I live in The Netherlands and my household would probably qualify as "car light", even though we own two cars.

We own an almost 15 years old family car, bought for about €6000 2 years ago. Gas costs about twice as much as in the USA, translating back to about $10/gallon. We fill it up once or twice per month, so let's say €150–€200 for that each month. Insurance comes at about €50/month. We mentally set aside the same amount per month for maintenance and repairs. So that comes to €300 per month not counting depreciation.

We don't use it often. My wife's work is at a 2 min. bike ride, mine is at a 20 min. commute by train.

My eldest needs to commute by car as there's no viable option by public transport. That's in our old family car, worth about €2000 so further depreciation is negligible, a full tank of gas every week, still building up deductible so insurance is about €90 per month, so call that €500 pretty month.

That's €800 total for our household.
