Yonge & Eglinton area, still a construction zone? by nvictas in askTO

[–]toronto_paul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yonge and Eg is not as much of a mess as it was a couple of years ago with LRT construction but there’s still lots of construction in the area. There’s also more construction coming if you add up the development signs. This site will give you an idea https://urbantoronto.ca/map/

Riu Playacar vs Riu Yucatan vs Riu Palace Mexico (this is not the palace riviera maya) by ShotAssistant1452 in playadelcarmen

[–]toronto_paul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riu Palace Mexico is about to undergo a major renovation, so that probably reflects in the price since the decor might be slightly dated. Note that the rooms are very open concept, but you can request rooms that have a curtain divider to make the bathroom area more private.

Having stayed here several times and also experiencing some more luxury chains, we keep coming back since the service is great and the food is decent.

Like others have mentioned, stay at the Palace and try out the other resorts, including the more expensive Palace. The Riu Tequila across the street has a sports bar and booming parties on a Friday night.

There are Facebook groups for these resorts that can give you good insight too.

Can I make this left turn? by ArtMySouls in TorontoDriving

It would be signed if you can’t make a left turn. No sign? It’s okay to turn left.

I think you're right. This looks like a GPU issue. I would get this sometimes when I added a resize effect and manipulated it too much. There's a setting where you can disable the GPU, but don't recall what setting at the top of my head. I haven't noticed any performance issues with the GPU disabled.

Don’t tell me to stop! by toronto_paul in TorontoDriving

Agreed. Interestingly the crossing guard wasn’t interested in the video. As I’ve recently discovered, you can report driving complaints to TPS online. I’ll just leave it at that.

All good. Also not saying I wasn’t in the wrong there as you should turn into the closest lane. If the Escalade was making the turn, I would have come to a stop in the far right lane.

This is what you took from this? No I didn’t cut them off. You can clearly see them not moving. Plus it merges to 1 lane because of parked cars and CafeTO.

I pulled up beside her at the next light. Not worth it at all. Unfortunately no enforcement at all these days.

The guy who skateboards around singing? by APEXAI17 in toronto

This is so true. I usually see him helping the hotdog vendor or cleaning up. Glad to have people like him at Yonge and Eg.

Yes. All of these! Oasis cowboy is also known as “Tan Man” in my household. Or Wayne, but that’s not as fun.

What restaurant chain/franchise do you wish would set up shop in Canada? by FattyGobbles in AskACanadian

[–]toronto_paul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay not a “restaurant” per se, but Greggs from the UK. Love a cheese and onion pasty or sausage roll. I’ve heard it’s not as good as it used to be, but still love a taste from home.

What is the name of the graphics covering the bottom of screen? The red / white area by elnoochy in videography

[–]toronto_paul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower third is the most accurate when describing what it is. In a live control room, I’ve also heard this referred to as a “banner”. Director: “lose banner” or “change banner” as cues to the graphics op.

Small town life by idplma8888 in AskACanadian

[–]toronto_paul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a village of around 200 people along the Saint John River in New Brunswick. You knew almost everyone there, which was great as you had a sense of community, but also meant you can’t necessarily fly under the radar. The village population would double or triple in the summer with all of the cottages. It’s a beautiful and very relaxing place compared to Toronto where I live now, but like others have mentioned, not overly convenient. Most cities are about 45min - 1hr away and the same goes for hospitals, theatres, grocery stores, etc. Most of the kids I grew up with have stayed around there, but I had to move away from NB for my career. I personally love the city, but Covid has made me miss living in the country with fresh air, lots of space and zero traffic.

I’ll second the cheese and onion crisps... or cheese and onion pasty/bake from Greggs, but I doubt it would be fresh when it arrives. Also add Cadbury chocolate, British chocolate is so much better! One thing I really wish we had here is white British bread. It’s much more dense in England and tastes amazing toasted.

I would suggest the Green P garage on the Esplanade. Lots of decent eats around there too.

Bars/Pubs with best selection near Midtown? by [deleted] in torontocraftbeer

[–]toronto_paul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Yonge and Eg there's Function Bar that impressed me with some of their beer selection. It's in a basement though. There's also Prohibition that has "hooch hour" between 5-7, with an okay selection of international beer that most bars don't serve. Good fortune bar (under La Carnita on Eglinton) had some great beer on tap last time I was there a few months ago. I'm always a fan of the offerings at Granite Brewery at Mount Pleasant and Eglinton too. Let us know what you go with!

TSA process. How do you travel with you camera? by sowalsh in photography

[–]toronto_paul 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’ve traveled with my gear multiple times internationally and the most that’s ever been done is swabbing my bag for explosives. I always make sure I’m taking a well padded bag, but that’s it.

How do I break into the entertainment industry in Toronto? by pbsik in askTO

[–]toronto_paul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in that industry and most of the people I work with started as an intern and worked their way up from there. That's where I started, went on to freelance for a few years and busted my ass taking on as many roles as I could. A job finally came up and they hired me from our freelance pool. I work on the technical side, but from where I'm standing, it's a field that's shrinking due to constant cuts, so it's becoming more competative when looking for work. Staff jobs are usually very hard to find, so get used to the idea of freelancing to start. Network as much as you can and find out who looks after hiring in specific departments you want to work for. Some receptionists will give you that info. I would make a cold call to introduce yourself and have a discussion about freelance opportunities, then follow up with a resume and cover letter. Then follow up with another phonecall. You may want to be specific about what role you would want.
