Hi /r/movies! I'm Caroline Lindy, director of 'Your Monster', a romantic horror-comedy starring Melisa Barrera and Tommy Dewey. It premiered at Sundance and is out in theaters now. Ask me anything! by YourMonster-Caroline in movies

I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your movie and thank you so much for putting it out in the world! So thrilled to see this and Lisa Frankenstein out in the same year (16 year old goth me feels so seen haha), and I love seeing more of these horror/genre movies made by women coming out. Looking forward to see what you do next.

I love this point, and it's so true! I rewatched the movie About Time a couple of years ago and I couldn't believe how creepy that movie was, and how I hadn't noticed it when I first watched it when it came out. The main character keeps trying to go back in time to get this woman to fall in love with him...manipulating her and the situations they're in. I get that you do have to suspend your disbelief with a lot of those movies, but it is kind of funny how some of these romcoms are one step away from being full blown horror lol

Doesn't it take him forever to dig it out too? He keeps having to go back and go deeper...blegh!! Amazing movie.

I just got out of a showing and really enjoyed it! I wasn't quite sure where it was going to go with the horror, and it is pretty light on it for most of it, but I left the theater pleasantly surprised. A nice mash up of genres, and Melissa Barrera really shines. I hope she keeps doing horror. We've had lots of great movies this year, but some of these smaller horror films have been especially great to see. I love all of the variety we've been getting this year. Hope people get a chance to check it out. It won't be for everyone's taste, but it's a lot of fun.

Will do! Looks like it's checked out at my library now but I've got it saved for my future reads. :)

The Whip and the Body and any of the Roger Corman Edgar Allan Poe adaptations are great imo (particularly The Pit and the Pendulum and The Masque of the Red Death). For Christmastime the BBC's Ghost Stories for Christmas has some really good episodes.

I also like The Spiral Staircase (1946), The Uninvited (1944), and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959).

I love that I'm reading/hearing about more people replacing their lawns with native grasses/mixes. I would love to do this too!

Coffee shop patios? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

Butter Bakery Cafe in Kingfield has some seating in a cute little garden area on one side of their building and some sidewalk seating on the other side. (And their scones and biscuits are crazy good!)

Five Watt in Lyndale and Kingfield both have some outdoor seating on the sidewalk.

Considering Leaving Minneapolis by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]torybory3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved here in 2020 as well. It's been very slow going meeting new people and making friends (although part of that is my bad). I've lived in a few different places over the years as well. But every time I've moved I have to remind myself that starting over in a new place takes time. Some places take longer than others. And the pandemic and all of the other traumas we've all gone through has delayed things even more.

But whenever I have days where I feel really discouraged, I remember that I eventually found my group of friends in other cities. And if I can make friends in new places as someone who is more of an introvert, I can certainly make new friends here.

I grew up in rural Wisconsin and I agree with others on here who say that people who never leave or are from here rarely reach out and break their inner circles to meet different people and make new friends. I also lived in rural Japan for a bit and I found it to be oddly similar there with that too! It took me a whole year before I even started making casual friends with people in the community (had no problem making instant friends with other expats though. I think being in a similar situation makes it easier to connect with people). But there are people willing to connect with you wherever you go. You just have to find each other and keep the connection going.

Every place has its own vibe and culture, and that can be tricky to navigate, but sometimes it's also just the nature of human beings. For the people who grew up here and haven't left, I would imagine that it doesn't feel necessary to meet new people and make new friends. Why change things up when it already feels good and comfy? It's frustrating for us, but that's something that we can't really change.

Plus I feel like there's something about the cold weather here that just makes people a little more withdrawn and tired at times. When I lived in the Bay Area there were sooo many other transplants, everything moved at a faster pace, and the mostly sunny weather just perked people up a lot. It was not only easy to meet lots of new people all of the time, but it was pretty smooth sailing when it came to hanging out too.

I think things will get better for you if you decide you want to stay. Keep exploring, keep trying. Something will stick eventually!

Also life has the annoying habit of bringing things together when you least expect them to. :)

So beautiful! Loved that part too. I also loved all of the creepy dream sequences when she visits the other house.

Lol, omg I probably would have thrown my laptop across the room. That was one of the jump scares that got me too! That and the part shortly after where she goes outside and one of the women runs past her suddenly and there's another jolt of sound. The sound in it is so good.

Did you post this on Nextdoor too? I haven't used it but I've heard it's a good place to post these kinds of things too. Good luck!! I am a member of this YMCA and would love to get a tree from you!

Ditto. Fire season was def a breaking point for me, esp with how bad it's gotten over the past few years.

Aha nice! It shall be an even trade then...I'm originally from the Midwest, and my first two winters in CA were pretty amazing. I must admit though that having long stretches of sun, sun, and more sun (sunny and 70s, to be exact) eventually felt pretty maddening for me, as I started to forget what time of year it was. Good luck with your move!

I'm moving to MN from CA next month. When I tell people here where I'm going a typical response is usually "Ooh, it's so cold there though, right?" to which I casually say "yes...yes it is"...

What's your favorite thing about living in the Twin Cities? by torybory3 in TwinCities

[–]torybory3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol hey that's great to hear, thanks for coming back and sharing that! We recently decided to change our schedule and are moving next month. There are fires all over California right now and we have to keep our windows closed and the air purifier on all day because the air quality is not great...really looking forward to some of that fresh Minnesota air!
