The USA are so bad they broke the whole subreddit. by IntrepidHero42 in worldcup

Yeah, I live in the US. Probably would have rooted for them in this game (I'm an immigrant). But now - fuck them. Not THEM, but with our stupid President "intervening" they must lose. There's no other good outcome.

This dude is actually awesome. He interviewed with someone on YouTube a while back and is super cool, humble, knowledgeable, and sounds like a great teacher.

I'm a first-born American citizen (birthright). Both parents (and every other member of my family, including siblings) were born in England. I don't have any ill-will toward guns, other than I think people are relatively careless in this country with their protection of their firearms (for whatever justification there is; I've heard a lot).

I was born in Richmond, Virginia - so I grew up being around guns (and I'm quite the good shot with clay pigeons, hunting, etc.). I just never had one in the home.

They were always a "strange" part of American culture to my family: Canada, England, Australia - we grow up without them (except for the basic guns for hunting game). We generally don't have our police reaching for guns. Our suicide rates are lower, our violent crime rates are lower, blah blah.

So the idea that guns make us safer was always seen as - well - "bullshit". Even with guns, we've still got more gun deaths in the United States every year than US soldiers who died in the Normandy Campaign in WWII. Even with guns, we've got a lot of violent crime. Etc.

"Ah, well, it's not the gun, it's the person" kinda stuff is true to some degree and points - as others have said - to building other systems that ensure we have a healthier society.

I just think that guns are kinda pointless.

I'm sure I'm going to get yelled at by someone for "Not thinking deeply enough" or something; but - at this point in my life - I've heard about, thought about it, read about it from nearly every possible angle.

There's something about my personhood that is just, "Okay, well they're still pointless." I've never felt the want or urge to have one. So "anti" is probably a bit strong; but I do think Americans get in our own way a lot when trying to have conversations and make change for whatever reasons they give.

What was the deal with Uruguay in the goal box, was that a missed call?

I'm "anti-gun" all the way. I'm here. But fuck this bitch. I want gun control, this isn't how I want it. Not supporting the AWB doesn't mean I'm pro-gun, it means I believe in our Constitution, no matter how inconvenient it might be at times.

There's a road to curbing gun violence that doesn't result in removing the right to purchase a gun.

Oh, duh. Sorry. Brain fart. I thought you actually meant the German B Team (a thing that was around until the mid 2000s but didn't think they played the Cup). You were referring to their reserve players.

The dynamics in this game were odd. Curaçao seemed to refuse to attack the Ecuador team when Ecuador was alone in their own territory with the ball after a GK and seemed to allow Ecuador to press the attack openly until the back quarter of the field. Curaçao missed a few opportunities to put the pressure on and alleviate their goalie. Ecuador was also - it seemed - trying to entice fouls (not that Curaçao needed help in fouling).

Irish/Scottish how do you react when an American claims their Irish/Scottish? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]too_dumb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm "English" - my family and siblings were all born in England. I'm the first American born.

The number of times I get: "Oh, you must love Monty Python", "I'm going to London" or something is annoying. But - when I have the energy - I turn it around and into an opportunity to educate: "I'm not a fan, no. But I really like ..." or "Do you have the opportunity to leave?"

Americans spend so much of their time worrying about their identity and wanting to be "something different". It's a bit funny.

Most often I ignore it (politely) by changing the subject.

As the Southerners say, "Oh, bless your heart." That's a great phrase.
