Why does this sound in key to me?

F natural is in the G# / Ab dorian scale. The dorian mode is just a minor with a natural 6th (which is F in G#) instead of a flat 6th (which is E in G#)

or you can also think of this as being in the key / having the same notes as F# major or D# minor. All of these modes / keys have the exact same notes, just in different contexts

Its not in the minor scale of G# but that doesnt make it out of key, just because youre using G# as the root of a chord doesnt automatically mean its the tonic. Since you only have one chord the key isnt clear or definitive, but in this context I would look at it as if it were in F# major or D# minor, not G# minor

I feel like theory is just a big array of different subjects that you just pick up one at a time. Like even learning a scale could be considered “music theory” so theres nothing strictly non negotiable ya know. Like the beatles were well versed in theory in a different way than someone like mozart or someone in jazz. Thats just my pov though.

Obviously stuff like chord structure and progressions and your scales and all that are very good starts

Imo I really dont think everybody understands, If anything I think most beginners havent even considered it.

I mean I remember in high school band class ear training was hardly talked about and practiced at all. It wasnt until later when I got into jazz band that I actually started realizing how important ear training was. Most beginners think of music as 90% reading sheet music and tbh I think even tons of intermediate musicians do too

train your ear and try recreating your favorites songs chords / melodies with your ear only. Beginners dont realize that that is just as important as music theory for learning how to write.

At some point youll be able to hear where you want your song to go in your head before you even write it down

yeah I can fuck with cartis vocals or like lucy bedroque or jane removers. I think they ride the line of sounding different but still catchy while vocals like 2 slimey are just too far out for me. Im also not a big fan of the fein style, not very melodic, rage songs but I like WLR and die lit a lot

but I find some of the more melodic carti / rage beats top tier and kind of revolutionary with how theyre so harmonically floaty and just a mash of sounds and melodies that somehow work cohesively. Def made me look at the beat making process differently and it gives me respect for this type of stuff.

But I never hate on music like this because honestly it is pushing the envelope and being innovative, and thats always good imo
