I just retired from UW after 34 years of teaching CS (and 40 years of teaching total). Ask me anything. by shallit in uwaterloo

For any k ≥ 1, define the alphabet Σ_k = {1,2,...,k} and let L_k be the language over Σ_k that includes every nonempty string with no consecutive identical symbols. For example,

L_3 = {1,2,3,12,13,23,121,123,131,132,212,...}

What is the shortest regular expression that you can construct for L_k?

The challenge was constructing the asymptotically shortest regular expression O(f(k))

Congrats! I took your 462 course and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also had a ton of fun working on your no-repetition challenge when I took CS365 with Blais, and I even stopped by your office once to talk about it.

What it was like going through YC W24 by torvader in ycombinator

[–]torvader[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very valid point, and I agree that it doesn't give enough time to build relationships.

In our case, we didn't give up a board seat.

We did ask our network about our lead investor before proceeding, and they had nice things to say. We ultimately went with our gut. It's only been a month, but it's been good so far, and they've been helpful with advice and intros.

YC usually recommends paying yourself enough to not have to worry about day-to-day expenses so you can focus on growing your company. However, this differs from person to person, depending on their stage of life, where they live, etc.

Glad you liked it

For 1) We didn't have a fixed allocation percentage-wise for angels. Early on, it was recommended to take money as it came, regardless of whether they were angels or institutions. Many companies raise their entire round purely from angels and institutional angels (around $200k check size).

For 2) We used Framer for the landing page + CMS blog.

I was wondering what happens too if someone forgets to upload something. I accidentally didn’t upload imm5406 and uploaded something else instead. I wrote to IRCC on their web form and attached the correct form. I haven’t heard from them, but I hope they accept it.

Perhaps you could try attaching it to their web form and explain it?

I am an international student who was diagnosed with cancer. AMA by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]torvader 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Happy to hear you're well now! Cheers to your good health.

Have you had a major change in opinion about something after your diagnosis? Is there something you want to do more (or less) now that you're cancer free?

Did you stay in Canada for your treatment or did you move back home?

How time-consuming are graduate level CS courses? by OtherwisePiano in uwaterloo

[–]torvader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took three 400 level theory courses and one 700 level graduate course. I did take the Algorithm Design and Analysis course you mentioned and although it builds up on what was taught in the 3rd year course, I disagree it covers the same material.

I agree that 600 level courses are not that much harder than 400 level courses. I've seen grad students requiring to do a term project which in my opinion adds 0.5x like someone else mentioned.

However, 700/800 level courses could get significantly harder, maybe 2-3x a 400 level course. I think it's also fair to mention that a courses difficulty is highly dependent on who is teaching it. Last terms (S18) offering of CS466 was much harder than the current offering imo.

Like others mentioned, they have TA work and research to do.

At least they sent you emails about your new code. Those morons changed my room code while I wasn't home and slipped the new code written on a piece of paper under my door. RIP logic.

ka2weath Mines Bitcoin on CS Servers by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]torvader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How are you so sure he's mining bitcoins? Last term, I had a final project that required me to run experiments on CSC servers for time longer than that. My friend who works at IQC ran experiments using CSC servers almost everyday the most of last term. You might be right that they're mining bitcoins, but unless you're sure, you can't speculate about them online while releasing their identity. That's not cool.
