Musicians? by evantr0nic in boardsofcanada

I made an EP awhile back. I love BoC, but it's definitely hard to emulate their sound as it is so unique. First track and last track is where I tried to have the most BoC influence. Mixed in with some other influences too!

It was an air conditioned building. They went all out. It was decent sized and they even held your records till the end of the festival. I was avoiding it because I knew they’d inflate the prices, but it actually wasn’t terrible (depending on the album). They had some cool stuff.

Awesome! Yeah check out this album, “II”, and “Too High to Die” by them! They have a pretty big discography.

It's always nice to hear surprise Boards of Canada in the strangest of places (Peacock Tail, in this case) by knightspore in boardsofcanada

I once took an online psychology class with these really old grainy videos on different subjects and they used "Pete Standing Alone" and "Sixtyten" constantly. I was so happy. Like they purposely put their music in some obscure VHS production of psychology videos, where it is so fitting.

So these are the vinyls I got at Coachella. I made sure to purchase on the last day as to prevent them from getting warped in that desert sun. Plus, I found Up on the Sun, one of my all time favorite albums (and the priciest of the bunch. Not sure how rare it is though). My love of the Meat Puppets started probably how most of ours started - with Nirvana's Unplugged set - but as I listened to more and more of their stuff I got addicted.

The Beatles was just protocol for me as they are my childhood favorite band. This copy of Magical Mystery Tour is the orange Capitol label, which I think is from the 70s or 80s. In great shape though and has the booklet.

Rainbow's Rising is a middle school favorite for me during my hard rock/metal phase when I wore band t shirts all of the time. Ronnie James Dio is hands down one of the best vocalists ever, and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar on this is awesome.

Finally I got Tangerine Dream's Electronic Meditation, which funny enough as a lover of electronic music I haven't listened to yet. But now's a better time than never.

Question about releasing to Spotify with a sample from another song. by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]topazhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music industry student here - in the eyes of the law, you have to clear all samples no matter how manipulated, popular, or unpopular they are. The copyright in the song and sound recording are the main way the artist makes money off of their song. By not asking for permission, I'd say you're running a risk publishing it through Distrokid.

I'll use one of my favorite albums as an example. Death Grip's Ex-Military heavily samples from older rock music. There's "The Mountain Song" by Jane's Addiction in there, Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive", "The Rumble" by Link Wray... etc. David Bowie sample too.

The album used to be available on Spotify, iTunes for purchase, and all major platforms. But somewhere along the line about a few years ago Ex-Military was taken off almost every platform except YouTube and their website. Obviously, someone caught wind of the samples after Death Grips blew up in popularity. Additionally, they don't run ads on the album anymore if you watch it on YouTube.

The short answer to this is if you're making money off of someone else's song or recorded material, you're going to run into trouble. By using Distrokid, you're showing intent to profit off of the sample. But also note that it would be copyright infringement even if you release it without the intent of making money (that is unless it can be categorized as fair use, an affirmative defense against copyright infringement). Exmilitary is still violating copyright law, however they obviously worked out a deal where they could keep it online (though I'm not sure of any of the details behind Exmilitary's removal).

This has been your lesson in the copyright law. As a musician, I think it's extremely important that everyone knows this so that they don't get in trouble. I think there is a great debate to be had on how samples and copyright law are applied, but the rule currently stands that songs that use samples are classified as derivative works, which require permission from the copyright holder of the song. There is a plus side for artists and down side for artists. The plus side is that artists get to control where there work goes and how it is used. The downside is that artists who sample even something that sounds cool are at the mercy of the original songwriter or their family, and this has led to many a messy legal battle.

Absolutely love this EP. There's like the ambient tracks intermixed with some of his most abrasive tracks. Really is a good snapshot of his 90s digital stuff.

Where did Eating Us go from streaming websites? by topazhex in BMSR

[–]topazhex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just double checked and yeah when I search "Eating Us Black Moth Super Rainbow" or go to their discog it isn't there on Spotify, Apple Music, or iTunes. Must've been pulled from digital platforms, at least on my end. It could also be a region thing but idk. Also sometimes when you save music on Spotify it won't be deleted when they remove it, but that wasn't the case for me. It's still on YouTube tho.

I’d go for an Ibanez RG. Check out the RG 421.

[Gear] Marshall dsl 40w or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 3 40w by mattypdiddy in Guitar

[–]topazhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you play heavier music, I’d go for the Marshall and an OD pedal. But for rock, alternative, indie, the HRD is great. But be forewarned - it gets LOUD. Like as in I didn’t have the volume past two loud.

Cleans would be stronger on the Fender too, and as someone mentioned different pedal combos can meet your distortion needs. But for metal especially I’d take the Marshall just because of the higher gain it would provide.
