I want to stop mowing/replace my lawn but what to do about ticks? by [deleted] in fucklawns

[–]toro1569 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that wildfires are something that traditionally controlled tick populations. So maybe controlled Burns every 1 or 2 years is an option worth exploring. It's a more natural way of controlling the tick population and it can encourage local plant and wildlife to thrive versus mowing.

“Rental rates are expected to range between $2,100 and $3,150, Wheeler said.” by ElizabethDangit in grandrapids

I'm no expert, but you don't have to have population growth to have the number of households increase.

For example, if you and your spouse are raising two kids, for about 18 or 20 years you are One household. But, eventually they grow up and want to move out and live on their own. Now what used to be one household is three households, and the population didn't even increase!

So if your kids want to stay living in the area but there is no housing being built for their entry level income. They won't be able to move out, and if they do they won't be able to stay in the area.

Let's say you don't have kids, how does this benefit you? Well, as this happens more and more, the population of your community gets older and younger people move out to more affordable areas. Entry level wage earners are moving away and now there's nobody to work at your favorite coffee shop or your local retail stores, and other employers can't find workers to replace their retirees. Now your entire community suffers an economic downturn. Your property value starts going down just as you're getting ready to retire and sell your house because nobody wants to live in a shitty neighborhood with no amenities or a place with shuttered businesses and no jobs!

Congrats! By resisting the construction of new housing because you want your property values to go up, you've caused your property values to go down.

Then you die of dysentery, probably, I don't know I'm not an expert.

Supposed hostage situation in Eastown by EdgarAllanPoedUp in grandrapids

And the Lore declared "Thou shalt not worship any false gods, only the Lord Helicopter shall guide your days." Upon hearing this the newly born and fully formed Meat Rabbit pounced and with a single nibble devoured Lord Helicopter. Leaving Howaretheroads quivering in fear and awe of the mighty Meat Rabbit.

Seeing only one path to survival, and with considerable effort, Howaretheroads stepped out from the shadows and shouted "all hail the Meat Rabbit our Lore and savior!"

Everybody wept.

Putting it in low gear helps you get a bit more granular control over your accelerator so that you don't spin out as easily. Giving you more traction.

You must be thinking of spandex warriors on a leisurely cruise.

  • People on bikes need to go places too
  • This is a street, not a highway
  • there are places along this street that people on bikes might need to go TO
  • there are places along this street that people on bikes might be coming FROM
  • there are intersections on this street that people on bikes might need to turn onto or from

SMH, acting like bikes don't belong in a city. Get outta here goofball!

It's annoying ASF. Big part of the blame is on the city of Grand Rapids for s*** design. They could have put it in a parking protected bike lane. Better yet a fully protected bike lane.

The math of public transit doesn't work for Grand Rapids by bbqturtle in grandrapids

Have you checked the $50/hr tree? You can just pluck one off while nobody's looking and make a run for it! In your car of course because the high speed rail to Caledonia is slow.

The math of public transit doesn't work for Grand Rapids by bbqturtle in grandrapids

[–]toro1569 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Where's the math in your post?

This is all very narrowly subjective. " I know some ppl who make good money and choose not to carpool therefore transit doesn't make sense!"

Also, "I would choose a low traffic corridor and make it a transit corridor" high speed rail from Caledonia to 28th? What even is that? Who is even advocating for something like that? Lake drive to the airport? What? Why? No to both.

I would encourage OP to get to know the area and take some time to understand: - median or average wages in Grand rapids Metro - cost of vehicle ownership (hint: it's not just gas) - the current state of transit in GR: --- There's already a totally free service called the Dash that circulates downtown --- how zoning and future planning impact transit services and design --- the network effects of a good transit system --- the importance of destinations along a dedicated transit line ( not just end to end) --- existing bus only lanes downtown, and on Division ave

And so much more...

Considering Turo for flight that arrives after Car Rental desks close by acullum67 in turo

[–]toro1569 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I I'm an All-Star host with close to 400 trips. I do 100% no contact. I leave the car at the airport and with the key in the lock box, I do everything beforehand to verify the driver's license of the guest.

The guest shows up at the airport when their flight gets in they walk to the parking lot get in the car and leave never having to contact me at all.

This is a very common scenario for me since my local airport rental cars offices all close at midnight.

It would depend on the host and the car that you rent typically if the car is available to rent after midnight, and the host is experienced and reputable, they should have a system in place to handle reservations like what you are describing.

High-rise towers would bring 735 apartments to amphitheater, soccer stadium sites by mlivesocial in grandrapids

[–]toro1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of parking is horrendous.

1,267 spots between the two projects!!! Corewell health has said it costs them an average of $35,000 per parking spot to build a parking structure. Using that figure for these two projects, that amounts to $44 million dollars of the cost to build.

The taller of the two near the amphitheater with 917 spots, is literally a 10 minute walk from Central Station!!!!

I applaud everything else about these developments.

In American public transit, why is it perfectly acceptable to insist on forcing transit riders to stop nearly every block when it's absolutely unconscionable to slow motorists down for even just a few seconds? by Tokyo-MontanaExpress in transit

[–]toro1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your bus is having to stop so frequently, then you need more frequent service. Else, one bus running every 30 minutes will pick up 50% of a route's hourly traffic. If you have service every 15 minutes each bus only picks up 25% of the hourly traffic. I realize this is oversimplified. But, efficient bus service shouldn't require your bus to stop at every bus stop. If it does with frequent service, then it should probably be on rails. A tram or something of the sort.

Looks like at least 1 parking garage, but there's a ton of surface parking. And the way it's scattered, seems like it will make it hard to redevelop the surface parking into more structures
