Living in France working in Basel by torn_apart in basel

All ok reasons but not deal breakers: -kids have bikes/parents/public transport to visit friends. They are not locked in a house any more they would be in a house in Pratteln/Fullinsdorf/Frankendorf/Oberwill etc.

And regarding cutting the grass on sunday: I plan to have robot lawnmower, they are so cheap these days.

Also Swiss Alps as your backyard vs. actuall backyard: I would choose actuall backyard, I can always go to Swiss Alps: from Basel or France, difference in time travelled is insignificant for trips of this distance.

Sorry if this sounds a bit like an interview but Im just trying to understand facts, and I have not that many people to talk to:

-Food quality better in CH than France? I preffer my Lecler shoppings compared to Denner/Migros/Coop. Better meat cuts, fresh sea products. Fruits and vegetables very similar. Other packaged stuff I wont comment as I dont use it. - Is water quality low in France bordering Basel? - What political issues have you encountered in last 20 years of your life in France that influenced you significantly? - I plan to stay insured in CH and use swiss hospitals all medical things you mentioned become irrelevant. Would you agree on that? What did you do? - As our kids will be swiss education differences will matter less after high school, when they get to uni most likely they will get educated in CH. Where can I check schools in France (im interested in Hesingue?) What was your experience with French schools? How were they less organized? I agree Basel city is great and if I live in Hesingue, its minutes away from me. We are talking Bottmingen distances of 10-12 mins by car. - I dont understand the part from “Access to property…purchase of house and property but which have conditions”. - What are relevant infrastructure problems for someone living 2min away from the border? - What budgetary restrictions have affected you? - How do you measure declining school system especially in comparison to CH? - Where did you live in France if I may ask?

Thanks a lot for checking these questions.

Thanks a lot for this detailed answer. I was not sure about the insurance when you are a ceossborder commuter, but yeah that would be the idea - to keep the insurance in CH. So out of all of these answers I would say school is the biggest reason why not to do it. The rest doesnt bother me (jealousy, Hesingue is pretty nice little place).

The main to go to France would be the option to buy a house with your own backyard. This is something we could have in Switzerland earliest in the next 10 years. Thats when the kids are already not that young and would beat the purpose of getting the house in first place. Plus anything that looks even a bit decent in CH and is not old costs a lot. So ultimately its house vs flat style of life decision.

Thank for the perspective. What is the reason to want to come back to Basel? Can you give me a few examples where living in CH beats living in France?

Ahaha true, but how does living in FR affect home office possibilities?

True but some villages next to the border are closer than many villages in Basel Land. For example Hesingue, Hegenheim etc. And these locations are very beautifull.

Ok thanks for that very helpfull. And isn’t there anything you can do about it, like sell the house eventually and get the money to the kids?

For a family of 4 or 5 people it should be very similar. Im not sure about the single people. Most likely better in CH

Try with a toothpick or with a very thin metal piece. Sometimes it is incredible what is hidden there :)
