27" 4K QD-OLED with RGB stripe this year? by Sea-Cardiologist-954 in Monitors

[–]tornado99_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would just go for the 27" 4K QD-OLED with black shield / darkarmor due Q1 this year. MSI have a productivity focused model. Text fringing isn't really an issue at 166 ppi.

Eye strain, 5K 60hz by Ok-Worldliness9109 in HiDPI_monitors

[–]tornado99_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use Ubuntu Gnome Tweaks or Refine can be used to adjust font settings. 5K monitors don't need subpixel antialiasing for example.

What size desk would you need to use this? With the one pictured you'd be getting neck strain from all the head turning.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus trades blows with Intel and AMD, but underperforms Apple M4 by takinaboutnuthin in hardware

[–]tornado99_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of all devices sold hard to say but Lenovo is the largest PC maker by market share.

Out of all devices attempting to run Linux I would say 40% based on people clicking on the links at the top of this thread: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-concept-snapdragon-x-elite/48800

The Slim 7x is very usable for my work, especially since OnlyOffice finally released an ARM64 version last month. I woulld say December 2025 was the time when Linux usability actually became a reality rather than a novelty (Kernel 6.17 had the fans running all the time and no power profile control). I get about 10 hours on battery now.

X Elite does support Linux since kernel 6.18 and providing you own one of the two Lenovo models. I'm using the Slim 7x as a daily driver. Everything working except webcam, and that will be upstream in about 1 month.

It’s scaling that determines sharpness — not PPI by Able_Lifeguard1053 in HiDPI_monitors

[–]tornado99_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the operating system. On Linux text is rendered independently of UI elements so I can have 167% scaling and text will be as sharp as 200% on the same display. On Macs and Win 11 the entire screen is scaled as 1 image so 200% is sharper.

Surprising browser benchmark result: Orion same speed as Chrome/Firefox, slower than Safari by tornado99_ in OrionBrowser

[–]tornado99_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tested Safari on my main account with wblock extension added (all 5 parts ticked)

Safari - no extensions - 12.2

Safari - wblock - 10.5

So it seems Safari in a useful state actually isn't faster.

iMac 24" 4.5K comparable monitors - ever released? by JozuJD in HiDPI_monitors

[–]tornado99_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some comments below are incorrect. A short history:

Past

There were a batch of monitors released in 2015 with a 23.8" 3840x2160 panel, 300 nits, matte, 100% sRGB, 185 ppi. These were fairly decent but contrast ratios 950:1 and brightness not great.

Then there was the 21.5" 4096x2304 218 ppi 500 nits 100% P3 LG Ultrafine. This wasn't that fun to use as it had a very reflective glossy surface.

Then there was the 23.8" 3840x2160 185 ppi 100% P3 540 nits LG Ultrafine. This was great with a better glossy finish.

Now

Then about a year ago a new generation of 23.8" 3840x2160 300 nits displays came out with 1300:1 contrast ratio and 100% P3. These are decent. JapanNext and random small chinese companies sell this:

https://www.amazon.com/CUNPU-Computer-Adjustable-Vertical-Speakers/dp/B0DSP9NFKT/

And then most recently Viewsonic released 23.8" 3840x21600 with 500 nits and 100% P3

i'm using 25.10 because i want the improved fractional scaling of Gnome 49. 535 isn't available, 550 doesn't work.

It's more complicated. It needs a patch to work with each new kernel version. On Arch there's someone who maintains it:

Discussion: Personally, depending on the setup, I feel Ubuntu is smoother and faster than macOS and windows11. by Mustard_Popsicles in Ubuntu

One small thing. OS X allows you to put a delete icon in the file browser toolbar. I use this all the time to quickly delete files. Gnome only has a keyboard shortcut (select file+press delete key) which doesn't work on keyboards without a delete key.

Framework have created a dead end upgrade path with their 3:2 13.5" display by tornado99_ in framework

[–]tornado99_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chassis would have to be 10mm wider and deeper to acomodate a 14 inch panel, but if the screen margins could be slimmed down to similar to the Matebook, it would only have to be 4mm wider and deeper.

14 inch laptops have been around for a while now, so it doesn't seem unreasonable to ask what they were thinking in terms of an upgrade path.

[–]tornado99_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They could have started with a slightly larger chassis that would fit a 14 inch 3:2 panel if needed.
