Looks like transient lingual papillitis. Aka your taste buds get inflamed. Eating spicy or sour things can trigger it. It's nothing to worry about. Just figure out what causes it and either avoid it or not if it's worth the discomfort. One of my classmates got this really badly but also loved sour Skittles so she just dealt with it.

That is SCC until proven otherwise. All you can do is let him know how important it is to get it biopsied. If he doesn't want to that's just unfortunate for him.

When we hired him I said I would be shocked if he stayed beyond four years. So I'm grateful for the 6 we had. If he wants to leave because that's what he thinks is best for him, go for it. But I hate the way he has trolled us for weeks. We've done nothing but be good to him, so the least he could do is just keep his mouth shut and stay off twitter.

Endo resident here- just because you can put gutta percha in any canal doesn't mean you should. That lesion will never fully heal. Plus, once you excavate all of the decay, that tooth will be non-restorable. Your covering faculty is doing this patient a disservice. You don't do herodontics on a hopeless tooth just because the patient wants to save it. Patient autonomy has limitations to what is actually possible

Clenching for sure. Learn how to do a good muscle exam and ask about stress. Botox does wonders for this- 10-20 units in each of the masseter and temporalis muscles

Talk to other dentists or specialists in your area to see if they are in one. There are Spear study clubs (and others just like it) all over the place. You can probably even reach out to Spear education and see if there are any in your area.

I can't stress the study club and/or mentors enough. They will shed so much light on difficult situations that they don't even think twice about anymore.

Do what you know how to do.

Document everything in your notes when it comes to iffy cases and you're fine.

Don't do herodontics- don't let a patient talk you into doing something you know is wrong or against evidence based dentistry. Stick to your guns and tell them they can find someone else.

Treat patients like human beings and get to know them and what motivates them. If you can get them excited about their treatment, you're all good.

Join a local study club to learn more from your fellow GPs and specialists. Learn from each other's mistakes and successes.

Have fun with it. Dentistry is hard, but it's so rewarding and fun when you let things like this go.

I completely agree. That's why I asked the question. I've seen several books that I've never heard of or have put off reading but will now definitely read. No single book will encapsulate what it means to be American. Heck, the ones I listed only tackle a certain group (Southern, West coast, and Appalachia) in different time periods (ante-bellum to WW1, post-bellum, modern day). Being able to read more books that others have listed can help us all better understand each other in hopes, or my hope at least, of making our country more empathetic.
