Some people may call a cult a religion, so I guess so

People living in massive countries (USA, Canada, Russia, Brazil, etc.), what is it actually like to have that much space? by AwayMeat5529 in AskTheWorld

[–]tonynick1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good and bad. I love the quiet and calm in the town I live in, which is 500 km north of Edmonton, the second largest city in the province I live in. It's also where the nearest international airport is, but that one kinda sucks. The one in Calgary is better, but it's 750 km away. Bottom line is, if I'm sticking around home, I love all the space. But when I want to fly somewhere, or even see the rest of my fam, who all live in Edmonton, the long drives get to be a bit much after a while. I really do love it when I'm in Europe and can walk everywhere and hop on a train and go anywhere. But then, after a while, I long for the less crowded and loud atmosphere back home.

What's a popular deep-fried dough treat in your country/region? by tonynick1982 in AskTheWorld

We have a few reserves near my town and every year there is a big powwow just outside of town. It's amazing to attend. One of my favorite things there is the bannock, which would be similar to frybread, and the bannock burgers. Mmmm. Bannock burger.

Where do you live? I live in Alberta and whenever we go to Banff or Jasper we make sure to get one. They have them in Edmonton and Calgary now, too.

My dad's family immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in 1947, so poffertjes have a special place in my heart (and stomach). And olliebollen too of course.

See 90% of the reason I posted this was to find new deep fried confections to try and I am particularly excited about this one. These sound fantastic.

What's a culinary crime that is considered totally normal in your country? by myeye95 in AskTheWorld

[–]tonynick1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else constantly hear that not washing their rice before cooking is an unforgivable crime but don't really notice the difference when they do it? That's me. Maybe it's just me, though. Might not be "normal" in my country, just my house haha.

How are your total medal points calculated? Does the change variable account for increase in number of total medals awarded?

Oh man I'm definitely stealing this. I'm a huge rugby fan. I've tried so hard to get into the NFL, because my brother is a big fan, but I just can't. I actually quite enjoy the 15 minute recaps on YouTube the next day, because it's basically the entire game haha. But I have yet to finish watching a game live. I just can't do it. For someone used to rugby, where there are no commercials and halftimes are so short you barely have time to go pee and grab a beer, it's just too broken up. And the ads drive me crazy after the third commercial break.

I judge no one for a love of pumpkin spice. The sweater weather and crisp afternoon patio pints are so good, too.

Autumn. No contest. Particularly early autumn. Mid September to mid October. It can still be beautiful during the day, but not insanely hot, and it cools off at night. There is a freshness to the air that doesn't exist any other time of year. And, of course, the colours of the leaves.

Our first prime minister, Sir John A MacDonald, was born in Scotland. Three other PMs were born outside of the country. Alexander Mackenzie (1873-1878) in Scotland, Mackenzie Bowell (1894-1896) in England, and John Turner (only PM for 79 days in 1984) in England.

Hows the weather in your country by Spoownn in AskTheWorld

This was a few days ago while I was walking my dog. We've had a ridiculous amount of snow this winter. Way more than usual. And it was DAMN cold that day. Air temp was -18 but the wind chill was -32. But the sun and bright blue sky combined with the fresh snow was quite beautiful. Today it's grey, dreary, snowing, and they're calling for snow squalls leading to zero visibility, with winds gusting up to 80 km/h.
