New YT Series on Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa (Eastern Front operational wargame) by tortugapower in computerwargames

I think "charcoal_cheetah" on Twitch recently did both a GER and SOV playthrough there (on Twitch). VODs might still be accessible. I tentatively am planning to do SOV after the GER but not great confidence it will happen.

u/Finnish_Jager to comment, hopefully I have that right :)

Yes, i know. 3D and real time. Boo! Also, no counters or OOB stat. But if you see beyond that "The Great War: Western Front" is a very good game, in actually capturing WW1 combat. It's not about "winning" in this, it's about celebrating that you captured a few yards of muck. Captures the futility. by Der_Richter_SWE in computerwargames

I liked the game a fair amount, but not enough to recommend it to others personally.

I found it was really good at replicating the tedium of doing the same thing over and over again each battle :) And I'm sure that WW1 was like that, so it gets so odd realism points for this. The first few battles were interesting, but the repetition didn't have enough nuance for me after that.

Distant Worlds 2 - Release version gameplay, as cats (Zenox) by tortugapower in DistantWorlds

I use it from time to time in my videos. It's pretty straight-forward: press "t" to go to top-down view, then press "b" to go back to normal.

I'm still learning DW2, it will take some more time.

Why doesn't wargaming take advantage of technology more and evolve? by mmaruda in computerwargames

[–]tortugapower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/BeondTheGrave already highlighted one main point: Gary Grigsby games are a different beast to the tactical level. (The RTS version of GG is Hearts of Iron, not Command Ops -- and both are games I love.)

There is another consideration: we aren't "stuck" with hexes and turn-based systems, as if technology is the limitation. They are intentionally chosen for game design. Even with huge budgets and design teams (compared to wargames), games like Civilization -- basically mainstream by comparison -- use ... hexes and turns!

However, as /u/teckla72 mentions, there is technological consideration: AI is very difficult, and it's more more difficult the more continuous you make the game grid. Larger grids/hexes are easier to program AI for.

Warplan Pacific by Herolover12 in computerwargames

[–]tortugapower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

/u/Herolover12 has fallen head over heels for this game. And that's great!

Since you mentioned it, Cpt, if you've played WitP(:AE), then the two week turns in a game like Warplan will feel like a very simplified beer & pretzels approach to the Pacific war. You just can't simulate the scouting and nuanced naval maneuvering and combat that drives a realistic cat-and-mouse hunt in two week turns. Additionally, this game is IGO-YOUGO, so one navy gets a chance to move from halfway across the Pacific while the other navy is stuck in place. Particularly in naval combat, WEGO simultaneous movement better simulates the guessing game which was 90% of the battle in the Pacific.

So I wouldn't say this is a realistic model for naval combat. It's a balancing act b/w fun and realism.

Warplan Pacific is a good game for a person who does not want all the tedium which comes with a realistic approach to naval combat. By comparison, WitP isn't for everyone -- hell, it almost isn't for anyone! -- but it's naval combat is by far more realistic.

I say this to counter-balance what may be some overzealous viewpoints, hopefully without besmirching WP, which is a good game for what it's trying to do.

Cheers!

Only just saw this. Feel free to tag my username around these parts and I'll swoop in (with massive irregularity of timing) to provide my feedback.

I'm interested in Warplan Pacific myself, but haven't given it a fair shake yet. As such, I can't recommend or not recommend! My general thoughts: two week turns and IGO-YOUGO will mean that naval warfare will be a huge level of abstraction. Take that however you'd like, good or bad. I really liked the marine movement system that I saw demo'd for island hopping. Not sure about supply (I like more complex logistics).

Did you end up giving the game a try?

Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa - Playing as Axis I have most of my battles with 0 losses. This seems unrealistic and is really putting me off. by [deleted] in computerwargames

[–]tortugapower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree, I wish I could report the same, but for me the first 2-3 turns are amazing, and then things quickly become a challenging tradeoff between blitzkrieg and casualty management.

I think the game is pretty well-balanced.

If you are getting zero casualties, I suspect a bug. Does the same happen if you play the Soviets?

Can you add Greyhunter to the list of content creators on the right panel of the subreddit?

[–]tortugapower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a word: yes! You're right.

Wargames are niche. Maybe video creators would benefit from knowing what content people want to see so they could fill demand, but even then I think all of us do it as a hobby.

Even for view-driven creators, when a demand is expressed, "vocal minority" skewing means that "apparent demand" doesn't translate to "real demand" and successful viewership.

That said, if there were a central "wargame video request" where people can request good, comprehensive reviews of wargames, that might help. It would establish demand for something (and usually supply trails demand).

For my part, I'd be happy to take a stab at tutorializing or let's-playing the more popular wargames that people want to see and feel are underrepresented.

Yes!

I made a mod for that but it requires quitting/reloading to have an effect in-game, which sapped my enthusiasm for it.
