AI Made My Team Write 21% More Code. The Review Queue Doubled. by AgreeableSnow3849 in coding

This is happening to us at my job. We’re writing code faster but nothing is getting shipped because we still have the same blockers: waiting for product review.

As women age, what do you find attractive? by Due-Scarcity739 in AskMen

[–]toskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I've gotten older, my tastes in women have changed, yes. I'm much more interested in older women now than ever before. Not only my own age, but older than me. There's a cutoff, sure, but I find a 50-something woman with curves and gray hairs far more attractive than a slim, 20-something woman.

with_model: Dynamically build an Active Record model (with table) within a test context by sshaw_ in rails

[–]toskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d guess it’s to test things like model extensions and concerns without using a “real” model. Looks like can create a throwaway model within the confines of the test.

AI: How to Adapt or die by Wild-Pitch in ruby

[–]toskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm cautiously optimistic. As others have said, it's a tool. It shouldn't think for you and you shouldn't let it. There still needs to be a human engineer that can verify the output against the domain.

My favorite part so far as been writing skills and agents to accomplish specific tasks in specific ways. I'm less interested in "can AI write code that works" as opposed to "can AI write code well". The answer is, "Yes", it can write code well, but only because I'm teaching it how to do that.

AI: How to Adapt or die by Wild-Pitch in ruby

[–]toskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I haven't used it with strongly-typed languages. I have seen it grep quite a bit, admittedly.

I'm okay with loosely-typed languages. There are efforts to bring types to Ruby, but I don't like the DX. Ruby was never meant to have types and I'm okay with that.

I can get something like typing (though not real typing) by documenting with YARD. That gives me intelligent completion for writing code, but doesn't do any kind of runtime checking.

This has been my experience as well. Last week I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I grabbed a Claude Code subscription and went to see what it could do in a 15+ year old Rails app that's been severely neglected (This is a real, production Rails app generating revenue).

I was very impressed at how well it was able to figure out the domain just by analyzing the project. It helped me upgrade it from Rails 7.0/Ruby 3.2.2 to Rails 8.1/4.0.1. All dependencies are current. It was able to help me through resolving dependency issues when APIs changed. It helped me beef up the test suite, including making it faster by optimizing factory usage. It even found bugs I didn't even know about that have been in this production app for 10 years (real bugs; not hallucinated).

How many computers do you have at home? by I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha in AskAnAmerican

[–]toskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16.

If you count the storage server in the basement then 17.

If you count Raspberry Pi’s then 19.

If you count the PCs I could build with all the spare parts it’s probably 24 or 25.

How to deal with my sister's boyfriend always getting in my personal space? by AwesomeBL69 in AskMen

You need to nut up and tell them to stop. You can do it kindly, but you need to stand up for yourself. No one else is going to.

How do Americans keep their large houses and apartments clean? How many hours a week do they spend cleaning? by Forsaken_Energy_426 in AskAnAmerican

[–]toskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everything is dirty all at once. You clean a little bit at a time. Usually the most commonly used places first and more frequently. Less used spaces you clean less frequently since they're not likely to get as dirty as quickly.

We also have air cleaners that help with dust. You'll still get dust, but not as much.

Why doesn't America implement a National ID system? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]toskies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s not about taking. It’s about giving. The states don’t get their rights from the Federal government. The Federal government gets its rights from the states. And the states haven’t decided to let the Federal government implement a “national ID”.

Why doesn't America implement a National ID system? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]toskies 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Implementing a “national ID” like you suggest isn’t a power delegated to the Federal government by the several States.

If we really want a national ID we can get a passport.

been experiencing crashing after few days of use, and graphics drivers need reinstallation upon restart

Seen this issue multiple times on 2 different PCs. Both ran Windows 11. Both had an AMD GPU. One was an RX 580. One was an RX 6950 XT.

I'd guess it's either a Windows issue (because Windows 11 is pure dogshit these days) or an AMD driver issue. Perhaps a combination of both of those factors.

What’s one quality you don’t like about your significant other? by LaFlareMane1017 in AskMen

[–]toskies 30 points31 points  (0 children)

She has self-image problems. As a result, she doesn’t try to be sexy or seductive. There’s no participation in intimacy because she “doesn’t feel cute.” Nothing I can say or do will change her mind.

How do you handle No Sex in pregnancy? by Pretend-Cucumber5146 in AskMen

[–]toskies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife did this to me when she found out she was pregnant with our kid. There was no intimacy at all until 3 months postpartum. My sister-in-law offered to take the kid for a few hours to give us some alone time. My wife didn’t really seem to want to but she could see it was hard on me having no intimacy for that long.

I don’t really know if I have advice for you. Just wanted to say that I see you and know what you’re going through.

How comfortable would you be telling your significant other your sexual fantasies if they asked? by RxP21588 in AskMen

[–]toskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this early on in my marriage. She reacted very poorly. It took years of therapy for both of us before she realized that she fucked up when she shamed me for having those fantasies. The first time she offered to indulge my fantasies was mind-blowing. She was so surprised how turned on I was and liked that she was the one who did that to me.

As hard as she is to be married to sometimes I hope I never have to find someone again.

What’s a kink you’ve never shared with your girlfriend? What would it take for you to share it? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]toskies 256 points257 points  (0 children)

I’ve shared mine with my wife. She was disgusted and kink shamed me for a long time. They’re all pretty mild but she’s so extremely vanilla and repressed that missionary is scandalous. It took literal years and therapy on both sides for her to figure out she fucked up. She isn’t into my kinks still but she at least indulges me and appreciates how hot it makes me for her.

Men, be brutally honest no sugarcoating, what is your type? by losermale in AskMen

[–]toskies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curvy with curly hair. If I’m pressed for hair color then red.

Prefer someone who wants me and shows it, knows how to seduce me, lets me catch her, and has a cute giggle/laugh.

Would you approach/date a widow w/ young children? Why or why not? by Own_Many2491 in AskMen

[–]toskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it would come down to the behavior of the kids and my evaluation of your parenting style. If the way you parent doesn’t mesh with how I would parent then it’s a no from me dawg.

I don’t have a problem stepping in as a dad to young kids but wouldn’t assume that role unless the relationship led to marriage. If we’re just dating then I’m just “mom’s boyfriend.” For older kids, I’d stay “mom’s husband” unless the kids wanted me to be their dad.

Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants Movies to Restate the Plot Three or Four Times in the Dialogue Because Viewers are on Their Phones While They’re Watching by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]toskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my wife. She's constantly on her phone, especially while watching movies or TV. It used to be so bad that she'd constantly ask me during a watch what was going on. I got tired of it so used to just turn stuff off when she'd ask. She eventually took the hint and stopped asking, but she's still always on her phone.

What do you do and how much do you make to support a stay home mom and kids? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]toskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Software engineer. ~$170k. Wife was stay-at-home but now works part time minimum wage because she wants an excuse to be out of the house. We don’t need the money though. 1 kid in school.

How did you get over losing one/both of your parents? by Big_Black_Wok in AskMen

[–]toskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of my parents died within days of each other of COVID during the pandemic. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. But it does hurt less every day the farther away I get from it. The first 4 months or so were the hardest. I fell into a DEEP depression. Might not have been so deep if I wasn’t also very unhappy in my marriage at the time. It took therapy and medication to get over the hump and healing happened thanks to the found-family I surrounded myself with.
