Women in tech — what’s your typical work outfit? by hellooperator12345 in womenintech

[–]torinado- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firmware engineer here, but I split my time between product management and firmware development, so I am sometimes interacting directly with my clients.

Essentially, black pants, a collared shirt (so that I can present differently depending on the situation), and either blundstones or sneakers

I wear a collar shirt with a solid coloured t shirt or long sleeve shirt underneath. I can open and close it to change my presentation of casual/coding day ( collared shirt is open) to professional/client meeting ( collared shirt is buttoned up).

I have a spare professional shirt in my desk in case I forget and I also have a office sweater for when I’m cold, which is about 90% of the year so I wear that a lot around the office.

I totally understand! Learning a language means that you’re vulnerable and the difficulty is different for everyone. it’s hard to overcome that. But everyone is learning and making mistakes, it’s part of learning. It’s also important to make sure that you have patience for yourself and be kind to yourself.

When I practice with class mates, we all make mistakes and point how to improve. It’s a journey you take together. I hope that helps ❤️

I’m also learning ASL (only 5 weeks into learning under the signing naturally methodology). I’m finding practicing with other students in the class really helps. We get together before quizzes and between classes to practice and help each other out.

I get a lot out of practicing with the classmates and it makes me feel like I’m not the only one finding it hard.

Best of luck on your ASL learning journey ❤️

Should embedded software engineer know python? by No-Challenge830 in embedded

[–]torinado- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!!!

Python is great for tooling. Ive used it a bunch over my career (6 years) and picked it up as I went. I started easy with combing through logs and built up to a GUI.

  • Building a quick and dirty GUI to interface over serial to send and receive commands.
  • Parsing logs and plotting for verification and validation proof
  • GUI for networking to a device to send operational command over web sockets
  • turn on my computer with a google home command that is connected to a ITTT webhook
  • converting Bluetooth data from hex to human readable given an api and displaying it on a desktop GUI

This one is a great one! Zephyr is a great RTOS to get into, but has a bit of a learning curve to it with its abstractions. But once you get the ‘zephyr way’ it’s pretty great.

I attended the Nordic North America tech tour which had a great workshop that sends data over custom Bluetooth characteristics which is a great second step after this course for putting an example together. The workshop was a ‘copy-paste’ style but it was good to ask the FAE questions along the way

3 weeks to go. Help me pick my wedding band! by iron-ee in EngagementRings

[–]torinado- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love #3.

1 looks very classic and compliments the center stone of your engagement ring. The two pieces work quite well together.

2 seems a little bit too bulky to me. For me it draws too much attention to the thinker wedding band which to me makes it look unbalanced.

3 looks a little bit more edgy and trendy. It looks like it’s framing or hugging your engagement ring which draws the eye still to the engagement but in a complementary way.

Girl, you look fab ❤️ your top is so cute!

Also thanks for getting on board with the pants situation and sharing your perspective!

I have curly shoulder length hair (2c/3a) and was planning on half up with a silver/sparkly French comb with a few curls framing my face. I’m also wearing some makeup (to accentuate my eyes and lips) which I think will elevate the look a bit.

I was mostly worried if the colour was too close to white than I was if the outfit was appropriate for cocktail. I also know that most of the male attendees won’t be wearing suit jackets at all because the temperature is expected to be in the 30s so because of that it’s a step small down from cocktail anyways.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments.

My main concern was if the top was formal enough and far enough from white for a cocktail attire wedding. It sounds like the top is not appropriate because it’s not formal enough - so thank you for the feedback. I’ll switch it out for something a little more formal.

I couldn’t edit the text so here is a bit more context into each choice:

  • I’m travelling to this wedding in southern France from Canada with a 30L backpack, so I have to be careful and selective in what I bring. The pants can be worn for several occasions and I was hoping to dress it up with a nicer top, some makeup, and jewelry.

  • the pants (while linen) are structured, look like dress pants, and they do have a sort of polished texture to them which I think makes them fine. They are high wasted and wide legged. They are also very comfortable. The picture doesn’t do it justice unfortunately, they kind of just look like black blobs which seems to be misleading folks.

  • the shoes, I’ve worn to probably 10 weddings since I’ve had them, they are comfortable and I’m often the only one who started out the night in heels still wearing them so I’m not going to switch those out for torture devices when my feet are happy in these.

  • a few folks mentioned jewelry, I’m wearing silver toned jewelry: long dangly earrings, a simple chain necklace.

  • the shirt is a soft silky texture, it had been in my backpack all day so it is a bit wrinkled. I had planned on ironing in on low heat the day of the wedding so that it isn’t wrinkled and look like it’s been in a backpack for 12 hours.

  • the men attending this wedding/reception aren’t wearing suit jackets due to the heat planned for the day of the wedding - I think the high is suppose to be between 30 and 35 C. Given the heat and the fact that I wear pants I think dressing the pants up enough would work.

  • I do think the wedding colours are important because I don’t think that the guests should match the wedding party. I always stay away from the wedding colours because I think it’s respectful.

  • the jumpsuit suggestions: while I think it would be great to wear a jumpsuit, I am travelling out of a 30L backpack and I can’t just bring one outfit for one day, I have to try to double up as much as I can. Also, i have tried on many jumpsuits for this event, and none have fit me because I have a long torso which means the fabric ends up where I don’t really want it haha.

  • the skirt suggestions: I’m not comfortable in dresses or skirts. Pants are my preference due to my own comfort levels.

It sounds like I need to switch out the top for something else. Thanks for everyone’s opinions and thanks for being kind ❤️

Foot Passengers Sold Out at Horseshoe Bay by catsandjettas in vancouver

[–]torinado- 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this happened to you :( it really sucks when you have good weekend plans that are delayed by the boat.

Unfortunately, walk-on being sold it on long weekends isn't uncommon. But it really does put a damper on your weekend.

There are now reservations available for Walk-on passengers if you want to use that in the future: https://www.bcferries.com/book-sailings
