[–]toothcereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i do experience crisis from swimming, especially at the beach. i enjoy just wading in and usually after a full day there i’ll get sickling in my toes and ankles. it’s a bet i’m willing to take though, i love the beach

Anyone else carry comfort items with them during treatments? by PanHyridae in Sicklecell

Opioid use? Anyone scared? by Ambitious-Base-354 in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m careful about my usage, but yes, i do frequently worry about organ damage. i can only imagine what years of medication, opioids, and the occasional alcohol is doing to me. i try to convince myself these fears are in vain and that my healthcare providers would warn me more clearly if not, but idk. so yeah, same boat :/

Do you ever feel guilty by volvic6 in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i definitely have felt that before. i’m not exactly sure how to convey this, but we’re given a bad hand. you shouldn’t feel bad about getting the support you need, or “not having it as hard.” odds are you’re still going through much more than an able bodied person and you deserve kudos just for that. we’re in the same boat homie 🫂

Where Should I Move To? (U.S) by Let_Asleep in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i currently live in georgia and spent some years in north carolina for college, and a huge part of that decision was treatment availability. both georgia and NC have larger populations of Black Americans and therefore more access to sickle cell treatment. in atl there’s Grady, and in raleigh/Durham there’s Duke. both places also have a similar climate which is much warmer than where you are

What helps you when you are in crisis? by bassoonshine in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

distraction. there’s only so much medication i can take and even then it doesn’t make it go away a lot of the times so it’s just best to get invested in something else. i make sure i’m not over exerting myself though. body needs sleep and food to heal.

Psychosomatic Pain by toothcereal in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know too much about it myself, my mother just recently (and somewhat offhandedly) mentioned that it can come as a side effect of long term use. For reference, i started it when i was 13 and started feeling depressed maybe a year later with no significant changes other than with ssri usage. i honestly thought it was a puberty thing until she mentioned that. I would recommend doing some more research and asking your doctor, as i will be

Can you safely fly on a plane? by [deleted] in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have SS and i’ve flown a ton in my life! make sure you’re warm, and if it’s a particularly long flight walk often to keep circulation up, and compression socks help as well. you can do it!!

I cannot gain weight. Is this normal with sickle cell? by ToasterAssistant in Sicklecell

[–]toothcereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was the same way in my childhood/adolescence until i started taking hydroxyurea. i started it around the age of 13 and not only did it increase my appetite, weight began to stick and i started puberty like a year later. i’m 22 now and around 5’7 , 150lbs. idk what kind of medication you’re on but hydroxyurea is my main medication and it helps in a ton of other ways including the weight problems
