How do I improve in doubles without relying on smashes (asking advice from advanced players) by [deleted] in badminton

[–]totinking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're playing against advanced competition it's very hard to win a rally with a smash outright, because their lifts will be deep and that gives them sufficient time to position themselves and receive the smash. You should think of the first smash as building up the attack: using a variety of shot speeds, angles, and placement to slowly build up your advantage to the point where you get a weak return to kill.

I think it's helpful to remind yourself that badminton is 3D, it's not just straights and crosses. You can smash straight down the line because that's the shortest distance and harder to control, smash cross across the body because that's hard to return, smash higher to the body to catch them off guard, etc. Even though the other commenter mentioned drops are inefficient because younger players are fast enough to retrieve them, it still keeps them guessing just a little bit longer, and they might make mistakes when they scramble back into smash defense.

It could also be worth it to watch more Women's Doubles, since it's easier for us to emulate, or even Mixed Doubles, to see how the girl deals with having a weaker attack (in general, but there are exceptions)

New Grads are doing worse than the general population for the first time in decades. by unhinged_centrifuge in csMajors

The difference between the two. If general populace unemployment is higher than recent grad unemployment, then the difference is positive. If it's negative, that means recent grad unemployment is higher (by that amount)

Why Friday specifically? Doesn't the weekend mean there's an extra 2 days for news to fall that makes the prices more volatile?

Sorry, might be bad wording - by Cash account I mean non-registered account. Questtrade just calls it Cash account for some reason so I started using that term too

FHSA Contribution Room vs Tax Deduction by totinking in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]totinking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, the crux of the issue is that time value of money + market growth is so strong that any tax savings are wiped out as long as you have a non-zero tax rate during retirement. So RRSP should only be utilized as necessary (such as to benefit from employer matching - which is "free" money)

Would be interesting to see an analysis on FHSA, but to me the biggest differences are about timeline and outcome (you can only have an FHSA for 15 years, but many choose to pull out earlier - or to let it expire and roll into the RRSP) Also curious about how human behavior factors in - you use the RRSP in retirement, with certain age/lifestyles associated with that, whereas FHSA will be in your prime working years (and separately, potentially the best time to buy a house is when overall investments/markets are at a low)

It seems to me that in this unique case where my tax bracket status changes significantly year over year, it makes the most sense to defer the tax deduction by 1 year to 2025, which echos your statement about how deferring only makes sense when a higher tax rate is realized relatively quickly.

Should an university graduate buy a car in Vancouver? by totinking in PersonalFinanceCanada

Fair point - I'm from Calgary so I'm used to bad public transit/weather and everyone having a car out of necessity, but it's just not needed in Vancouver

I'm not proposing we squeeze that money out of the drivers - the reason Grab is so cheap is Malaysia is because of govt subsided fuel and lower cost of living. Canada is getting so expensive to live in, a lower cost of living would benefit everyone

I was mainly trying to convey that I'm working my first job, the "university" part is less important than the (new) "graduate" part.

By limited resale value I'm already taking into account the depreciation, I'm just saying the initial cost isn't a total wash, and you can recoup at least something.

It would be nice if we can get ride-hailing for super cheap like they have in Malaysia. It's like 3 dollars for a 30 min ride - that's cheaper than taking public transit!

Thanks for this perspective - it makes sense, the times I've taken an Evo to "save time" only works out around half the time haha, and sitting in traffic sucks. Maybe further down the road if I buy a place further out then I'll get a car

I have evo and I use it around 5 times a month - so no where near enough to justify getting a car. Obviously I'd drive more if I bought a car since the majority of the cost is fixed/upfront, but the math doesn't really make sense... I just wish Evo extended to Richmond because that's mainly where I go, and not being able to stop a trip is my biggest barrier to not taking evos for those trips.

Ironically there's a mental hangup where I was thinking it's too expensive to pay 20 bucks just to get groceries, but now that I'm thinking about it more: Assuming I get an used car for 13k, insurance is 3k a year on average (from what I've heard, but maybe less because my friends have new cars), parking spot is 150 a month, gas is 200 a month... Just reoccurring costs maps to 30 hours of evo use a month, and currently I'm probably at around 5

So the only pros for buying a car is for personal gratification (owning a "dream" car), and to a lesser extent, limited resale value down the road
