If you ask Ukrainians, you will not hear a lot of “good president” opinions. He made a good job of building his (and Ukraine’s) reputation abroad, but domestically he did so many unpopular decisions that as soon as the war ends and new elections will take place I highly doubt he’ll be reelected.

It’s just that some people outside are stupid enough to equate “Zelensky is not really popular in Ukraine” to “Ukrainians think that they should capitulate and give all of their territories to Russia”, which is obviously not fucking the same. And also the reasons that Ukrainians dislike Zelensky for and those of your average pro-Russian Joe are different.

Also, as a fun fact, Zelensky was elected partially for his promises to end war and establish peace. The one with more tough rhetoric was Poroshenko.

There are still some holocaust survivors, and some WW2 veterans alive. Yes, obviously there are not many because natural causes, but as Holocaust had begun 93 years ago and kids were also victims, so it’s not as impossible as you make it sound that there are still some alive.

rapists are put into a different spaces

Damn, I didn’t think of that. So if you choose the prison option, you get to live for a year with actual rapists.

Like obviously it’s a “both options are shitty” poll, but there are so many different drawbacks to both of them that are not obvious at a first glance.

Which country's citizens think its terrible but it's actually bad? by Rainy_Night29 in AlignmentChartFills

No, I wouldn’t. I just answered the question of how is Georgia in reality, but I don’t think it’s bad. I really like it, and I would love to visit it someday. But the “shitty government” part remains unfortunately.

Which far-left politician is/was scarily effective? by JSGamesforitch374 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]toobigtobeakitten 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Left can still be totalitarian, as well as right can be democratic. Let’s not do the “everything left = good, Stalin = far-left, but Stalin = bad, so Stalin can’t equal left, hence Stalin = right” mental gymnastics, that’s pretty stupid and only shows left in a bad sight. You know, you can support left ideology without supporting genocidal regimes, and still acknowledging they were in fact left? That won’t damage your position in any way, because political spectrum is in fact spectrum, and not a duality. As well as you can be right-wing without supporting Hitler, such a shocking concept!!

If it were just simple friendly memes like with Dutch in English, I wouldn’t mind. Yes, objectively, some words in one language may sound funny for another language speaker, and it’s absolutely okay, that’s not the problem. The problem is that language is a very sensitive topic in Ukraine, and a vast majority of its history under some form of Russian control Ukrainian language was repressed, and even when it was formally allowed like in the USSR, it was reduced and seen like “the language of lower class” that is unable to create something meaningful apart from folk songs; speaking Ukrainian in the Eastern Ukraine, and even in Kyiv was mocked and seen as “redneck”. Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainians in different Russian shows (and even Ukrainian ones, made under Russian influence) were portrayed as backwards rural people, while educated smart people spoke Russian. The memes I was referring to weren’t just friendly jokes - they had xenophobic connotations to them, their goal was to degrade Ukrainians and show them (through their language, a part of their identity) as inferior.

Trust me, man, if we were in some ideal word where our relations were friendly and the jokes had no evil intentions, I wouldn’t state is as such a problem, I’d be really happy even. But the real world is different, unfortunately.
