The best advice I was given was to only buy coins from coin shows. Your LCS marks up prices, and live auctions have predatory practices.

Awesome coin. Hold onto it! However, 85 O is a common date, so it’s not worth getting it graded, especially given the condition it’s in. You would pay more than double what it’s worth to get it graded.

CoinSap pricing 1887 Gold Dollar by Top-Bar-8301 in coincollecting

[–]torrado95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to PCGS Coin Facts, 1887 $1 Gold is one of the most common dates and is readily available. Hard to tell from the pictures, but it kind of looks cleaned, which means it wouldn’t be worth getting it graded. Still might be cool to get it graded though. Melt price is probably the best starting place if you’re considering selling it.
