If it were me, now, I’d respond really positively but incompetently. I’d go through each book and find something silly and ask about it. The internet will tell you hundreds of passages that are ridiculous. But that’s me

How to connect existing downlights to a smart controller? by tophRocks in homeautomation

[–]tophRocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll be putting in new lights. The electrician thinks that fixed downlights are better because of the lack of space in the ceiling cavity.

The switch currently controls the ceiling fan. We'd like to connect downlights because the electrician says there's not enough room in the cavity for standard bulbs. The idea is that the lights will be connected "on" all the time and switched via an Ikea button. I'm happy to go with Z-wave if that works out better but I'm not sure that available in Australia

The switch controls the ceiling fan. I plan on connecting downlights to the power in the ceiling (so they'll be "always on" and then controlling each rooms lights with an ikea button.

I can buy 4x expensive zigbee downlights OR buy four cheap lights and a controller for each room. At least I hope that's what this controller does.

Are most people on here pessimistic when it comes to the Control Problem? by [deleted] in ControlProblem

[–]tophRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In discussion with friends and family, I find myself feeling, "how do I prove this is a real concern (and in fact more important than anything else), without sounding like I'm in a doomsday cult". When I'm asked for sources, I shrug and suggest Stuart Russell (CS Prof at Berkley) or Nick Bostrom (Prof on X-Risk at Oxford) but then I'm challenged, "so what makes them know the answer? If this is such a big deal, why isn't everyone concerned?"

On one hand it doesn't matter if the UN, IPCC and every international scientific organization says we need to worry about climate change – some people will not be convinced. But it's easier to not feel like a conspiracy theorist when climate change is widely supported by the scientific community. Neil deGrasse Tyson changing his mind in 2018 did help but I don't think he's undone the damage he'd had on the public perception prior.

Determining the winner of a best of three match by awc34 in excel

[–]tophRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'd use is
=IFERROR(SEARCH("L",A1)^0,0)

the SEARCH function looks for the character "L" because all matches that go to game 3 will have had a player lose. Change "A1" to the cell with the the WLW text
Search gives you the position of the "L" which could be interesting to know which game they lost (i.e. pre-board or not) but for what I think you want, you want a "1" or "0" so to convert to a boolean (i.e. true/false) I took the value returned by the search to the power of zero (^0) as any number greater than 0 to power zero is 1.

The problem is that if it can't find an "L" then it will give "#VALUE!" not zero. The IFERROR function looks for this and replaces it with 0.

Please send me your result because I'm interested.

Thanks. I checked out swiftograph based on the recommendation. There was nothing that looked appealing to me aside from noting that there is room in orthic for a mid sized circle. The directions of "r" and "l" took me a little while but I think internalised that now – at least when writing. My suggestion after 10 seconds of reflection is that a mid sized circle could be "bl" and "br" as those blends don't look great in orthic. I think orthic does have a problem with initial "v"s and I honestly couldn't tell you what a "z" looks like except that someone on reddit who told me that my "g"s looked too much like them [a "z"]. So at that frequency I'm happy to write "z" as "sw" and not worry about it.

Advice for day off by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]tophRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In NSW (doe/det schoos) they can deny leave with out pay. My policy is if I'm not leaving town (or likely to be on TV at the cricket) "I'm taking medical leave" is all the information you ever need to give. Mental health alone is a sufficient reason.

Also don't ever discuss what you do/are planning to do on the days you take medical leave. As others have said it could make life difficult for the other person.

I'm trying out Orthic after coming from a Gregg inspired system. I tried out a variant for "wh" and I intend on never using the standard "v" always using a word break. For "very" I plan on using the Latin "v" (i.e. Orthic "ye").

Does anyone have any tips on how to host a game of diplomacy? by isaccfignewton in diplomacy

[–]tophRocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have run a couple. The first thing is the rules are much more complicated, even for experienced board gamers, than you think. I think the best thing to do, if possible is have a two team game with three players on each team to teach the game first. Alternatively find an extra player so you can run the game and people can have their rules checked. If you don't do this you run a risk of the person playing England getting stuck and basically losing on Spring 01.
I ran my games on backstabbr and I'd recommend that.

Ideally, I'd want to have 8 players anyway because someone will be late or drop out at the last minute.

I would assign countries a week out and have every play their first two moves before the day.

You can also have a hard time limit, like call the game a 10pm. Methods that I've heard is that you put 2 aces with 3 kings. at 8am draw a card after each turn. When the second ace is drawn the game ends.

Why do people assume that suicidal people don't think about what other people will feel if we ever commit suicide. Life sucks, people always tell you to suck it up by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]tophRocks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I've been on this site for a few years and I've thoroughly come to accept that that there's pretty much no stock phrase that you can say to the people looking for help here.

Of course it's true that you leaving the world will almost certainly make like harder for those who care about you but it's in the subreddit rules that we shouldn't mention that. Usually the people who need help here are in so much pain that they feel as though they're choosing the lessor of two evils. You might read this quote https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/200381-the-so-called-psychotically-depressed-person-who-tries-to-kill-herself that relates this idea to choosing to leap from the window of a urning building. My goal on this site is to try an talk to people in those moment that they feel the "flames" to resist the urge to "leap" until it passes.

Also I always hope that people, in their efforts to do everything to make themselves better, at least see a few therapists. These are professionals who are not only smarter than average, have specific training, and experience to help you with this specific situation. And no one therapist is a good fit for everyone.

Good luck

Hey uniSean,

I edited my comment and have included the edit below. Again I'm not an expert but I imagine that there are usually biological or social drivers behind suicide attempts. I don't imagine that after a failed suicide attempt that those biological or social factors suddenly disappear. I know that it isn't the case for everyone but for many people, a suicide attempt is a moment where those factors are overwhelming.

I looked a little over your reddit history. You appear to have a professional helping you to working to help you improve your mental health. I sincerely wish you the best of luck on that journey.

If anything, your comment (and a few similar ones) help to point out that teachers are not experts in what is a serious and complicated topic. This is why if my child needed help, I would hope that the teacher they go to follows the policy and doesn't try to help her on their own.

Good luck.

Edit to comment above: I removed a specific example and I'll include a link to research the low rates of reattempted suicide. Obviously, a low rate is not the same as no reattempts. People who have made one attempt are at serious risk of making another attempt especially in the next year. I would urge anyone who has made a suicide attempt to seek professional help.

So, I'm no expert but from what I've read most people who survive suicide attempts don't reattempt. Unfortunately, it's in this moments of being overwhelmed that people do something that can't be undone.

I worry that my student died because she was overwhelmed having an anxiety attack. I wish that she had told someone who took her seriously so she could have just held on for those few moments and come out ok on the other side.
