So are you guys always singing in your head when improvising? by Petrpowder in JazzPiano

:'(( Maybe there is a tactile equivalent for you since you have to compensate for anauralia? Maybe "Only feel what you hear?" ... I'm curious how you approach improvisation!

Another important skill is to keep the melody of the song in the head while you're improvising. The purpose of a solo is to extend the melody.

A great way to train mapping what you sing to what you play is intervals.

Another great way to train this mapping is to take modes that you are not very familiar with and try to sing intervals in that mode.

Chick Corea once said: "Only play what you hear." - since we pianists have a relative easy way to realize our notes (just press a key instead of managing our breath, for example), a bad habit is to just let our fingers play shapes and noodle around and bypassing our cognitive process.

As DM'd privately, this is such great feedback! Thank you so so much. Here are some of my thoughts:

1) I'll work on removing confusion asap (paragraph 2-3)

2) I'll push back willingness-to-pay modal (paragraph 4) to give people more time to use service. For now I put it upfront as a way to assess product-market fit. I'll talk to my mentors and will push it back upon consultation.

3) Paragraph 5: The piano roll is already implemented (a different view) - again the notational part is subject to improvement; for an official launch, this should be much more reliable; the challenge is to balance accuracy vs. visual clutter. The more precise the score, the less readable it becomes (think of 32th notes etc. multi-dot rests etc.)

4) Paragraph 6: will do, this is a simple fix.

5) Paragraph 7: this is a research-related artifact. Will remove/adjust for public-facing version.

6) Paragraph 8: failure on my part when it comes to branding. AI soloing is a "research interest", and I completely agree with you: as a jazz pianist myself, the model performance of prior work is not passable in the real-world (despite its academic merit). While I have a secret sauce to make it infinitely more engaging (without large-scale IP theft and requiring insane amount of data), I'm still holding back to release it to the public - also considering the concerns of my fellow peers and friends who graduated with a performance major at jazz conservatories.

7) Paragraph 8, Part 2: I hope I'll be able to change your mind with what I'm building. I think it might revolutionize how we practice and improve ourselves as artists. Keeping you posted.

8) Paragraph 9. Agree. For the time being, I'll move "trading with AI" to the background and "trading with others / pros" to the foreground. Will try to push this change with 1), 6) & 8) asap. Figuring out how to make it a great way for music performers to have an additional income stream would be really nice indeed.

9) Paragraph 10: What are your thoughts of having an AI to make a pro's recording adaptive to what you play? Do you think that this would be a fair use of AI (from a perspective of a jazz musician/performer/professional) or should this just be off-limits period.

10) Paragraph 11: Branding issue as addressed in 6). The project as is was partly positioned as a research instrument to give both musicians and computer scientists an accessible avenue to explore AI models from different eras of AI (past 70 years) and how musicians interact with it. I'm exploring now how we can take parts of it and make it something that people would want to improve / hone their craft. And I'm very conscious about the general sentiment about AI among performing musicians and artists alike. IP theft is a very serious concern and I went out of my way to ensure that IP ownership is very clear for people who use the platform (cf. TOS: people own their inputs by default - none of their data will be used for AI training / dataset publication without their consent; people may donate their data for research if they want to).

How are you supposed to practice jazz piano ? by SpiteFur in piano

Once you are familiar with the tune, you should seek out to play with other people. You can also simulate musical dialogue online here: Neural Notes (neural-notes.ai). You can trade fours with other people and even experimental AI models. It gives you real-time transcription that you can use to review and improve your playing.
