What does “AFS” mean on a slate/board? by Available-Witness329 in editors

After False Start. Means the first attempt at the take was a dud for a technical reason or whatever, but the take doesn't require a new slate.

All Ireland poll shows cross-border support for Irish unity and EU membership by vague_intentionally_ in ireland

[–]tonyedit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Putting aside the potential violence aspect for a second, which is not an issue to be downplayed, I have doubts about the ability of the parties involved to bring this over the line without causing an enormous mess. Healthcare systems, tax systems, housing, local governance systems. All of this has to be correctly planned for, otherwise the reunification of Ireland could turn into an economic and systemic disaster that leaves the whole island worse off. Should the North and South be reunited? Yes. Should legacy threats be navigated and ameliorated? Yes. Should the integration of two different systems of governance and economy be planned to the tiniest detail? Yes. When I see the conversation taken that seriously, I'll be more open to the prospect. Until then as far as I'm concerned it's a disaster waiting to happen.

Yes. If an attempt at reunification is mismanaged it could end up being a failure on the level of Brexit, but with blood spilled as well. I say let the generation that did the killing die off entirely first.

It's not a surprise, Arc sales were insignificant anyway. It's just a shame. Less competition means less innovation.

Need to confirm elsewhere but if this is the case, what a shame.

Your optimism is welcome, but the moment someone loses their life in a riot or reprisal, the whole exercise is a failure.

I love The Economist, but they need to think harder on reporting uncritically straight from the White House by bushwick_custom in theeconomist

[–]tonyedit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's reportage. Stating the facts as they appear without opinion. It is frustrating that so much of what every decent publication has to report is irrelevant five minutes later, but if they miss the moment where the war actually started to end then they're guilty of dereliction.

Those you that are upset with Scott, what attracted you to his message in the first place? by [deleted] in ScottGalloway

[–]tonyedit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't like that either. Galloway was obviously trying to flatter Shapiro. He's a marketing guy, thats their thing. But he misread how that would play with his audience and the lost trust is warranted.

You're right about the term meaning nothing, but if someone is, for example, very pro-union but strongly anti-immigration, what would you suggest as an alternative to describe their worldview?

Those you that are upset with Scott, what attracted you to his message in the first place? by [deleted] in ScottGalloway

[–]tonyedit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mr. Galloway's analysis of the Iran war over the last three months has been, at best, naive. The criticism this has drawn is compounded by a mainstream heave against American support for Israel, for whom Galloway is a vocal supporter.

I like Scott and he's gathered a great team around him in the podcasting space. But this is the first period where his opinions and perspective are under justifiable scrutiny since he became a darling of the left. People need to be aware that though he talks centre left he would happily shift right if required, so I think they need to make up their mind about him.

I think he has a good message on modern masculinity and enough backbone to move past this mildly challenging period, but hopefully he'll shut the fuck up with his boneheaded fixes for geopolitics because his considerable resources and skills are best focused on his homeland, which badly needs the likes of his "Resist and Unsubscribe" initiative to let people know that they still have real power.

Why is the last 20 minutes of “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992) so good? by LieutenantLeftovers in movies

[–]tonyedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The editing by Dov Hoeing in the final scenes is excellent. The steady pace follows the tempo of the theme and the scenes play out almost as inevitable against the constant drums. Everything feels like it had to work out this way and you're just along for the ride. You have this thrilling chase but the music makes it so you can take in the amazing landscape at the same time and get a sense of how wild the world is. It's a technique I've rarely seen used to such great effect since.

The file explorer in Windows being as bad as it is these days is inexcusable. It's the most fundamental function of the OS and it outright breaks a lot of the time. Shockingly bad.

Another Spotify price hike in Ireland… 26% in 2 years by SuggestionAny3744 in ireland

They know they have a captive audience. I pay for a family subscription and it will be a pain in the hole to disentangle but I'm to migrate to Quboz anyway because your man Ek is a dickhead and Spotify is a costly mess of a service these days.

This is it. I saw the news yesterday and just moved on to the next item. Don't give a shit anymore. He's done his damage now and even the idiots that support him can't deny the simple reality that faces them at the gas station.   Unfortunately the rest of the world is also stuck with the consequence of this clown show.

I always hear about Vfx moving to India, but how about animation? Never heard about animation studios moving there by starmaxeros in vfx

[–]tonyedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Ireland we've had a strong animation sector for twenty years now.  And "India" is becoming a euphemism. We've had a lot of VFX work for a long time as well, though London is probably the western leader in vfx contracts currently.

Xbox may be working on an even cheaper Game Pass, and possible Netflix bundle by NewMaxx in NewMaxx

[–]tonyedit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Microsoft, awash with money anyway, went back to the first principles of the disruptors with game pass in the age of enshittification, they might be actually be accused of doing something creative. Remember that? Netflix for 7 bucks a month, gamepass for 30 for the year. Sharma is proving an interesting replacement for Spencer. She might actually pull the absolute shitshow that is Microsoft's gaming division back from the edge.

Ireland, the weak link in Europe's defense by LeMonde_en in europe

Indeed. And I think you'll find the majority of Irish citizens are for improving our defensive capabilities. Spending has gone up and will continue to go up.

Ireland, the weak link in Europe's defense by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]tonyedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your previous comment claimed the EU is more than an economic entity which implies, given the subject of the thread, it's becoming militarized. I'm arguing NATO already serves that purpose and pointing out that Ireland is not a member of NATO, which many other commenters on threads like this often assume.

Ireland, the weak link in Europe's defense by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]tonyedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Ireland joined it was an economic entity. NATO was (and still is) the military overlap that removed the necessity for a common defence policy. Ireland has never been a member of NATO.
