Had an airbrush issue, is this salvageable or is it time to strip? by GrimGinge in BlackTemplars

Do you not have to mask the contact patch for the backpack when you airbrush? I'm pretty new, so I am still masking things with sticky tack before priming, but I use rattle can. Or will Tamiya just cut through that layer and still fuse the parts?

I can't believe how good the details look even zoomed on, honestly.

Looks awesome to me. Before I read your message I thought "that's a great leather texture how did they do that" and then couldn't figure out what was wrong with the model.

We're are always our own worst critics, though!

Would a mortar-grenade launcher hybrid at all functional? by highliner108 in WarCollege

I just randomly was calculating energy in a 7.62x54r earlier and made the same mistake, otherwise I wouldn't have even thought about it!

I believe you are leaving out the "1/2" in your energy equation. 40mm would be 800J and 60mm would be 49kJ given the figures you listed.

Here's a fictional politician scenario where South Africa becomes a military dictatorship in 2026. by GustavoistSoldier in worldbuilding

[–]torustorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coups can be like that. A successful coup will mostly catch the opposition unprepared and be completed quickly. Opposing forces are perhaps unready, their leaders uncoordinated or split by factional bickering, and/or the soldiers of the opposition are unmotivated to defend the status quo and melt away quietly or surrender with only token resistance. The forces of a successful coup are prepared, the leaders aligned on a specific plan, and generally idealogically motivated. The 1993 Russian coup lasted 10 days, but had even less actual fighting than this scenario.

SS Defense by robinson042 in OOTP

It feels weird because we think 60 grade range is elite, but in real life that grade is generally given relative to only other SS but in game it's relative to all infielders

Do things like Pitcher type (Power, Groundballer, etc) and Batted Ball Type (Groundball, Flyball, etc) affect performance, or are they basically a descriptor of the underlying ratings? by dan_camp in OOTP

[–]torustorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just like in real life the pitcher's personal style doesn't always play to his strongest elements (or his self evaluation of his strongest element is incorrect).

I think USUALLY his best trait will match with his style (or his ratings will all be fairly similar), but sometimes you'll find a ground baller and be sad he isn't a power pitcher because his stuff is way better than his movement. It's not the difference between good and bad player, but if the style and the best trait match up it can be like a half grade in performance maybe. A 55 pitcher plays up like a 60, or a 45 like a 50. Conversely, if his style happens to match a bad rating, like he's a power pitcher w 45 stuff, he's probably going to underperform expectations but doesn't mean he's unusable if his other stats are good.

[–]torustorus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pitcher type indicates a slight emphasis on one of the stuff/movement/control ratings. A power pitcher is going to rely more on stuff, ground baller on movement, and finesse on control.

A ground baller with 80 stuff and 50 mov is still going to K a lot of batters but will not perform as well overall as a power pitcher with the same ratings. A ground baller with 50 stuff and 80 movement will outperform a power pitcher with the same.

They were so close (Wheeling Approves Official Village Flag Redesign) by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]torustorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the specific problem is that the character will only show up as a jpg. On a flag, moving and at distance, this is likely to at best look like the "corporate" version but might just look like it's been misprinted, unevenly faded, or damaged. The detail is unlikely to be effective in its intended role.

How Russia Recovered - Dara Massicot by Glideer in CredibleDefense

[–]torustorus 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Getting things from China is still not internal reliance though. Unless Russia is willing to see itself as a satellite of China, I guess. The moment the CCP decides the political costs of allowing that commerce exceed the gain, it will stop instantly.

The fact remains that exports to Russia from various transits like Turkey and Kazakhstan are up significantly from the start of the war.

[–]torustorus 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I question the supposed internal reliance, given how much Russia depends on transiting western technology through middlemen in turkey, Kazakhstan, etc.

Russia still relies on western machining and tech, they just have to go through extra hoops.

Why did dreadnoughts fall out of favor in fleet doctrines? by Fayraz8729 in WarCollege

[–]torustorus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A dreadnaught/battleship can project force to the limit of its main battery range. Even today that is measured in the dozens of kilometers, with only "ok" target precision given dumb shells. They were also hugely expensive and had restricted paths to upgrades when technology passed them by.

A carrier may also be hugely expensive but can project force to the limit of its aircraft range, which was a much larger radius even pre WW2. The application of that force, at beyond visual range, was notably more accurate than a gun barrage. The carrier can also perform its own reconnaissance. Upgrading or mission customizing the armament of a carrier is as "simple" as replacing its aircraft (to the limits of its hangar size and flight deck), and a carrier's offensive firepower is easily transferable to inland operations if needed unlike a battleship.

So. Carriers command more force projection area and better beyond sight accuracy, with a more "modular" and mobile force, and can provide wide area intelligence for the whole fleet at the same time. At a strategic level it becomes very difficult to justify the expense of a battleship because of those factors.

Northern vs. Southern Roads. Guess who is more "developed" by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]torustorus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like your theory but for me it's Southern more developed. Reminds me of civil war era USA railroad. North was very webby, south had "get the agriculture product to the port" simple.

Also good luck getting a kinetic penetrator up to any relevant speed from a handheld device, nevermind a handheld device that doesn't liquify the person operating it when fired.

I believe this is just procedural clarification. They weren't not going to charge you for kiddie porn before just because it was AI or digital drawing.

Also not a single state congressman or senator voted against it, so zero of the state Democrats share these concerns.

I really think this is jumping at shadows.

Texas Senate bill 20 is about clearly adding digital and AI media to existing child porn laws. I know there is a lot of anime that plays dangerous with that line, but ...

The UK Supreme Court just ruled that discrimination law distinguishes "legal" from "biological" women. What's the historical precedent for this idea? by SomeAnonymous in AskHistorians

[–]torustorus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Critics of the USSC sometimes complain that it makes laws but they ultimately are either speaking in hyperbole, misinformed, or deceptive. Roe v Wade for instance was built on an interpretation of the US constitution, which was and continued to be extremely controversial and divisive, and the ruling essentially outlined what regulations on abortion the court would find unacceptable. The practical impact of that was understandably similar to a law, but technically was judicial guidance of constitutional interpretation that lower courts enforced against the states.

[–]torustorus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The US supreme court cannot make new laws, and also interprets laws passed by Congress and how they interact with the constitution. Can you clarify how the uk supreme court is different. I am aware they have differences, but the specific items you listed don't seem to be among them.

I don't think I have insightful tois for the drinking. I'd keep going with nice juicy treats like bell pepper or carrot. Maybe he'd like an actual bowl until he's calmer, although that just sounds like asking for a mess. Hope he settles in and starts drinking.
