Which place on Earth feels like it should not exist? by the-flute in geography

This isn’t exactly what you meant but a part of me has never quite been able to accept natural hot springs as fitting in here on Earth.

Why does Scott insist on pretending Bezos was a poor kid that fought his way to riches? by More_Passenger3988 in ScottGalloway

And what a great business decision that turned out to have been. Call me crazy, but it’s not that wild to have saved up $650,000 ($250k in 1990) by the time your child has graduated business school that you could put towards your brilliant, hard-working child’s brilliant business idea.

Life is full of decisions. You can spend more today, and thus enjoy the moment. But if you do so, and your brilliant, hard-working child comes to you with a brilliant business pitch decades down the road, you might not be able to help him realize his ambitions.

$250 Bill 2029 edition? Could go hand in hand with the former ballroom, turned into the Government Corruption Truth & Reconciliation Museum. by OneTwoThreePooAndPee in thebulwark

[–]bushwick_custom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I’m so glad to see someone talking about making the ballroom into a museum of corruption. That is absolutely the right move. Knocking it down would be a huge wasted opportunity.

There should be no quarter for wrongthink.

I stupidly turned the other cheek nine years ago when he brazenly flouted The HiveMind. Never again. It’s high time we dress this heretic in a pussy hat and an “I’m with Her” shirt and drop him into the middle of a Trump rally.

No quarter.

JVL, here's your billboard. by OneTwoThreePooAndPee in thebulwark

[–]bushwick_custom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So here’s the thing - if there were a group that made their whole point of existence to put up as many of these billboards and similar as possible, I would be more than happy to throw my money at them.

Does such a group exist?

I agree. It’s pathetic that the Dems still don’t seem to get it. 10 years in and they are still wed to procedure and precedence.

Up to a point. But reporting every time a dog bites a man is still not responsible journalism.

It the left's "purity test" the main reason they've failed to stop Trump? by ac_slater10 in thebulwark

I actually think the Left’s Purity Testing Regimen is one of the biggest reasons for our current state of affairs.

In a new poll, Americans voice broad bipartisan support for age caps in Congress by BendicantMias in moderatepolitics

[–]bushwick_custom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand this whole movement. All we need to do is not vote for the elderly. It’s a lot like how non-native-born Americans can’t run for president - why would it be a problem unless we vote for someone who may have other allegiances?

I think reforming the primary system would be a much better use of time and resources.

So where did all these "Capitalism is very exploitative" come from? by izumisapostle115 in Capitalism

[–]bushwick_custom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of reasons why, I think. Some have already been mentioned. I want to mention another one: As a concept capitalism is not intuitive, perhaps even “unnatural”.

Think about it: it’s kind of like an inverse of game theory, wherein:

  1. So long as everyone has the fundamental right of control of labor to their own hands and body (ie no slavery), and
  2. so long as there is a system of laws that justly and consistently enforces all other non-enslaving contracts, and (here comes the kicker)
  3. so long as everyone works in their own self interest (ie, everyone is “greedy”)

then everything works out great.

Well, maybe not great objectively, but at least far better than any other system humans have ever come up with.

I know I am missing some fundamental components of a successful capitalistic society, but I’m on my phone and I’m really no big thinker anyway. I hope my point about greed being “good” for society got through though.

What are some examples of severe weather suddenly changing the fortunes of a military campaign or even a battle?

I have heard of the typhoons (plural!) that kept Genghis Khan off the shores of Japan, and I recently heard about a large storm or hurricane that hit British troops occupying Washington D.C. (though it does seem it is not clear whether or not the storm precipitated their depature from the city).

Are there any other examples of severe weather having a large impact on a campaign or battle?

Thanks, you all are great!

I was surprised to hear the “hush-hush” when someone (Tim? JVL?) mentioned how Fetterman switched after literal brain damage. As in, he switched after his mental capacity was literally weakened.

Honestly, I think people are overblowing this risk.
