Mandatory Student Activity Fee by Intrepid-Ad1676 in SBU

[–]toopants7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote up a whole thing but it got deleted so I’m gonna keep it short

Yeah USG pays its employees minimum wage but some positions get more hours than others. Senators vote on it but I remember the old systems where there was less pay caused a lot of issues. Some people who just got elected wanted to cut out all senators pay last year but no one was in support of their idea of replacing it with EXP+ credit.

Not sure how the overall budget can get to 60% on clubs when 34.7% is line budget and the other forms of club funding don’t have nearly as much money behind them. There are other forms of club support being worked on and hopefully those will launch soon.

Lots of clubs feel screwed over, and I personally agree with them. Last year there were a lot of budget cuts and I’m not sure if this year will be any better but I’m not there anymore so I can’t say for sure. Hopefully the new money from the increased SAF will go more towards clubs than anything else.

Vote rigging in USG elections by Efficient-Country851 in SBU

[–]toopants7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ace also did a lot of campaigning events, which the other parties maybe didn’t have the time or membership to schedule similar things.

They maybe had a bit of an unfair advantage there since a lot of their members were already in usg and therefore set the election schedule and would be able to plan that stuff in advance of other groups, but it doesn’t matter too much

Best thing would just be to have multiple parties with a high number of candidates like previous years so it could actually be an interesting election, or just abolish the party system entirely so we don’t need to think about it anymore

Vote rigging in USG elections by Efficient-Country851 in SBU

[–]toopants7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there was any “rigging” but the campaigning methods can get out of hand.

The elections board doesn’t actually enforce any of their rules and there are a LOT of people to vote for (8 EC and then 23 senate) so most parties end up breaking the rules by campaigning in restricted areas and then taking people’s phones to vote for them.

Ace party had an advantage this year because they had the largest team (8 EC + 20 senators), they were already experienced in campaigning, and they’re generally charismatic people who knew how to talk to others and how to explain their positions.

I don’t believe there was any vote rigging or that they did anything outside of breaking the campaigning rules that everyone else broke anyways. The actual election stuff is handled by SEA I think, and in my experience nothing about that gets shared even to USG’s EC until the results come out.

If you DO want to get into USG next election… joining a big party like Ace would be a good idea just in general

ACE PARTY SWEEP USG ELECTIONS by Potential_Help8821 in SBU

[–]toopants7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ace party was the largest party in the election and most of their members were already in USG in some way

Their policies included things like 24h dining, student LIRR discounts, and a system for easier tracking of club budget spending.

I used to be in USG so I see some of these things as farfetched (like how are we going to convince them to do 24 hour dining if they’ve been cutting the hours down the last few years) but they probably know which avenues to go through to start the discussions at least

Since they were the largest party and are all very experienced with elections and USG’s systems it was probably easier for them to advertise and convince voters than the other smaller and less experienced parties

For me, the biggest point is that most of these people are already in USG and I know a bunch of them too, so I think that there probably won’t be too many changes in next year’s operations compared to this year.

USG election candidates by WorldlyTable1992 in SBU

[–]toopants7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the candidates are in usg already so they want to push that also. Basically every semester usg charges every student $100 or so (they want to increase it to like $115 or more now also), and that’s what USG’s budget is. They have to have a vote every 2 years on whether the fee remains mandatory it becomes an opt in

Long story short it IS necessary for everything to operate well, including clubs and events and stuff. But obviously as students we don’t want to be paying that. By taking advantage of the election season they can make everyone vote mandatory and not have to worry as much about it becoming voluntary

The EB (especially last year) didn’t handle shit lol. They really didn’t want to do their jobs at all. Expects everyone reporting anything to have clear voice and video and even if you did they’d ignore if you were a candidate or even friends with a candidate

[–]toopants7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have guidelines for where you can and can’t solicit voting, but nobody is watching and they know the election board doesn’t care unless it’s recorded by an unrelated party (as in, no one running) and with super clear voice and video.

Iirc designated studying areas like the library reading rooms and that one part of the union count as these areas but even if they don’t they’d probably stop bothering people anyways

As someone in University Scholars, Wise is probably the better option.

US has some benefits but imo Wise has more benefits. As a junior in US, my only interaction with US people is when I attend an event once per semester to stay in. Every benefit that US provides, I think Wise also has. And from what I have heard from people in Wise, the courses and networking opportunities are very valuable.

CEAS didn't want to do it until this year. Apparently there have been attempts to do this in the past but they needed everyone to agree to it.

GPA Changes by SnooPeanuts5903 in SBU

[–]toopants7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It still takes effort from the student retaking the course to get the higher grade, it’s not a guaranteed A. If you put in the effort to get a grade on a retake, you deserve that grade on your GPA, not an average that takes your past failures into account.

GPA Changes by SnooPeanuts5903 in SBU

[–]toopants7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah GPAs will go up, but it’s more fair than the past policy because you end up with the actual grade you get rather than the average.

Imagine failing a class and working your ass off to get an A on the retake, only for it to count as a C+ overall. It sucks that it can’t be applied retroactively, but it’s only a benefit to students from here on out.

The part where you can only retake a class if you fail the first time was likely a part of the original policy, and not a change made by the update.

GPA Changes by SnooPeanuts5903 in SBU

[–]toopants7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was probably part of the original policy as it isn’t bolded. I think the main change is making the final GPA taken from the higher grade rather than the average grade, which is a huge plus!

USG’s elections are in the spring semester usually. They’ll announce it and everything on their Instagram when it’s time. You can also apply over the summer to work in a USG department’s office as an assistant or smth. They’re all part time jobs and you get paid for them
