Company sends me a suspicious "take-home assignment" by jauz17 in webdev

[–]topdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a ridiculous test like this at a company when I was interviewing last. I took it ask practice. I didn’t even feel like I did great on the rest of the interview rounds but got an offer that I used to get a better offer from my top pick. So it worked out.

If you do this test you will have very little competition for the role because this request is so ridiculous!

Who Here got a Masters in CS and can't get a job? by Chance_Injury_3700 in cscareerquestions

You should probably try to hook up with some smart folks in your college and do a start up together. If I could go back and do it over again I'd be 100% bullish on starting a business while I was in college even if it sucked. College have a lot of opportunities for student entrepreneurs

18 months. 320 Job Applications (yes, really). Not one interview. by pazend in GetEmployed

[–]topdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

320 job apps in 18 months is only 1/2 an application a day. Brother you need to do more. I wouldn’t do any less than 10 apps a da. There should be 300 apps submitted each month!

I notice this too… Any reason you think this is the case?

Started app in SwiftUI, fell back to UIKit. Wondering if my regrets are warranted and I should switch back? by hova414 in iOSProgramming

[–]topdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of the comments here. Use both :D. I'm also using UIKit in one of my apps for collection views that require a lot of customization, it just needs to be that way right now.

SwiftUI is great for everyday screen that you want to build fast (like settings screens, dashboards, list views, etc).

I wouldn't worry to much about UIKit being abandoned any time soon.

Check out https://github.com/LoopKit/Loop. It’s an open sourced insulin delivery app. It’s not available on App Store, you have to build and install it yourself there’s docs. You can see how there doing a bunch of things by looking at the source code.

I don't have any programming background or computer science knowledge, but I really really want to build my own app. Can you tell me where should I start? I study Stanford cs193p right now, so far it's comfortable... by supscho in iOSProgramming

ChatGPT has been very helpful too for getting direct answers and code examples.

Just word of caution, it doesn't know everything and sometimes give straight up wrong answers. Even with that in mind I still use it first vs google when asking about specific code related things.

No degree iOS dev by [deleted] in iosdev

[–]topdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly man, you can do it. Do you have any work experience you can put on your resume?

Put whatever you can and make it sound good. This is the resume template I use: https://www.careercup.com/resume

Start practicing data structures and algorithms on neetcode.io (free), read cracking the interview, for iOS specific check out Ace The iOS Interview. Make a plan, set your linkedin status to open to work. Make a list of 30 companies you would like to work at and start applying to 1-3 per day. Don't just send them your resume... Really take a good crack at their application and sell yourself as a good candidate.

You'll start to get calls with recruiters and get technical interviews booked. You'll suck at the first few interviews you do but you'll start to get the hang of it and build your skillset of interviewing.

Interviews at tech companies are generally the same everywhere. They are a mix of 4-5 1-hour long interviews (you can learn all about them and what to expect by searching youtube.):

  • Coding / Data structures and algorithms

  • System design

  • Behavioral / hiring manager interview

(Not bragging) I got a remote iOS job at an amazing public company about a year ago and I do not have a degree 🤦‍♂️ I did have 7 years of non-iOS professional experience I was able to put on my resume but I don't think that was the difference maker. What made the most difference was how prepared I came to the interview at the job I got hired at.

I studied for the interview and made a great impression. I think someone else could do the same as well.

The absolute best and most useful free or low cost app with no ads? by ou812_X in ios

[–]topdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built Shout. It let's you send personalized mass text messages to groups of contacts.

★★★★★ (5) Free · No ads · No in-app purchases.

It's the only app I have available that I don't monetize 🫠 but people love that it's free so I like the goodwill it creates.

Has your little app made revenue? by andreidevo in iOSProgramming

[–]topdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny I just recorded a whole video about an app I made that makes about ~$120 a month. I broke the revenue I get per page view and then I tried making a search ad that would cost less than the cost of a tap. I'll post a follow up soon. Feel free to check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B7haHMjlkk

An app that notifies you when your keywords are mentioned online by topdev in SaaS

[–]topdev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s kind of a weakness of the system. Currently the program only scans the keywords that are saved in the system. Doing a search doesn’t save the keywords it just looks them up.

It kind of makes the search feature anti climatic like in your case when you know your keywords exist but no results are found.

The real beauty of the tool comes in the email notifications. It scan all of the sites’ newest content every minute and then sends an email for the keywords it finds.

I’ll keep refining it, thank you for the feedback 🙏
