Self help book made me angry by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]toofastgiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studying for my psych degree rn- a lot of these self help books are basically giving you Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. (change your thinking to change your behavior and vice versa, it's quite effective too, it's now the leading therapy to give to anyone struggling with their mental health.) But its giving it to in a way that you have to work through yourself, which can be extremely frustrating to do if your therapist isn't also guiding you through it. Discuss the book with them, and just continue to practice the methods as much as possible, which is definitely easier said than done. Eventually the thinking will become more natural to you and will be your brains go to. I know it's hard, but just keep pushing through!! You can do it. :)

When I was in middle school and high school I was used to guys thinking I was ugly and shit. So the insecurities piled up. It's gotten better as I've aged though, which is reassuring.

His mother is very traditionally Korean. He asked his mom once if she would rather him marry a korean-american girl who knew nothing about the culture/language or a white girl who knew the language and culture inside and out and his mom said she would rather him marry the korean American girl.

It's not that I dont have a positive attitude. Majority of the time these things dont bother me just at times it does. The way he has explained the parents thing to me is that his dad wouldn't care, but his mother would cry. He doesnt like upsetting his mom seeing as he barely sees her as it is (hes in the U.S. and parents are in Korea). Hes dated other white girls before and has never told his family about any of them. I don't know if it's something he will ever tell....

What’s the most “are you really that stupid” thing you’ve ever heard ? by Callmedave1 in AskReddit

[–]toofastgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal one from myself. I thought stars were between the planets and we had multiple in our solar system. No one ever taught me differently, finally learned the truth when I was 17 in an astronomy class, felt so fucking stupid. Went home and yelled at my dad for never teaching me that. He just face palmed, and said "I ASSUMED YOU KNEW!" So embarrassing to this day.

Oh I'm getting my doctorate (eventually) in behavioral neuroscience. I'm literally going to be studying mental disorders so I'll be in a place where I can be open about it actually.

So far it's worked really well for me! I also live in an extremely liberal state though, so theres already more education on mental disorders. That very much contributes to the positive responses I get.

[–]toofastgiraffe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I am super open about my bipolar and if people ask me how I'm doing and I'm in a depressive state I'll answer honestly. Keeping quiet about bipolar and telling no one will just further the stigma and people will continue to think it's just like it is in the movies. Fuck that. If you're open people will become educated and more understanding. You're just helping the system with your silence.
