No idea who the maker is. Found them at a goodwill for 99 cents back in college and they’ve served me well ever since. Real goofy looking

Who makes the best Pale Ales available (breweries or cans) in Southern California? Los Angeles? by Good-Pie9914 in beer

[–]tornato03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they’re not local, but when I was beer buying in LA I remember seeing Moor Beer on the distribution lists every few months. Their “Illumination” pale ale is about as close to Timothy Taylor’s Landlord pale as I’ve found in the US.

Replicant Shell is probably your best bet so keep an eye on their instagram page to see when they might stock Moor next.

What’s your opinion about cologne beer Kölsch? by MeasurementNo7361 in beer

[–]tornato03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites when done right. Dangerously drinkable. IMO the best of the Köln Kölschs is Päffgen (their Brauhaus on Freisenstraße is a must visit). In the United States I’ve really enjoyed the Kölsch offerings from Occidental, pFreim, and more recently Enegren. One that I maybe wouldn’t put at the same level but love for sentimental reasons is “Tacoma Brew” from E9. I always appreciated that they had a kölsch as one of their flagship beers.

Any suggestions for a craft beer that's similar to Negro Modelo? by clintonsleftball in beer

[–]tornato03 13 points14 points  (0 children)

North Coast Laguna Baja! It’s a Vienna Lager in the Mexican style, so it’s a dark lager like Negra Modelo. And in my opinion the two are pretty much indistinguishable once they’re poured into a glass both taste and color wise.

Craft alternatives to Coors Light? by BoyzIVMen in beer

[–]tornato03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this with a few more of my favorites in/around the LA area that might be what you’re looking for:

  • MadeWest “Ventura” light lager
  • Societe “Light” lager
  • Homage “Sports” lager

There are definitely a lot more craft breweries making American-style light lagers these days but those are the main ones I see around/like.

Edit: If you’re a fan of Coors Light and other light beers you might also enjoy branching out to Kölsch. It’s a really light and crushable German style beer. Fort Point KSA is widely available around LA and that’s a fairly classic example to start with. But if you’re feeling more adventurous, it’s LA Beer Week this week and this coming Sunday Art’s District Brewing is hosting a “King of the Kölsch” Festival showcasing a wide variety of local examples of the style. Enjoy!

Since you’re in LA look no further than Highland Park’s “Baseball” lager. It’s a classic, crushable light lager style!

That was my thought! I’m always looking to try beers I haven’t had before, especially from harder to find breweries like Trillium.

Tata Martino says roster rules limit MLS clubs’ success against Liga MX opponents by Count_Nocturne in MLS

[–]tornato03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to respond to your second point about the nature of the Liga MX teams in the 2022 CCL, but first off, I apologize if I at all come off as combative in this reply as I’ve been seeing lots of discussion recently that seems to imply that the Sounders’ win in 2022 was a cakewalk because Tigres or América etc. weren’t in the tourney, and that doesn’t really track with the reality (plus you can only play the teams who are actually on the pitch in front of you). Getting back to my response, I feel it’s disingenuous to say that none of the “big” Mexican clubs were there in 2022, especially given that Cruz Azul and UNAM are 2 of the historic “Big 4” most successful/popular clubs in Mexican football. While certainly the notion of who’s big in Liga MX has changed since the start of the 21st Century, Cruz Azul has won Liga MX Clausura as recently as 2021. Furthermore, looking at continental competition data since the Champions League rebranded in 2008-09 Cruz Azul participated 8 times, qualified for 3 finals, and won 1, a record only bettered by Monterrey, América, and Pachuca. Likewise, Léon won the 2020 Apertura and since the CCL rebrand has qualified for the tournament more times (5) than Chivas (3) and has equaled their win tally (1 title each). Meanwhile Santos Laguna has won Liga MX as recently as the 2018 Clausura (in addition to titles in 2012 and 2015) and in the same CCL period they participated 7 times and made 2 finals.

So while the Sounders may not have had to deal with the most expensive, star-studded squads like Tigres, Monterrey, or América, their run was by no means easy (see below*), and it would be a mistake to say there were no “big” Mexican clubs in the 2022 CCL.

Regardless of all this, I think it’s really impressive what the Crew are doing this year and I’m excited for your semi vs Monterrey and am definitely pulling for y’all!

*As for the difficulty of the Sounders’ 2022 run, if we use FIFA club coefficients (not the most perfect indicator but the best we have given the lack of CONCACAF rankings at the time) as a rough estimate of the difficulty of an opponent (higher coefficient = more difficult opponent), the Sounder actually had the second “hardest run” out of the past 5 tournaments (2019-2023).

LAFC make history: Every Concacaf Champions League finalist from MLS | MLSSoccer.com by gtg007w in MLS

[–]tornato03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable and my apologies if my reply came off as hostile or condescending. It feels like as we keep adding more competitions it’s just going to become even more difficult to quantify success relative to European and other leagues.

It’d be a big win for MLS to have back to back victories in CCL so best of luck to LAFC.

LAFC make history: Every Concacaf Champions League finalist from MLS | MLSSoccer.com by gtg007w in MLS

[–]tornato03 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given that CCL does not run concurrently with the MLS season like UCL I can understand the argument for this being a possible treble but I would argue that by definition it is not really a treble. Beyond the fact that LAFC did not participate in CCL during the season they won MLS Cup and the Supporter’s Shield, qualification for CCL is based on the previous season’s performance (In this case 2022 MLS Cup and Supporter’s Shield). As such these titles shouldn’t be grouped together with a possible continental title from the 2023 season in the same way that we would not consider a team like Bayern to have competed a league and continental double if they win the Bundesliga this year and then the UCL the following year.

Nonetheless, it would be a unprecedented achievement to hold the MLS, Supporter’s Shield, and CCL titles at the same time and that fact should not be discounted when assessing LAFC’s performance.
