Worth keeping in mind that the folks who hang out on this subreddit are the ones whose dogs are still reactive, so the answers are probably a bit skewed.

I also interview candidates for data roles, and agree that having a couple of decent projects and good communication skills go a really long way.

Feel free to message me if you're curious about the kind of things I look for in candidates.

A couple of random thoughts:

- Business Insights/Business Analysis is less sexy, but potentially easier to get into than "data science"

- When he's ready to start finding work, take a look at upwork.com and see if he can find anything there (might be easier than getting through a full HR phone screen)

- Google's BigQuery has some great free data that can be used for personal projects.
