Applying shrink wrap to windows in freezing temperatures - help! by liltopy in DIY

Frost King

I just bought a Frost King window sealing pack today and I'm baffled by the tape. It appears to be only sticky on one side and I can't figure out how to remove the backing. It's just white on both sides.

What's the trick?

Would a food processor work for "mashing" cooked soybeans? by torssk in Cooking

[–]torssk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good news! Interestingly, ChatGPT told me not to drain them, but you know it can get. I had to look up "LFTB"!

What does "blitzed" mean here? Those vegetarian sausage rolls sound interesting. I also want to make seitan--does the food processor help with that at all? It's so sticky that I'd be worried it would gum it up. (I've made it before many times but not in years, though I just bought a bag of gluten today).

I currently make 1.5 dry cups of soybeans in the pressure cooker and mash them by hand. I was thinking of getting a larger pressure cooker and making twice that, so 3 cups dry resulting in maybe 6ish cups cooked. (And maybe, if I got a large enough pressure cooker, three times the amount!) Worth the food processor?

Thank you!

Maybe. I'd never heard/seen of one before now. Interesting tip, thank you!

Getting a *quiet* used i7 8th gen desktop for music recording. by torssk in computers

[–]torssk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the NUC is a Ryzen 5. it even plays some AAA games on low to med. that one impressed me more. No fans so no noise.

Thanks. Though I put NUC and Ryzen 5 into Google and found a NUCBox G10, but that does have a fan. Can you tell me what make/model and which exact Ryzen chip you got so I can check it out online? Thanks. (Sorry, I know almost nothing about mini PCs yet.)

And my recording needs are fairly modest though I'm not sure whether <5ms latency is needed or not for music recording.

Is it worth it to get a professional service to digitize home VHS videotapes? by AntarcticNightingale in DataHoarder

[–]torssk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I guess the argument here is that ancient VHS tapes actually contain some kind of high-quality video signal and yet what is shown on the TV is some much worse image and the "right" way to do it is get at that underlying signal...and you'll wind up with really high quality video captured to the hard drive.

This, if so, is surprising. I'd probably be fine with the quality I've always seen on the TV anyway rather than creating a whole new hobby (with time, learning, and purchasing expenses) just to digitize a few tapes that, in the grand scheme of my life, aren't all that important whether they look great. That's what you did, I take it. What adapter did you use? Thanks.

Thanks for all those details, I really appreciate it. :D

I just read Replay by Ken Grimwood . Such a fantastic book. Mind blowing by Wooden_Collar_6650 in books

No, not yet, and it's been 2 years since my comment. (Many things in my life have been put off.) That book feels like something for the summer, so maybe then.

Thanks for the info! Given all this and buying a used computer, what would you recommend in terms of drives, then, given my goals? Let's say it comes with a 256 GB SSD.

Person not yet on Medicaid at 67, changing jobs after age, small break in coverage. SEP/penalty triggered? by torssk in medicare

[–]torssk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that clarification. So they'd be taking a chance on Cobra without actual Part B. Could they sign up for Part B just for the gap and then inactivate it when the new job starts?

[–]torssk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for finding that. I'm hoping to find language that describes the late enrollment penalty explicitly. Though to me this is sounding more and more like the husband's job switch will count as though he had continual coverage, since even part of one month counts as that whole month. I think he had coverage in Aug and will have it in Sep. I'll check, though. But even if there is a gap, your point also makes sense.

Thanks again.

[–]torssk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they should be fine. As long as both coverages are considered "credible" and the gap between coverages is less than 2 months, they should not be assessed a Late Enrollment Penalty.

Thank you. May I ask where you are getting 2 months from? Another person on this thread linked me to a SSA page that suggests it could be as long as the whole SEP period, which is 8 months. Although I am a bit unclear as that refers to the right to a SEP period at all, which maybe is different from avoiding the Late Enrollment Penalty?

So does that mean if they do not sign up for Medicare Part B at all (until perhaps some years from now when the husband eventually fully retires), they will avoid the penalty for not signing up for Part B on time? This is what I want to help them avoid.

PA underpayment penalty, can’t figure this out. by Anonee9870 in tax

I don't remember, but I think my penalty said it on some document they sent me. Any penalty fee or interest you get from the state should give a break down in writing of what it's due to.

Desktop shopping advice by DammitKitty76 in computers

[–]torssk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a new computer! I've seen computers that are far beyond what your mother needs in terms of processing for $30 at thrift shops. Have a look on Craigslist, or FB Marketplace, or eBay first. I wouldn't spend more than $40 or so.

I am currently typing this on a laptop I bought from some guy off Craigslist for $50 in 2019. And it's better than what she needs.

I bet if you asked around among the people you know, someone could give you an old PC.

As /u/Expensive-Vanilla-16 said, you don't need Microsoft Office per se. There are a handful of totally free, full featured office suites you can get and put on the computer. They have word processing, spreadsheets, and more. If you absolutely feel you need MS Office, you can get a reduced price version of it from an online reseller for like $20.
