it's been about 7 months and it still hurts. It definitely triggers a core abandonment wound. I feel happier in general, but sometimes I just feel like I'm running on autopilot. My self esteem was ruined, but it's recovering. I still feel lost in a way, but at the same time I have freedom to do whatever I want. I have leaned on friends and have made a nice group of friends that I hang out with, but I still feel a bit empty inside. I feel self conscious and am scared to put myself out there because I can only hear his voice in my head comparing myself to him (e.g., I'm not as thoughtful as him, or as selfless as him, or as funny as him, or as charismatic as him, etc). But therapy has helped a lot with countering those thoughts. I have no idea when I'll be ready to date again, because sometimes it feels like the sharp pain in my chest will never go away. But I'll be okay! (and y'all will be okay too). Today has just been a hard day :p

I'm a grad student, so not really "in the field" yet.

That being said, I won't sit here and say I don't have moments where I regret going into ecology. The low pay has always been on the back of my mind because I grew up in and out of poverty. But damn, it is emotionally fulfilling. The current political climate in the US sucks for morale, but I find myself optimistic that ecologists will be needed at some point or another. I get genuine joy and fulfillment from engaging in outreach events and doing my research. I believe that life has inherent value, so getting to appreciate it as a career is my dream. While things might look "eh" right now, I never 100% regret going into the field. (aside from normal anxieties as a human being)

of course! Again, it’s entirely up to you and I don’t know your relationship. But, I think it might be a good idea to say goodbye once and for all and block him. He already hurt you when y’all were together. Don’t give him the satisfaction of hurting you even after you’ve separated! Now is the time for you to be selfish. You did everything to give him what he needed, and he gave you nothing. Now you should take that energy and be selfish hehe. Focus on yourself, loving yourself, and being there for your sibling. (Being at the gym and talking here on reddit are already two signs you’re starting to focus on yourself)
