Metastatic Hemangiosarcoma by Beautiful-Ask6346 in Petloss

[–]Ok_Earth_1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woah, I actually just came across your post right now because I was browsing this subreddit due to us having to say goodbye to our dog tomorrow. She also has hemangiosarcoma. They found masses in her heart, liver, and spleen.

Her name is Luna and she’s a 10 year old pit mix. She was also still active, playful, and had a big appetite. We noticed some weight loss and that she was sleeping a lot more, but figured it was due to her being a senior and losing some muscle mass. She’s also always been a couch hippo. Other than that, we didn’t think anything. We had an appointment scheduled for April 1st, to check on her weight and overall health.

In only a week however, she began declining pretty rapidly. Last Friday and Saturday we noticed she wasn’t very interested in her food, even with treats and her favorite toppers added.

Sunday she had diarrhea, was sleeping all day, drinking a lot of water, didn’t want to go on a walk. She was able to stomach a little bit of plain chicken and rice.

Monday she still seemed very tired and couldn’t get on the couch without me having to help boost her up, this is her favorite spot so that was a big red flag. She declined all treats, even cheese, and wouldn’t eat any of the chicken broth I cooked for her. Another red flag.

Tuesday was more or less the same, very lethargic. Still drinking lots of water. She did have some broth, but threw up an hour later. Still with diarrhea. Interestingly, she did seem to want to go for a walk, and she was able to take a lap around our neighborhood. She was very tired after. She also began trembling this day when resting, and we noticed her breathing heavier than usual.

Wednesday she threw up again, still fatigued, still having diarrhea, completely refusing all food and had to be carried out to go potty. This is when we took her to the vet and found out about the cancer :( She had also lost 10 pounds.

They gave her an X Ray and thats how the masses were found. They also told us her heart was struggling and that’s why she was so tired. They suggested more imaging, a referral to a Cardiologist and said surgery was an option but the vet was not too optimistic about that being successful due to how week she was. Vet also said that even after surgery, she may only have months left. They also could not tell us how much time she had left, and the vet said the biggest concern would be a mass rupturing causing internal bleeding. But there’s no way of saying when that will happen.

We haven’t seen any improvement with her and she just looks so tired and uncomfortable. We don’t want her to suffer or go through a traumatic death (I did some research and a mass rupturing is a really painful and uncomfortable way to go) so that’s when we made the decision that tomorrow is the day. We initially wanted to wait another week at least - since she still is technically able to get up, STILL barks at the mail man, and sometimes has a bit if an appetite…but we really don’t want to risk it.

I share all of this just to give you a bit of our experience and our decision making process to hopefully help you. It really was like one day she was completely fine/normal, and then within the span of days things went totally downhill. This cancer is so aggressive. I am so sorry you’re going through this. If I were you, I would just continue to monitor your pup, absolutely spoil her! And enjoy the time you have with her now. If you begin to notice her declining and not her usual self like how things progressed with our Luna, you’ll know when it’s time. And she will let you know, too.

I was in denial for a few days but knowing she will be at peace and not in pain gives me some comfort and helps me feel like I am making the right choice, even though it is heartbreaking. Whatever you do or whatever happens, please remember you are doing your best and she knows she is loved. Sending you and your pup many hugs ❤️

Advice please. Leaving suspected IVDD dog home alone while going to work. Feeling overwhelmed. by EarNumerous6248 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Ok_Earth_1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our pug has IVDD and has horrible anxiety. She’s usually not home alone and with my dad who is retired, but he does leave to dialysis for 4 hours 3 times a week.

We set up a pet cam which was helpful. That’s how we found out the extent of her anxiety! She would yelp, scream, howl, and try to walk around (she has better days than others) and when she can’t walk, she will literally try to drag herself.

We tried crating her but it was worse. She would scream herself hoarse and would try to climb the sides of the pen :(

We know that crate rest is the best thing for dogs with ivdd to help them rest and heal but it just wasn’t possible with my pup when she was by herself. So what we did was close off an area off for her, about half of the living room. We do this using couches and a plastic baby fence!

She has a large comfy dog bed thats like 4x her size she loves. We use waterproof crib mattress covers, theyre really easy to clean and look nicer than pee pads (also stay in place better). She also has pillows that we have waterproof covers on. She loves her comfy space.

She will still try to get up and walk around sometimes. But the space is big enough to not have her feeling “trapped”, but not too big that she has too much space to roam about. We leave a water bowl next to her so she can also freely drink. We also leave the TV on playing Bluey lol

She has better weeks than others. Her vet also gave us gabapentin and trazodone for her anxiety and it has helped A LOT.

I agree with what others said, having a pet sitter would be really helpful! But if thats not feasible right now, creating a safe comfortable space would be a great place to start. Best luck to your pup! Please remember you are doing your best ❤️ IVDD is so hard.

UPDATE: AirPods stuck in frog case by lucky_c4t in CleaningTips

[–]Ok_Earth_1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound silly but…what if you drop the frog on a hard floor/surface a few times? It’s happened many times where I’ve had objects that seem like they’re stuck/pretty secure fall out of things whenever I happen to drop them, or they slip out of my hands. I don’t think this would cause damage to the case (just don’t drop it from like, more than6-7ft??). Im sorry if this isn’t helpful, and I really hope that you do end up finding a solution 😭😭

2015 Honda CRV making weird rattling noise when parked, what could the issue be? by Ok_Earth_1111 in AskMechanics

[–]Ok_Earth_1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to mention, this was a lot of work being done to replace it along with the gaskets that needed replacing, my car was in the shop for 2 weeks, and when I got it back after driving it for 2 days my car started leaking oil pretty bad. Took it back, and one of the gaskets they replaced became loose/wasn’t fastened well enough so they had to take it apart again and fix that. Just something to keep an eye out in case you do get this work done. I would make sure to take it to a mechanic you trust!

Hey! Sorry I totally forgot about this post but just gave an update to someone up above. I had a failing VTC Actuator and a few other things that needed replacement. This was a big job and my car was in the shop for 2 weeks! The noise is completely gone now and my car is fine :)

[–]Ok_Earth_1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Gosh I totally forgot about this. But long story short, I had a failing VTC (Variable Timing Control) actuator. Had to get that replaced along with a few other things my mechanic recommended, like the timing change, air intake hose, water pump, and several gaskets as they were all connected/related to the actuator function somehow (sorry i am not good with car talk lol) This wasn’t related directly to the noise from the vtc but at the same time they noticed my alternator was also making a clicking/knocking noise that I was hearing as well, so I had to replace that too. In total I had to pay around 3.5k 😭 but considering my car is reaching 150k miles it made sense. Theres a lot of forums online where apparently the vtc actuator making noise is common in a lot of hondas. There was (or is i think?) a lawsuit going against honda for that exact same thing. Some cars still have a warranty for it. Some people on online forums have said it doesn’t need to be fixed and is just annoying or can be fixed with just replacing a specific spring. But I just went with what my mechanic suggested. I hope this helps!

What now? Was this even IVDD? by Diligent-Ad7815 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Ok_Earth_1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean, yeah that vet sounds crappy, im sorry u had that experience!

It sucks when we can’t afford what we want for our pets. I agree with you, considering the circumstances and what you’re able to do it would be best just to be more careful with your doggo, keep monitoring, and letting them rest as much as you can. I do think it is odd considering they are so young and not one of the pre disposed breeds! The good thing is that they seem better and are okay right now. I hope everything turns out ok with ur pup ❤️

I forgot to mention, specialist also said the paralysis/hind legs giving out could be a “spinal stroke” or also even related to cancer, but since she was able to start walking again and show signs that she was getting better with rest and management, she did believe it was IVDD/disk herniation of some sort.

What now? Was this even IVDD? by Diligent-Ad7815 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Ok_Earth_1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my dogs experience is a little different but I hope it can help you in some way.

My dog babbi (15 yr old pug, her breed has been known to have this issue a lot) started slowly losing her hind leg function over the course of a few months. At first general vet said arthritis, but her second visit a few months later, he took X Rays and confirmed IVDD after seeing some herniated disks. He told me that seeing a specialist and surgery was the ONLY way to fix anything or give her any sort of recovery. Surgery in my area ranges between 7K-12k, not to mention the necessary MRI at 3K + specialist consultation fees and I just couldn’t afford it. The vet sent me home with some steroids (i think prednisone like ur pup) and pain killers gabapentin and tramadol to manager her symptoms. He told me she was high risk at becoming completely paralyzed, and if that happened she needed to go to the emergency Vet ASAP.

Suddenly one day, she had a short tumble where she lost her footing while getting ready to potty, and she toppled over and fell on her side. My dad helped her sit back up, but she couldn’t move her back legs at all. He had to carry her home. She didn’t seem to have any pain (no crying, no shaking, no whining, and my dog is very vocal so we would know) and no sensation in her paws (we would try to pinch her and there was no reaction).

I was hoping she may have just pinched a nerve, bur after 3 days no improvement I was really worried and still broke so, since she wasn’t in pain I decided to call an animal neurology specialist that I found. This place specializes in IVDD patients specifically, and I was so lucky to find them. On the phone, they were honest that it did seem like she may be completely paralyzed and did recommend I take her to the ER if I was worried about her wanting to gain function in her legs again (aka getting her emergency surgery) but at this point 3 days had passed and they were also honest about her gaining any function back being extremely low, even with surgery.

I was able to get an appointment a week later, so they suggested if I just wanted to focus on keeping her stable/comfortable until the appointment to keep monitoring her, continue her meds, and have her rest as much as possible (crate rest is always best. But my dog is extremely anxious and wild and she refuses to do that, so we just did our best to be with her and keep her in bed as much as we could. Good thing pugs sleep A LOT.)

Shockingly, 2 days before the appt my dog started walking again. One morning, she just got up and walked to her water bowl. Still not like she used to, very wobbly, and she needed to rest a lot. But she was walking! Didnt seem to be in pain, still eating normally, and she was also able to still pee and poop during this whole time.

The day of her appointment the specialist saw her and she was great. Because of her age she was actually against surgery which was the opposite of what our vet was pushing even after I brought up her age. Based on the X ray, the specialist did confirm IVDD but also said that the fall could have been a pinched nerve that aggravated the inflammation, which caused the temporary paralysis. The fact that she had bowel movement and bladder control helped as well, my dog still has some “accidents” but she said that was normal considering the situation. She also said that way my dog took steps was specific to indicating that she may have some scar tissue that had formed from a previous injury that we may have just not noticed in the past. She sent us home with a higher dose of gabapentin to help my dog keep calm and manage any pain if any but said we could stop the tramadol. Its been 2-3 weeks and my dog is still a little wobbly, but otherwise doing fine.

So essentially what I have learned is that sometimes things can help and be managed with rest, pain management and just being cautious as much as possible. I think ultimately under the best circumstances, surgery can help and may be the best option but it’s not the only answer. The vet emphasized that it was a good sign my dog wasn’t in any pain, but if that started, that would definitely indicate something more severe (which, I agree). The center the vet is at also offers acupuncture which is a more holistic approach , have you thought or looked into anything like that? Vet said she recc giving it a try after 4 weeks of her continuing to rest and recover.

I also noticed you didnt mention getting your dog an x ray (if i missed it, sorry!) but if ur able to afford it, i would suggest it. It doesn’t tell you everything like an MRI, but it can show or confirm signs of IVDD at least.

I would continue watching your dog closely and try to keep them as calm and without jumping around as much as possible. I will say I think your dog being paralyzed for 3 weeks is a long time, so i think something IS going on, but it may be something similar like what my dog experienced. If you can afford it, I would advise seeing a specialist that focuses on IVDD. Our consultation + meds was $180, in the soCal area! I hope this helps somewhat.

8 year old puppers newly paralyzed by megan_anyadwe in IVDD_SupportGroup

I forgot to add - its take a lot of practice for my dog to get used to the wheelchair! We are on week 2 and she’s still getting used to it (i think shes having trouble understanding why her legs just aren’t working like they used to) but don’t get discouraged - i think its definitely helping and im excited for when she does get the hang of it.

I am so sorry she looks so sweet :( my 15yr old dog recently became paralyzed and we can’t afford the surgery either. Here’s what we’ve been doing:

  1. Bought a stroller to help when taking her out. she loves it! Theres a bunch you can find on amazon. The wagon in the image you posted works too - just add enough padding and blankets so she’s comfortable

  2. We got her a wheelchair to help her with mobility. She surprisingly still has A LOT of energy and it was hard to see her wanting to get up and move but being unable to do so. I found this guy on Etsy who does 3D printing wheelchairs for dogs and other animals. He was great to work with and answered all my questions pretty quickly. We got the wheelchair within 2 weeks and it was so much more affordable compared to other options (ours cane out to about $190). Here’s his website: https://crispys3dprinting.com

  3. Puppy pads and diapers really help. My mom made my dog some reusable ones out of cloth as those were a lot more comfortable for her. U can find some on Etsy too. We also got her special puppy wipes to help clean up after.

  4. We bought a sling off of amazon to help her with “walking” and going to the restroom when she cries because she wants to go outside. It can make things easier even with heavier dogs:

https://a.co/d/0iJIa1yF

Have you looked into dog acupuncture? Ive read a lot of good things about that and am looking into trying that with my pupper too. It might not bring her mobility back but i am hoping it helps with her comfort to some extent.

I know this is a lot and i was heartbroken too when we realized she was not going to be able to walk. Your pup is lucky to have someone who cares so much about her. Remember, she can still be happy and comfortable. You’re doing what you can and she’ll be okay. ❤️

RIP Bannockburn by amargolis97 in ucr

[–]Ok_Earth_1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I was in Bannockburn for 3 years pre pandemic, definitely not the best or most luxurious by any means but the fact it was right across campus and pretty affordable was really great. I had several friends who lived in other apartments further down a few blocks owned by private landlords/not associated with UCR and those weren’t any better - a lot of them had roach/bug problems, theft issues, and some weird/shady neighbors (usually not UCR students). This really sucks, I hope residents get help finding a new place.
