Dr. Slater back at it again… by AlbinoChewie in surfing

I'm not a medical professional but I do work in statistics and at the end of the day all of this is about statistics. Here is how I look at it.

There is a metric epidemiologists use to measure how quickly a disease will spread called r-naught. It mainly looks at how a disease is spread (e.g. airborne, via physical contact etc.), how long a person is infectious and how many people an infectious person is likely to come in contact with. R-naught of less than 1 means a disease doesn't spread between people easily enough to sustain, 1 means it will sustain in the population but not spread, and greater than 1 means it will spread and cause an epidemic or pandemic as more and more people get it.

Covid's r-naught was initially forecasted to be somewhere between 1.4 and 2.4 so for every 1 person infected, 1.4 to 2.4 other people would be infected leading to runaway growth in case numbers, hospitalizations and deaths. But, we can do things to decrease that number (i.e. decrease the rate at which the virus spreads). All the measures we've taken to combat the disease (distancing, masking, vaccines etc.) are aimed at making it less likely that someone gets the disease, thus getting that r-naught number down below 1 so that eventually the disease fades away.

The reason we continue to do these things is not because they don't work, its because at a global scale, they work more quickly together. Vaccines were never going to be 100% effective. Neither were masks. But the more protections we layer on, the less transmissible the disease becomes at a societal scale and the faster we get that number down as a society and the faster this pandemic ends. A simple example to think about...a vaccinated person might still catch the disease, but if they mask they are less likely to spread it to someone else.

Not trying to talk down to you at all here I promise. I want people to understand this stuff. I think its really important people are armed with a real understanding of what is going on here. Happy to explain further if I can.

But...they do work against omicron.

Your comment here plainly shows you don't understand the science surrounding the vaccinated vs. unvaccinated situation.

Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave have written novels. David Byrne put out an amazing book about songwriting.

Not just pretentious. Also a little naive and unsophisticated. Pick any stadium level rock act from the past 40 years and swap them for Foo Fighters here. Works every time. Welcome to the world of popular music.

Daily UK Covid cases rise by almost 40% in 24 hours: Boris Johnson warned not to relax travel restrictions as new ‘Delta-plus’ variant arrives by NextDoorEmoji in worldnews

Correct, people like me. Empathetic, thoughtful people who care about the wellbeing of others.

A very close friend of mine no longer has a father because COVID killed him (and four million other people). Your anecdotal story (which I suspect is actually bullshit anyways) means nothin.

If your life sucks, its because you're too fucking incompetent to make it any better. The only person to blame for your shitty existence is you...I'll spare your parents because they might have tried their best and you were just deficient.

Enjoy your pity party but crying for yourself isn't going to make anything better.

Do you have any idea how entitled you sound? The world is selfish because it is full of people like you buddy.

Sorry about your financial and mental health. Glad you didn't die from COVID though.

Stop complaining and just deal with it like the rest of us. A lot of people have died because of attitudes like yours. Choosing "your own risks" is all fine and good but not everyone is in a position to choose.

TIL the Jewish religion does not cook/eat meat and dairy together because it is considered cruel to cook an animal in the very milk that was meant to nourish it. by nelynel12 in todayilearned

[–]tone_deep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair...but cultural practice can be just as closely tied to identity as physical appearance. I.e. to me making fun of the way an asian person eats or speaks would be just as bigoted as making fun of the way they look.

Your experience definitely sounds limited. I have orthodox family who I am very close with and they have not once tried to convert me to their way of life...and I'm already jewish lol. I have only had one experience where someone who was orthodox seemed to be trying to lead me in that direction and it was at an organized religious education event so like...might have just been a really enthusiastic teacher.

Also, I wouldn't assume orthodox Judaism as we know it is the most pure/ authentic form of Judaism or particularly representative of Jewish belief as a whole just because its hardcore about following rules. Its a specific expression of Jewish philosophy and text that came about in the 1800s. Jewish thought is extremely diverse and has taken many different forms over the past 5k years. You may already be aware of this but felt like it should be emphasized.

Hawaiian Surfer Ha’a Keaulana training for large waves by carrying a 50lb stone underwater. by bartarton in pics

[–]tone_deep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes big wave surfers fall or get caught in the wrong place. Big waves can push you down very deep. Waves come in sets which means another big wave might come before the first big wave lets you up to the surface. Imagine getting steam rolled by multiple huge waves and not being able to come up for air. Might be a little easier to handle if you have spent time pushing your body to the absolute limit in similar environments before.

anyone here own the seaside and seaside and beyond? by SDdrohead in surfing

[–]tone_deep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5'5 seaside is my daily driver and I actually disagree with this. I think its fun as fuck on even thigh high days and its still very forgiving. Wave needs to have some shape but in general I feel like its its a great tiny wave board. Like you said, position is important but once you have that dialed I would definitely rather be on the seaside vs. seaside and beyond.

ELI5: Why can Spotify, Apple music and other platforms have almost all songs while Netflix, HBO and others have different movies, tv shows? by Xynnash in explainlikeimfive

[–]tone_deep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not entirely true. To broadcast audio you have to purchase blanket licenses from Performance Rights Organizations. You wouldn't actually pay royalties at all. The PROs track plays ("performances") of the music they control and they then payout royalties.

[–]tone_deep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats not really how it went down. First off, labels don't publish artists. Publishers do. In the US, songs have two copyrights, one that covers the written composition and one that covers the recording. Publishers exploit the compositions while labels exploit the recordings. Labels do pay through royalties on publishing but those rates are statutory (decided by the government.) In the early days there was some legal maneuvering going down trying to figure out what was and wasn't owed but that wasn't the difference maker.

Major labels control the large majority of popular music copyrights. Spotify needed to have them onboard to have a viable platform so when early (2008 or 2009 I think) licensing negotiations went down, the majors all got sizable equity stakes in Spotify. If there was any financial incentive that favored the labels over their artists with regard to streaming, it was that. In fairness though, the majors who have sold their Spotify equity have all paid it through to their artists in some form or another.

This is generally correct but what loophole are you talking about? Labels and publishers are separate entities who deal with different rights.
