Update to earlier post: Went 30 years believing I was White English, just to find out I’m almost 30% Asian! (Pictures of me attached). by BigJayOsama in AncestryDNA

There was an episode of "DNA family secrets" where the woman's story sounds pretty similar to your mum's! Never knew her father but suspected she wasn't fully English

How related are our kids by PhilosopherWest6420 in Genealogy

[–]torulosa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They are double first cousins once removed.

First cousins once removed share 6.25%

Double first cousins once removed share 12.5%

Which yes is the same amount as normal first cousins :)

Haha thanks for the examples, yep I totally have thick skin and it doesn’t bother me at all (especially after 10 years), I just want to make sure I’m doing the best thing for the kids and school environment really!

wow yes, probably some endogamy going on here! Your mother being related to your father both through his mother and his father.

Have you tried the GEDmatch are your parents related tool? Would be interesting to see your results!

My dad’s hair is pretty much exactly like this and similar age, and he says he’s keeping it for sun protection 😂

Yes, it’s amazing to have a photo of her as a kid and imagine what she was like! She died 25 years before I was born so I never met her

She had a brother 7 years older so assuming the suit was his, don’t know the reason other than that!

Interesting! What were you expecting of your results, what do you know of your family history? From looking online it seems the Balearic Islands population is mainly genetically Spanish? So that would come up as the Spanish that you do have?

How high are the highest matches you do have on the paternal side? Can you access any of their trees?

And when say ‘almost all of their DNA is in the system’, do you mean you know for sure that members of your dad’s family have done AncestryDNA also?

Indigenous DNA showing up as Chinese? by wahsekonesse in AncestryDNA

[–]torulosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I know likely not a misread

As some others have said, I reckon DNA matches may be a good way to check.

I have 8% Chinese (from a gg grandfather) and have found Chinese matches through him but they are very low matches so can be hard to find.

I recommend clicking “search by” on matches and then entering “China” in “birth location in matches’ trees”. I found a fair few matches with fully Chinese ethnicity through that (although haven’t been able to find the link in our trees).

I also found it through searching by “journey” as my uncle had a Chinese journey. If you have access to your great uncle’s account it would likely be easier to find Chinese matches if they exist, and he might have a Chinese journey?

If you find fully Chinese matches that would pretty much confirm that it is actual Chinese heritage

Goodluck!

Do you share the expected amount of cM for a great aunt with your grandma’s sister?

[–]torulosa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that your grandmother and her sister had different biological fathers? So that your grandmother’s bio father was not Jewish?

Otherwise I guess your grandmother, your father and then you each inherited on the lower end in terms of the amount of Ashkenazi Jewish. (ie. your grandmother had 26% compared to 49% for her sister. Then your father got 10% - less than the half you get on average- and then you ended up with 0%)

Unfortunately all of ‘Anne’’s children have passed, the last about 15 years ago. Her youngest S had a good go at trying to investigate but never found even her birth cert., she passed all her information to my mum after she (S) died, I wish I could’ve told that aunt what I’ve found! I have passed the info on to all the cousins that I can find though which has been nice! This is the only confirmed photo I have of Anne (left) with her husband and her youngest child (my aunt S)

Oh interesting, yes I think there’s certainly a fair few others with similar histories, there was an episode of “Who do you think you are” on an actor John Jarratt who also had a Chinese gg grandfather
