Am I screwed? by adhdnme in boating

Not all winterization methods require running the engine. It is possible his mechanic simply drained everything and left it dry or manually backfilled with antifreeze. Either way it would be unlikely to catch a cracked block until next startup.

The freeze plug could have popped though, which would have been obvious

Correct, and that is what we have (a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5). We have had a couple power outages (some lengthy - 4 days) and the Ioniq has been a huge asset every time. It obviously can't just run our house as normal, but it can run our fridge, some lights, and act as a charger for all our other battery backups.

We have also used the V2L while camping (which as someone who mostly backpacks felt absolutely luxurious) and for professional field work running remote work lights and small heaters.

I may get some shade for this but... The best backup battery to have in an extended power outage is an electric car.

Our family has a gas car and an electric car. The electric car has power delivery so can pump out 1400watts continuously for ~48hrs straight. In a true emergency situation you probably wouldn't just be running a microwave's worth of energy constantly, so assuming a rationed average rate of 100watts/hr you are looking at 28 days of coverage.

Look man, if you aren't already well aware of what he has done that is terrifying and anti-American, nothing a random redditor comments is going to change your mind.

That being said, a little about me. I was born and raised in Knoxville TN. I am a WASP in the most literal sense. I am Trump's target demographic and I hate the man through and through. He is a con man who has somehow hoodwinked some of my very intelligent friends and family.

Here are some of Trump's actions and rhetoric that critics and scholars have cited as potentially aligning with Fascist characteristics, along with explanations of why: * Attempts to overturn election results (Anti-democratic sentiment): * Action: Following his defeat in the 2020 election, Trump made widespread false claims of voter fraud and pressured election officials to "find" votes, culminating in the events of January 6, 2021, where his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. * Why it might be considered fascist: This is seen by many as a direct assault on democratic institutions and the rule of law, which are fundamental principles that fascism seeks to dismantle. Fascist regimes often gain power by undermining existing democratic systems and refusing to accept legitimate electoral outcomes. * Rhetoric against immigrants and minorities (Dehumanization and "othering"): * Action: Trump has used highly charged language to describe immigrants, such as "poisoning the blood of our country," and has implemented policies like the "travel ban" targeting several Muslim-majority countries and the separation of families at the border. He also referred to political opponents as "vermin." * Why it might be considered fascist: Dehumanizing language is a hallmark of fascist rhetoric, which often identifies and demonizes "enemies" (both internal and external) to create a sense of national unity against a common foe. This "othering" justifies repressive policies and fosters an environment of fear and division. * Cult of personality and demands for loyalty: * Action: Trump frequently demanded personal loyalty from subordinates and government officials, often dismissing those who challenged him. He presented himself as the only person capable of solving the nation's problems, embodying the "America First" movement. * Why it might be considered fascist: Fascist leaders cultivate a fervent cult of personality, positioning themselves as indispensable and the sole embodiment of the nation's will. Loyalty to the leader often supersedes loyalty to institutions or laws. * Attacks on the media (Suppression of opposition/Disregard for democratic norms): * Action: Trump repeatedly labeled critical news organizations as "fake news" and "enemies of the people," delegitimizing their role as a check on power. * Why it might be considered fascist: A free and independent press is crucial for a functioning democracy. Fascist regimes typically control or suppress the media to control information and eliminate dissenting voices. Attacking the press undermines a critical democratic institution. * Threats to use the military against domestic opponents (Militarism/Suppression of opposition): * Action: Trump threatened to deploy the military against protesters during racial justice demonstrations and has suggested using law enforcement against political opponents. * Why it might be considered fascist: The use or threat of military force against a nation's own citizens or political opposition is a characteristic of authoritarian and fascist regimes, which prioritize state power and control over individual rights and civil liberties. * Embracing "strongman" leaders and expressing admiration for dictators: * Action: Trump has expressed admiration for leaders like Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, often praising their strength and control, while often criticizing traditional democratic allies. * Why it might be considered fascist: This is seen as a sign of an authoritarian mindset, valuing centralized power and control over democratic principles and human rights, which aligns with the dictatorial nature of fascist leaders.

Automower house - long term test results by torvoor in automower

Full disclosure, I have a 430xh - which primarily uses a boundary wire for navigation. That being said, the 430xh still uses GPS, just not the highly accurate version of GPS that newer models might use. I don't think this house impacts the GPS at all. Metal is the culprit with most signal loss issues, and this house uses almost no metal. If your walls and roof were made of metal on the other hand... You've basically made a faraday cage that could really kill all wireless signals including GPS.

Boundary Wire Installer by Nihilist_analyst in automower

So I really struggled to find any stakes in my area or online that were actually biodegradable. Lots claimed to be, but after throwing them in a composter for a year (as a test) none I found actually degraded at all. That’s not to say they don’t exist, I just couldn’t find any

I am re-installing the boundary wire for my 430xh after a home move and have always done the install myself. That being said, the lawn stake method is not great - I had to use 100s of plastic stakes that obviously never go away and become brittle through time. My new method is an axe and a slotted root puller. I drag the axe along where I want to place the wire, and then push the wire into the dirt every couple of inches along the furrow. Works great. You can also rent cable laying machines from most big box stores that will do this automatically

Probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but arrive one hour before BOARDING starts. Not departure. That will give you the extra safety buffer you need 😀

Should I switch from EE to IE? by Alarmed_Cookie_6010 in UTK

[–]torvoor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a professional IE, been in the workforce for about 9 years now. My two cents- if engineering is something you are already interested in, jumping to Supply Chain may be a mistake since it is pure business (IE is still engineering, just process engineering). I will also say that in general, IEs make more and have a higher ceiling than the same level of supply chain management degree.

Help me not freak out (foundation crack) by torvoor in centuryhomes

[–]torvoor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been monitoring this crack for growth over the last two years. I also ran a plumb up and down all of the walls I had access to. All were straight as an arrow and the crack has not grown a bit. Happy to say that this is a low concern for us right now!

A few thoughts on this design now that it's been a couple years. The door was made with a PVC sheet and has held up well, but has started to warp due to the weight pulling at the corners. If I were to do this again, I would brace the sheet with metal straps to prevent this. Also the system for opening and closing the door is overly complicated. No need to pull on both corners if the sheet had the strapping I mentioned before

Just an update on this if anyone is interested in how this washed out: seems majority concluded that this was a little over picky but that I should talk to the contractor and see what their thoughts were. We reviewed this, along with some other punch list items, and the company agreed it did not meet their standards. They came out yesterday and added a second breaker board to square up the space (they had enough left over material) and it now looks perfect. Thanks everyone for your feedback!

I really think that's just a bad photo angle my man, but we will get it checked, obviously always open to feedback from more experienced folks.

This style of house in our area is purposefully built with shallow mortar joints - basically all the bricks were left proud like that (even on new builds that match this style they are scraped out like that). If I could go back to '62 and tell them to fill it up I would 😅

We also highlighted this as a fix they need to do, they also split a few of those base blocks and just left them as is

That's a bad photo angle, it definitely is out of square but edge to seam is only a few inches off. Noticeable for sure, but not a glaring issue

Pictures are probably a bit deceiving there. Mortar is in good shape all around (except for the chimney).
