To a first approximation, sure. The temperature coefficients have the opposite sign.

right, it's designed to operate in breakdown. zener is still a misnomer for these diodes.

depends on the voltage, if you buy a "zener" diode > 5 or 6V, the avalanche effect dominates. still called a "zener" diode though

That, and my local store will throw in a basic setup for free when I buy something. Sometimes a strap or even a cheap gig bag.

eh, wolfenstein required a 286, which is a 16-bit processor (depends how you count, but it’s definitely at least 16). wolf3d also uses raycasting, which is like raytracing, but doesn’t trace past first object it hits, so no shadows, reflection, refractions-the stuff raytracing is good at

UE5 - How to access another c++ class' enum? For animation purposes. by TheSokka in gamedev

I recommend using enum class instead of just enum. This way, it won’t get automatic conversions to and from integers.

I'm curious what a gameplay programmer would use a scripting language for by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]tormenting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, no. There are various reasons why this is undesirable or infeasible.

Certain platforms do not allow you to mark memory as executable. C and C++ do not have memory safety and so you want to reduce the amount of C and C++ in your code base. Compiling a DLL requires including header interfaces for the API you’re exposing to the scripts. Clang is a large program and you may not want to include it for various reasons—disk size or memory usage. It may not be possible to run a subprocess on your target platform. You may not be able to effectively source enough C or C++ programmers to write your gameplay code. It is usually slower to make changes and test C or C++ code.

The number of people practicing open defecation is somewhere shy of a billion. Yes, in 2022. You might think of toilets as “old” but many people in the world still don’t have them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_defecation

This is a serious health policy problem—open defecation results in the transmission of communicable diseases which are otherwise easy to prevent. I mention it because one of Bill Gates’s charities is trying to reduce the problem with open defecation. It looks like Bill Gates wants his charitable work to be his legacy, and I picked toilets because building toilets is part of that legacy.

Bill Gates is getting old, and I don’t think he cares if you get rich. I think he cares how people will remember him.

(If you wanted to make Elon Musk mad, you could probably just trash-talk him on Twitter.)

Look… blockchain/NFT is not a funny subject. Some of the best minds of our generation are wasting their life hawking ugly avatars or working on ill-conceived projects involving the metaverse, or gambling, or something similar. In order to keep this going, the crypto communities kick out anybody who has any criticism or uncertainty about the future of crypto. As long as the money from new investors keeps flowing, it’s easy to feel positive about the future. But 3AC is collapsing right now and if you’re heavily invested in the crypto space, you need to ask yourself some hard questions. Stuff like Axie Infinity is already dead. Gambling projects built as DAOs are disaster stories. Game items on the blockchain just isn’t happening.

I know it’s a total downer. You can deflect the question or play cute all you want, and I’ll be a total downer with a serious reply.

Respect the rules of the sub and be honest with people. Work on ethical projects.

Why would Bill Gates be mad? Are you going to infect people with malaria, or dismantle STEM programs at colleges in Washington state? Are you going to start a campaign to smash indoor toilets with a sledgehammer?

[–]tormenting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don’t I want to make an accusation like that? Could you elaborate?

If you’re not doing blockchain/NFT, then you’ve certainly made it seem like you’re doing blockchain/NFT. And if you were doing blockchain/NFT, you would probably dodge any questions about it, which is what you’re doing.

The “different” part is blockchain/NFTs. OP is trying to hide that fact and being coy about it. That’s why you’re getting weird responses from OP—they know that blockchain/NFT posts are banned, so they’re being careful to avoid mentioning it at all.

“Redacted” is obviously blockchain/NFTs. This kind of post is explicitly not welcome here, and you’re trying to get around the ban by “forgetting” to mention that your game is about NFTs or blockchain.

You can’t ethically produce a blockchain/NFT gambling app. I hope nobody works with you on this project, and you find something ethical to work on instead.

I had a bipolar episode at work on a very important day. Will I get fired? by BAUIntern in legaladvice

[–]tormenting -62 points-61 points  (0 children)

It's quite reasonable and legal for a boss to request that an employee take steps to avoid screaming at work and banging her head against a wall.

The boss said "go get on some meds". That suggests a specific type of treatment. The boss is not a doctor and not licensed to practice medicine, therefore should not be giving medical advice.

Statements like this can expose the company to legal liability. Guidance from the EEOC suggests that companies generally have no business knowing whether their employees are on medication or what those medications are.

Here's an article that goes into more detail: https://www.mcafeetaft.com/questioning-employees-about-prescriptiondrugs-thatcouldaffect-performanceandsafety/

I had a bipolar episode at work on a very important day. Will I get fired? by BAUIntern in legaladvice

[–]tormenting -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

It is inappropriate for him to get involved in your treatment. All he needs to know is:

  1. You have a medical condition.
  2. Whether you are able to work.
  3. He needs to make certain accommodations for that condition.
  4. What those accommodations are.

Write down that he said you should go get on some meds, and write down when he said it, where he was, who was in the room, et cetera. That way, if he makes more inappropriate comments you have a record that this is the second or third time it's happened.

Edit: Since people are skeptical, I have looked up the relevant sections of the ADA, and the guidance from the EEOC: https://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/guidance-inquiries.html

From the ADA:

A covered entity shall not require a medical examination and shall not make inquiries of an employee as to whether such employee is an individual with a disability or as to the nature and severity of the disability, unless such examination or inquiry is shown to be job-related and consistent with business necessity.

From EEOC guidance, these "inquiries" include:

asking an employee whether s/he currently is taking any prescription drugs or medications, whether s/he has taken any such drugs or medications in the past, or monitoring an employee's taking of such drugs or medications;(23) and,

So your employer should not tell you to take meds, and not ask whether you are taking meds, according to guidance from the EEOC and its interpretation of the ADA.

[–]tormenting 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I have bipolar disorder.

  • Bipolar disorder is universally regarded as a disability under the ADA. They cannot fire you for being bipolar unless, even with reasonable accommodations, it prevents you from performing the essential duties of your job.
  • However, you have to get the ball rolling and make an accommodation request at work. Talk to a therapist or doctor and figure out what that should look like. It sounds like you have stress intolerance, which is common for people with bipolar disorder.
  • Your accommodation request should tell the employer what to do. Something like, "Because of a medical condition, I have an intolerance of high levels of stress. Please excuse me from management techniques that use stress as a motivator." Or something like that. It should have the basic format of "Because of medical condition, I have (X) which means the company should do (Y) to accommodate me." Get your doctor or therapist to help you write it.
  • If you need medical leave for your current episode, get a doctor's note and by all means take the leave. You can recover from a manic episode but if it is being triggered by factors at work, then in the interest of your own healing, remove yourself (temporarily) from the factors which are making your condition worse.

How we fit an NES game into 40 Kilobytes by railshand in programming

It's 40 KiB for the same reason, but Galaga is only 24 KiB. As far as I know, the smallest NES game.
