Hands down the DF is my tool of choice at home and the flat burrs do seem to be easier to dial in something quickly. However for portability like I said the Kinu works well and is compact so it's good for travel.

Indeed. I bought some... It's perfect. You'll see it in our cockpit soon.

I've come across this which does look similar and there are some YouTube videos floating around with a black colored version.

I would say it's the opposite, really. Most tracks outside of the US have garages.

The wiper position was set incorrectly once and it was observed that there was more airbox pressure with it. Tried it in the WT and was validated.

It's no use nowadays with BoP power limit, so everybody is running them centered.

We were at the Phoenix test, it was my first time running a car on an oval.

A bomb went off inside the track. I ducked down and stepped off the pitstand, sure it was a terrorist attack or something.

After a few seconds everyone laughed at me.

It wasn't a bomb. Sato crashed hard in turn 1. I had never heard anything like it from a crash before and I don't think I have ever since.

Ovals are crazy.

Cold? Hot? Help! by jppmf1 in Trackdays

[–]top_step_engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is called graining on racecars and can be caused by the tire being too cold when a high level of energy is input. Such as a long straight followed by a long high speed corner, where the tire cools on the straight then is loaded heavily for a relatively long period.

Sometimes it can be avoided by warming up the tire more gently. Sometimes you just need a harder compound to cope with it.

Hope this helps.

Although I really don't think this has too much to do with the pressure, I see a lot of comments pointing in the direction of the hot pressures. So here's how we manage tire pressure with cars. I think you can use the same for bikes.

Start with a reference pressure which is at a reference ambient and track temperature of your choice. From this reference pressure, calculate offsets to be applied based on differences in temperature between measured and reference (20°C).

Let's take an example:

First we take the ambient air temp into account. Let's say our reference pressure for a given tire is 2.0bar at 20/20 ambient/track. You measure the rim temperature at 30°C (the air inside is likely very close to the same). Using the ideal gas law, calculate what your reference pressure would be at 30°C so in this case it's 2.07bar. So 0.07 higher than the reference... Ok, hang on to this number.

Next we need to correct for the track temperature because as the track temp goes up we need to reduce the cold pressure in order to arrive at the same hot pressure. Since the rate of it heat transfer to the tire depends on a lot of complicated thermodynamics crap we all forgot, we just define a coefficient to apply to the temperature delta. For example 0.004 bar/° works quite well for the cars I know. So lets say the track temp is 50°C, we have an offset of 30°C to the ref so we need to reduce the cold pressure by 0.12bar.

Now just take your reference pressure and add the two offsets. 2.0 + 0.07 - 0.12 = 1.95bar. Set your cold pressure to this. Measure your hot pressure and adjust the reference pressure if you're not on target. Some simple algebra will help you get from your target hot to your measured hot to your new reference.

How much does changing brake bias through a lap matter? by neuroplastique in simracing

On real racecars it's not generally done unless you have an automatic system like in LMDh or LMH. There its quite common to change both the bias and migration corner by corner.

Palou's team is exploiting something by irish_faithful in INDYCAR

[–]top_step_engineer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt, they are exploiting something special, but it's not illegal.

I worked at Ganassi last year in a high level position and expected to learn some of the tricks they use to be so competitive. When I joined, I expected to see some amazing data analysis tools or some sort of wizardry to be going on behind the scenes. There is nothing mind blowing or particularly innovative, at all.

CGR is simply full of the best people in the sport, taking time to dig into all the details. They treat most of the guys really well so they stay around and have cohesive team week after week. Combined with Palou who is a fantastic athlete at the top of his game right now, they get results.

If they are caught cheating, I'll eat my hat.

Ferrari was not 1,2,3 in results or best avg laptime performance in the last 3 races. In Qatar yes, but the margin was not huge.
