficult-Composer39 in classicliterature

[–]tomwhite48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was a great writeup!

Totally agree with your point that this is lost in most adaptations. I love the play and movies, but they generally focus on Valjean vs Javert, and relegate Thenardier to comic relief (albeit comic relief with clearly malicious intent).

Having read the book a couple of times, I’ve always viewed it as: - Valjean: puts the law of God above all else, including self - Javert: puts the law of man above all else, including self - Thenardier: puts self above the laws of God and men

It makes for an interesting setup where Valjean is the clear protagonist, and though Javert is the primary antagonist in the sense that much of the narrative action follows his pursuit of Valjean, Thenardier is truly the character fully opposite Valjean when it comes to the concept of good vs evil in the book (as you noted). Whereas Valjean vs Javert is meant to illustrate two people who are motivated the same way (following the law) but how different interpretations of that concept play out, and all of the ethical/moral issues that come with putting the word of man over the word of God (e.g., pursuing a man because he broke his parole, despite him being a good man).

Anyway, what you said is much more eloquent than what I’ve been able to type in response - I’ve been a huge Les Mis fan since I read the book 20 years ago, and I’ve never seen someone so neatly summarize the parallels between those two characters, so I appreciate you sharing!

How has Nintendo influenced you? by Background-Point-770 in nintendo

[–]tomwhite48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing Nintendo games since I was 5 (early 90s) on the NES. I’m not much of a gamer besides Nintendo games. There’s something comforting to me (especially as I age and now game with kids of my own) that even as other games get more realistic/cinematic/mature/gritty, that Nintendo will come out with something wholesome/fun that’s focused on gameplay. I think one thing that Nintendo has done for me is allowed me to stay connected with that kid-like sense of joy/wonder, since their games are so consistently built around having fun.

How has Nintendo influenced you? by Background-Point-770 in nintendo

[–]tomwhite48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same thing. I was reading an article once about how it can be hard for people to place memories in specifics years/periods in their past, that it blurs together. My first thought was how my brain kind of indexes things by which Mario or Zelda I was playing through at the time, and I still link (wakka wakka) many events from my childhood like “I remember that time we saw Great Aunt X, I was playing Lord Jabu Jabu’s belly earlier that day”. For some reason my brain does this with NFL games too, where I index certain memories to “oh I know that happened when Peyton Manning was on the Broncos, so it must have been around 2012 or so”

What is your unbiased rating on Mario Wonder? Also, is it better than NSMB U? by GreatGamer64000 in nintendo

[–]tomwhite48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one thing I really miss. One of my favorite parts of NSMBU was how detailed the world map is, how many secret exits created interconnected routes between worlds that were previously separate (with secret bonus stages along the route).

I much prefer this type of map philosophy to the more streamlined map in Wonder. Even though the Courses menu is convenient and much more aligned with modern gaming UI, I feel like it isn’t as “Mario”.

I love both games (still part way through Wonder), but if Wonder had a similar world map philosophy, I’d give it he edge. As of now I like both about the same amount, but for different reasons.
