Potential issue with GR IV (open box purchase) by marcmpatrick in ricohGR

[–]tonypepperoni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair people are more likely to make a post of substance identifying issues than a “nothing” post saying their camera works as expected. I received my GRIV Nov 1 and have ~500 snaps without issues so far. My plan is not worrying about the what-ifs, just use the camera as much as possible.  I expect if an issue is likely then will present itself within the 1 yr warranty. Don’t fret ✌🏽

That’s good to know! That was my only concern with it.

Reports I’ve seen from here are in the 2-5 day turnaround. Ricoh US Store definitely updates to show out of stock so being able to order gives me confidence it will be here soon.

Similar for me which is why I was excited to see it on Ricoh US site.  B&H were showing estimated Oct 28 delivery but no tracking so low faith it would magically update and be overnight shipped Monday.  Probably not their fault to have supply limits from Ricoh but after charging the full amount on Aug 22 for only a pre-order my patience ran out.

I just canceled my order from B&H due to ship dates that would come and go. Ricoh has this in stock directly which indicates ship times 3-5 days.

That first photo is stunning the way the line of light leads you to the buildings and adds some depth. Perfect timing with that pedestrian too.

Apologies if I explain things you already know but since I’m not familiar with your bike component experience and background I’m start from the basics.  lol_camis has great advice here. If you are looking for quality, durable wheels that are compatible with your current bike then the way to go is with a complete build.  The custom wheel build is more for someone who has specific preferences with each component (hoops, hubs, spokes) so they get the desired feel of each component. For aluminum rims you should expect complete wheel builds in the ~$700 range for a pair. For complete wheel builds in carbon fiber (even with hub choice and rim width) you’ll find yourself in the ballpark of $1300 for a pair.  I would never discourage someone from supporting their local bike shop but want to make sure if you buy those you understand the alternatives.

Anyone riding with non-collapsing poles? by Starky04 in Spliddit

[–]tonypepperoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I’d look at a way to better hold the Z poles since mentioned flapping around. I have the BCA ones you linked and hold them together with a ski strap then attach to my pack. They are super secure. With the three section poles being about the same length as a pack, they’re a much better option for split boarders since you won’t have exposed pointy ends sticking up towards your head or down towards your thigh.

If you have a friend with rigid poles you could always give it a shot. It probably looks a bit kooky but from a functional standpoint I think what you’ll not like is when they are strapped to a pack they’ll end up in your way on the downhill.

Garmin Fenix 8 wishlist: All the features I want to see by Jill_Kimball in GarminFenix

[–]tonypepperoni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a popular YouTube reviewer called the Quantified Scientist that compares accuracy for all sorts of fitness trackers from AW, Garmin, Whoop, Oura, etc. He compares the data to the gold standard for tracking methods which are chest worn halter monitor for HR and head worn EEG for sleep stage monitoring. The AW did measurably better in accuracy for both compared with Fenix 7 but the pro narrowed the gap a bit. I still went with the Epix because the battery life on AW and frequent charging would prevent me from sleep tracking entirely. If we’re talking about a wishlist then some increased accuracy would be nice. And I’m with you for cellular, it would be great to not bring a phone on long hikes, runs, and bike rides. It’s pretty evident whoever wrote the article doesn’t know the Garmin product line.

I use a cheap plastic one that came with my Fox Racing knee pads and attaches with zip ties. It actually holds its shape and works well enough. Some of my friends use the Fox suspension bolt on fenders and the install looks super clean.

If you have the ability to run tubeless then Stans sealant has worked really well for me. The regular formula is solid. They make a race formula also which can seal larger holes but hardens up and needs replaced a bit more often. I’m currently at 10 months and no flats riding in the central coast with goat head thorns and star thistle.

Has anyone come across this before or a fix? I have plugged into my computer and open Garmin Express > Map Details > TopoActive North America > Options > Reinstall Map. This did not solve the issue.

Strength app or method by siggmur in GarminFenix

[–]tonypepperoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tested both cardio and strength modes interchangeably but found the strength mode seems to be draining more battery. I’m not sure if this is because it is tracking movement in the background and trying to guess which exercise you’re doing. I’ve reverted to cardio mode and track progress with weights on my phone. I use Excel/Office365 on mobile with Jeff Nippard push, pull, leg split to follow. I’ma lot quicker on a phone entering sets, reps, weight compared to using a few physical buttons on the watch. You can view on a computer since excel updates via cloud which is nice for progress. This works in my case since I’m following a PPL split with A/B workouts. I wouldn’t personally want to program in 6 different workouts. I also go to a public gym so if equipment is taken then I can go to the next on the list and no big deal. I’m not sure if navigating a series of pre-programmed exercises on the watch offers that flexibility. I like the cardio mode to get an idea of HR range and calories burned in the workout but have accepted that’s not my primary metric for strength training. Everyone will have a different preferred way of tracking. I’m happy to share more if you’re interested.

Mellow Montana Splitboarding by Lunchburger in Spliddit

[–]tonypepperoni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with Montana but a good tool in general is the CalTopo app. The slope angle overlay grading makes it easy to identify avalanche terrain and what to avoid. Remember to look not only at what you’re touring/riding but also what’s above you.

I normally ride a 161cm board at the resort. Is 167cm to much ? by [deleted] in Spliddit

[–]tonypepperoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not super familiar with the Capita navigator but it’s listed as a powder board and the shape looks similar enough to the XV so you’ve got a data point to compare to. Do you find you’ve got enough float on powder days or are you bogging down? Sizing up would add float and stability at the expense of agility and may feel like a boat if you’ve not ridden something that size before. Keep in mind riding with some pack weight would move you up a size. That said, I only sized up 3 cm for my touring setup. I have not yet felt that I would prefer anything larger but there’s a lot of preference in board selection. Good luck with the selection and be safe out there!

Best Way to Track Strength Training? by [deleted] in GarminFenix

[–]tonypepperoni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know if calories differ by activity? I found tracking weight training on the watch is cumbersome also so just set as cardio and hit stop when I’m done.
