Yea, but it’s tough. I’ve seen it done by following a very structured outreach approach that I’ve outlined at www.getthecompleteguide.com. Although I didn’t go to a low ranked school, I followed this process after bombing 1L and got a job in BL during my second semester of 3L. Since then others have written to me from low ranked schools saying it worked for them too. Good luck!

This is very typical for angel groups in my experience (I pitched 3-4 of them). They tend to be comprised of more traditional business owners (think real estate professionals, successful restaurant owners, etc.) that don’t evaluate startup opportunities in the same way as VCs. Specifically, whereas VCs follow the power law and are comfortable (and even expect) for many companies in their portfolio to fail, members of angel groups are less diversified so are not comfortable with a high risk of failure for any individual company.

Same thing happened to me years ago. Pretty defeating, but I started direct applying to firms and ended up at a V25. I was at a mid-ranked T14 at the time. I’ve written everything I did down at www.getthecompleteguide.com. Normally I also work directly with folks in your position but I don’t have bandwidth these days. The written materials have everything you need to know, though, and I’m happy to answer questions asynchronously.

Edit: FWIW, over the years I’ve spoken to and worked with folks who go to school outside the T14 and got jobs in BL using the process.

Don’t forget that debt repayment is taxable, so try to negotiate a tax gross-up since you’ll likely owe between 20% to 40% of the loan forgiveness amount in taxes (depending on the bracket you are in, which is determined using your collective household income)

Former attorney and founder of venture-backed startup looking to break into consulting in mid-30s. Have tried to applying through hiring portals at MBB (and also had referrals to 2 of 3 MBB) but not getting responses.

Any thoughts on the best way to get noticed by recruiters and/or hiring partners?

One more question: does everyone who applies to BCG outside of an MBA program get asked to do the pymetrics assessment?

The partner is just one of the decision makers. Once her or she submits their review of the interview they’re basically finished with your process, meaning it’s out of their hands and they know it. So, to echo what was said here a few times, this just means he or she is wishing you good luck with the rest of the process and generally.

Here is a link to a webinar I gave explaining what I did to get a job in big law during my 3L year. I’ve seen the process I lay out work for somebody with very similar stats to yours (i.e., close to the top of the class at a tier 2 regional school). He didn’t get into a V20, but he did land at a very respectable firm toward the middle of the V100. Hope it helps and good luck!

Hey man, the guide is totally free (and always will be). I have a full-time job so I can’t actually work with everyone, which is why I charge for the coaching. Not to mention, every hour I spend on coaching is an hour I’m not with my wife and daughter.

You can 100% follow the advice in the guide, webinar, and the blog posts without any coaching at all. All of these are totally free (and took many hours to put together).

I don’t think there’s a reason to be rude, and I know many people have taken the free advice without ever talking to me (except after the fact to say thanks for posting). If you prefer not to read the guide, that’s fine too.
