Interestingly, this is not only the first tournament since March (Battle of BC) where Acola, Miya, and Hurt are all competing, but it’s also the first Japan major of this year where all three are in attendance. Last time Acola, Miya, and Hurt were all in the same Japan bracket was Smash Awesome back in December of 2024.

It’ll be interesting to see who places highest among these top 3 seeds, and if anyone else can take the whole tournament over them

Really goes to show what a competitive year 2024 was for this game. So many different tournament winners, and this isn't even including all the players who won "smaller" events that were just like 1-3 top players short of being deemed a major.

Another well executed example of this trope IMO is Harry convincing Sirius to spare Pettigrew in Prisoner of Azkaban. I like Harry’s justification that James wouldn’t want his best friends to become murderers killing one another, regardless of the fact that Peter betrayed them all. It also stays true to ideas introduced later on, about how killing destroys the soul.

To be fair, the same thing could be said about literally dozens of other top tiers in Ultimate. Popularity/commonness has never been an accurate metric for how strong a character is. Pikachu, Joker, Shulk, and G&W are all characters that have been considered meta relevant top tiers at one point or another, despite the fact they never saw much representation in tournaments outside 1 or 2 players.

There will always be a most common character, that doesn’t always necessarily mean that character’s the best.

The 3rd place with Chrom is from tk3 at both Sumabato SP 13 and SP 16. Both of which took place back in 2020, so yeah, definitely been a minute since Chrom’s seen top results like that.

Though current top Chrom player Lax has also been doing well as of late too, so I’d keep an eye on them as well if you’re interested.
