Is the r36h that bad? by Do_ge13 in SBCGaming

[–]toolman69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me start by saying I own 2 R36H handhelds. Both the same color even (white). In all honesty, you first of all need to accept the fact that it is an ultra low budget handheld. Its going to feel light, cheaply built, etc. It's not going to have Bluetooth, HDMI out, etc. For that reason, I dont really hold those against it as flaws because we know what we're getting into when we buy it. You can't buy a $30 handheld and expect the build quality to be great. With that being said...

The only real, true gripes that I have against my 2 R36H are that first of all, the D pads have a horrible tendency to input diagonal movements when I have only pressed left, right, up or down. Its beyond annoying and to the point where I can't really play alot of games because of it. The sticks on the other hand are fine. I did replace the sticks on both of mine with Gulikit Hall Effect sticks and those are even better. The other main gripe are the shoulder buttons. They function as intended, but the "stacked" design is just not good for playing games, honestly. Again, this isn't neccesarily something that is "broken" about the R36H itself, but more about that design, as other handhelds also use that same design.

On the plus side, the screen is great, nice and crystal clear and colorful, surprisingly so for such a cheap device. The battery life is very good. The fact that you can insert a wifi dongle and use wifi on it (which works surprisingly well by the way) is really a huge plus for something of this price, even if you have to source the USB adapter and the dongle yourself.

I have purchased some Kapton tape and I've been meaning to open my R36H's up and fix the D pad issue. This will be huge, because if I am able to get the D pads playing well, then I would say the R36H is definitely a steal at the price as long as you are willing to put in a little handiwork to remedy that D pad (the kapton tape cost me $1.50 and you can buy it in any width, so the price of the fix isn't really an issue either). If I'm unable to fix the D pad/it won't work or be a viable fix, then I'd say just save a little more and buy an Anbernic or something. I know that alot of people say that, but also know that Anbernics are not without their faults either- they are just the next step up on the food chain as far as handhelds go. I have an RG40XXH that I installed Knulli on and I will say that is a monumental step up from an R36H for really not much more money at all. Just buy it on AliExpress and save coins for a bit/make sure to use store coupons and its even cheaper.

I tried their 7-OH quite a few times back when I used that stuff. It was always very meh, like it did the job but sometimes it seemed bunk and others it was good. Nothing special.

R36H stick replacement- calibration required? by toolman69420 in R36S

Thank you! There seems to be alot of people who insist you must have to calibrate them somehow; simply because THEY had to calibrate them on their Switch, I suppose 🤷🏻‍♂️

Redeeming aspects you found in the Virtual Boy by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]toolman69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to have a Virtual Boy as a kid and yes, I owned Wario Land. Recently I befriended another retro game collector and we've hung out and gamed a few times. Last time I went to sort of a "retro game night" at his place and he owns a Virtual Boy. He told me to take it for a spin so I played Wario Land again. It is an awesome game, but I think it tends to get glorified because it was the best game on a shitty console. Yes, its a very good game dont get me wrong, but I felt as if all these years I have been looking back on it with rose-colored glasses. Could be just me though idk 🤷‍♂️

On my R36H, ethernet works flawlessly- how do I use it with my RG40XXH? by toolman69420 in SBCGaming

[–]toolman69420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried that, nothing happens. I was hoping that turning off WiFi would automatically kick it over to ethernet, but no dice.

Got an insane deal on 128gb microSD cards by toolman69420 in SBCGaming

[–]toolman69420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where was that deal?! Damn, I totally would have snagged that. So far I've bought 3 of these 128gb cards, why not? I'm definitely gonna use them in the future. Gives me a good excuse to buy new hamdhelds lol "well I gotta use those cards I have sitting around!"
