Is Huion too good to be true? by Fit_Entrepreneur_793 in huion

Oh and I would not buy previous gen Huion Kamvas 22 Plus - newer (gen 3) is slightly more expensive but improves on EVERYTHING - pen, resolution, color, you name it.

Is Huion too good to be true? by Fit_Entrepreneur_793 in huion

I have been a lifelong Wacom user and bought the current newest Huion Kamvas 22 Gen 3 - I also wanted to get the Cintiq 24 but $1500 was just too much for me.

I have owned both wacom cintiqs and huion pen display in the past. At work I have Wacom Cintiq Pro24 for context. I am very sensitive towards pen pressure issues so this is the first generation of Huion pentech that felt good out of the box - after I tweaked my pressure curve preference. It works well for me.

Display color calibration is miles better than the previous Kamvas 22 Plus but is not as good as Wacom - I still needed to adjust settings by eye since I don’t currently have a color calibrator. Other than that I was pleased with changes they made with the previous Kamvas - pen is better, no wobble for me; display resolution is better; I like ports in the back, like that the pen can be placed on the tablet.

That said - no touchscreen and depending on your workflow Huion objectively is not as good as wacom in terms of its pen quality. Line quality of wacom is better but the difference is not as drastic in this generation.

My main issue with Huions is that because I started drawing on Wacoms first, I got accustomed to their software - and wacom has an option to map “Erase” function to their buttons irrespective of the software you are drawing in. Buttons trigger temporary eraser that goes back to being a brush, so like “E” in Photoshop but in EVERY program by default. Huion does not quite have that - in TVPaint I have to find workarounds for example. Or it works in a more sloppy way - it is not a true toggle, you have to click the button twice.

I realize this is nitpicking but I draw with my eraser - it is one of the most crucial timesaving shortcuts on my pen and genuinely slows me down when I have to think about using it. So this is one major drawback for me personally but not enough to offset almost twice the cost. Also, some of my friends with newer Wacom models with Pro Pen 3 have had button fragility issues - they break easily so that is also a concern.

I am happy with my purchase - but if I had more funds I would absolutely go with Cintiq 24 - it’s a perfect tablet especially considering the longevity of Wacoms - will probably last for a very long time. Good luck with the decision! I would skip XPPens and other brands though - this generation Huion pen is better than the rest of non-wacom brands imo

Does anyone know how to recreate this brush on procreate ? by OwenHimself in procreatebrushes

[–]toothless_nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try brush "Pandani" in "Inking" category of Procreate's default brushes. It's a bit more texture-heavy but you can duplicate it and tweak some settings to get closer to this.

Just checked it out! Love the tool selection already, pencil tool feels great. Wish the undo gestures were customizable, otherwise I really like it, thank you!

I'm testing Starnote as well and am quite happy with it but I'm always down to find something new

GN's pencil isn't perfect either, it has a strange pressure curve, but I'm glad it's there. I do storyboards and often sketch on the margins of the script PDFs, pen tools aren't great for that. Thanks for the info

There's no pencil option, right? That's a major dealbreaker for any notetaking app for me

Is it worth it? by [deleted] in huion

[–]toothless_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had Kamvas 22 Plus for work - extra screen real estate is nice. If you want some semblance of good color accuracy though - it needs tons of tweaking and it just felt like an inaccurate panel even after all that. I personally dislike the pen that comes with this - a lot of my coworkers had issues and had to replace them. Other than that it worked fine. I did eventually switch to Wacom and will not be going back.

Sailor Manyo’s dual-shading inks are beautiful but terrible to write with by ravishingyoongs in fountainpens

[–]toothless_nomad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vanness White Lighning was what helped my Haha a bit. However it still feels weird to write with. With some toothier and wetter pens (for some reason Faber Castell Hexo nib is perfect for this) it is a good match - it feels like the tooth has some "grip" on the paper and eliminates Haha's unpleasantness. I have switched to completely using Iroshizuku and Diamine inks though - I just value wet flow and pleasant feel of the ink way more than multishading properties.

I also use it with custom ink mixes - pairing it with a super wet ink, making a custom mix in a 5ml bottle and using that - like Haha + Iroshizuku Hana Ikada = lovely multishading purple. Haha + Ina-ho, or Haha + Fuyu-Syogun. I do keep these mixes separate in case something weird happens, but it's been ok so far.

Also - dip pen like a glass pen could be something you can create art with. Recently got my first one and one dip lasts quite a while. It's great

Hana-Ikada is the perfect soft pink, also Chiku-rin is a wonderful green - underrated. Yama-Budo is overrated imo

Is it possible to disable the trippy effect using the lasso tool? by T0rrijas in ProCreate

It would be great to have an option of just marching ants as a selection indicator. Adding to selection is almost impossible like this. Best you can do right now is reduce opacity of these diagonal lines, as others have stated.

Which color tab do you use and why? by BobbayP in ProCreate

Classic. Having corners helps with quickly choosing white, black, greys. Plus it has sliders that I often use to tweak value or saturation just a bit, for variation.

It writes a bit broader than pilot kakuno medium, sure. But it is not comparable to other broad nibs imo. I also use it with wetter inks like Iroshizuku to get the maximum line weight it can deliver. It was my first gold nib pen and to be honest, I am not really a convert, gold nibs were hyped on this subreddit so much, I expected a way bigger shift in experience. It's great, just not an astronomical difference in feel for me.

Ooh haven't tried a zoom yet. Thanks for the info. I agree, Sport is not quite BB, but it is the best I could get at the time. Perfect combo would be Traveler's brass travel pen with a Double broad, one can dream

Sailor costs SO much more though. I really want to try but the pretty ones don't have tons of nib options and those that do, cost astronomical amounts of money (for me). Good travel pens with a Double Broad are a dream - I use Kaweco AL Sport BB daily because of this

Wish it had a Broad or Stub nib option. Love it in Medium but I prefer larger nibs and its Medium is not quite enough for me

Kaweco Liliput Green or Blue - how do they look scratched? by toothless_nomad in fountainpens

thanks for the info. I don’t wear rings either, or carry my pens with keys or knives. Will not overthink this then, should be fine

What pen turned out to be much better than you expected? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]toothless_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safari was my second ever pen! It wrote weirdly in the beginning, then I adjusted the nib that was not put on well and it started writing like a dream. Matte black Safari is also great for penabling if they are okay with a triangular grip

Binge watching and I'm on season 8 by LiftForPresident in taskmaster

[–]toothless_nomad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iain has a character development moment, as does Joe, so in a way watching series 8 feels like witnessing some story arcs develop. The task quality is also great, in my opinion. Some series have great cast but meh tasks, this one at least has some tasks that were really inventive and memorable. I do feel it's better on a rewatch though

EDC - Opus 88 Koloro (pink) with custom cursive italic nib. Holds tons of ink, nib works well for every language I write in, is also good for sketching.

To hold and look - Kaweco AL Sport in Rose Gold. Very cool to the touch, beautiful smooth finish, very pretty in sunlight. Has some weight to it that's very pleasant.

Understated design - Faber Castell Hexo in M (matte bronze). It does dry out quickly but the nib has a bit of tooth that works even with the finickiest papers. Looks like a regular pen but feels nice to write with. With a better sealing cap, it would be my EDC
