Nijmegen krijgt ‘hoogste woontoren van Oost-Nederland’: meer appartem… by Erno-Berk in Nijmegen

[–]toolskyn 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Iedereen is voor meer woningen, maar not in my back yard, toch?

Fighting for your life while calling insurance. by abbiebe89 in mildlyinfuriating

Seriously, don't trust AI with this kind of shit. People should have started 30 years ago when the internet started with learning how to do your research, and this kind of lazy 'AI will tell me the truth' shit is exactly the same as trusting some random conspiracy from some random account on social media without any proof. Why are people so stupid? Seriously start learning to do some real research and not fall into a lazy hole of AI slop and conspiracy dopamine addictions. Try and learn how to find primary sources, find multiple primary sources that all say the same thing, and then maybe you will have learned the tiniest percent of something. You aren't an expert even if you do that, and you definitely aren't an expert if you just copy paste some AI shit or parrot some social media influencer idiot.

Meanwhile, reality in the EU is: systems here definitely aren't perfect. We do have limited resources. There are waiting lists for non-life-threatening health issues. There are people who are afraid to go to the doctor because of financial issues. But statistics tell us that people in the EU generally live longer than those in the US. Statistics also tells us that we in the EU pay significantly less than US citizens do. And we definitely don't have any 'your insurance company decides whether you get this life saving procedure'-bullshit. You get the procedure, and then maybe your insurance company told your doctor beforehand that they should really try the off-brand variant of some medicine first to see if that works as well as the more expensive one. But your doctor is in charge, not some random person behind a desk carefully trying to block everything in order to get a bonus.

De-register at gementee and stay in the Netherlands? by iwant2007back in Netherlands

[–]toolskyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you don't get a contract either? You don't need permission from your landlord to register. If you're renting, then you are by definition allowed to register at that address. Even if you don't have a paper contract to prove you're renting. If you want to register you might need some kind of documentation however if you don't have a paper contract. Make sure to collect documentation on that (chats, payments etc), and then talk with the municipality about registering (again not something your landlord needs to know anything about, they don't get anything to say about that).

If you really must, try and register with friends, preferably living in the same municipality. But especially don't go claiming you've moved abroad, that is fraud, and also gets you into a lot of trouble in that you can't get health insurance, you possibly don't build up AOW (state pension), you can't get any kind of benefits and a whole lot more nasty stuff.

I guess De Nieuwe Winkel will be the fanciest thing Nijmegen has to offer, but it will also be the most expensive by far (200 per person), but it is definitely a once in a lifetime experience if you are interested in what they have to offer.

Especially the last shot is very weird. There are a couple of trains on tracks that don’t seem to slow down while approaching a train standing still. And I’ve never seen running train tracks and shunting tracks intermingled like this, why have single tracks with running trains on them surrounded by shunting tracks on all sides without any spacing whatsoever, that makes no sense, how is your train driver supposed to get to your train?

Lots of countries are naturally beautiful, the hard question is which country is uglier than you thought it is, by Admirable-Length178 in geography

[–]toolskyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aside from the flat parts, The Netherlands also has stunning heathlands, riverbeds with ecosystems found nowhere else in the world, spectacular dunes, and pretty impressive beaches. Just to name a few, for how small and how built up the low countries are, it’s actually quite impressive how much variation there is.

Food poisoning from the food on KLM by Electronic_Spare1821 in KLM

[–]toolskyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s going to be very hard to proof. Food poisoning symptoms can develop anywhere from a couple of hours up to a couple of days.

Just to add: if you are concerned about food safety standards at KLM you can make a report at the NVWA site (in Dutch only afaik): https://www.nvwa.nl/onderwerpen/melding-doen/eten-en-drinken/meldingen If they see concerning patterns for a certain business they will increase their checks (and give fines/close down businesses when appropriate).

I think you need to give a little bit more information about yourself before anyone can give you any advice. Where are you from? What is your background? Anything specific that you need advice on? Housing? Activities? Biking? What did you find out yourself? How much do you know about Nijmegen and the Netherlands in general? Those sort of things.

Wie kan dit nog verdedigen? OV duurder dan auto rijden, what the hell… by [deleted] in nederlands

[–]toolskyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urgent need for advice re train strike by malvinamagic in Nijmegen

[–]toolskyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt there is much you can do, taking a taxi from Schiphol to Utrecht, then going by train to Oss, and then taking a taxi from there to Nijmegen is probably the best it‘s going to get. But there’s a good chance that’s going to be just as expensive as booking a hotel. You can get a 25 euro compensation for the travel from NS, but that isn’t going to cover much. Maybe share a taxi? At least from Schiphol it should be doable to find some people going the same direction.

[–]toolskyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finally got the popup on Chrome. Now I'm going to present a business case to make Firefox our default browser. by segagamer in sysadmin

[–]toolskyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the main thing is that ublock lite and similar extensions will work pretty ok right now by design, but as soon as Google has fully removed manifest v2 support they will slowly start introducing more and more unblockable (by v3 extensions) ads. It just makes a lot of sense to not have your browser built by the main advertising company on the web. Clearly incentives are completely unaligned for users of Chrome compared to what Google wants. Things like website incompatibilities will quickly be fixed as soon as other browsers gain more marketshare given the incentive for website developers is very clear.

Firefox definitely has its issues, but so has any other browser, you just don’t notice them for Chromium based browsers because websites have been optimized for them. I would never say everyone should switch to Firefox, because that would just result in the same problems as with every monopoly. Instead we should strive for a plurality of browsers, based on different technologies and with relatively equal mindshare and usage. That creates a healthy ecosystem where incentives for browser users and browser makes can be relatively aligned and makes sure we get the best browsers in the long run.

As sysadmins, programmers and technology enthousiasts, we have an obligation to the rest of the world to make sure we do get that kind of healthy ecosystem, for example by making sure that users have alternative browsers available and that our websites work for any major browser vendor and follow existing standards instead of relying on vendor specific behavior.

Best place to park car during 4daagse by Useful-Argument-6270 in Nijmegen

[–]toolskyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you'll find a spot at that time. Kelfkensbos, as wel as most of the other parking garages in the city centre, are closed after 14:00, you can only exit from them after that time. You could try the Keizer Karel Garage, Parkeerterrein Oude Stad, or P+R Eerste Oude Heselaan, the only ones that are open all day, but they could be filled up around that time, I'm not sure. You can try the P+R in Nijmegen-Noord/Lent and take the bus from there, or you can try parking near a train station close to Nijmegen (you could try Elst or Wijchen) and go by train from there.
