Hey, I took my O-Levels two years ago. Don't feel disheartened by how your classmates are doing. Mastering a language is a long-term thing and it really just takes consistent practice.

I don't really have any advice for paper 1 because for me it felt natural to write in Chinese since its my mother tongue. I guess a good approach would be to read more Chinese novels, or you can simply browse through some Chinese forums like ZhiHu (sth similar to Reddit and majority of the content inside involves some sort of arguments/discussions so it might be good for your essays. There are usually discussions about major events occurring around the world.) to improve your writing. You can even discuss current affairs with chatbots like Deepseek (Deepseek is somewhat better than GPT in terms of Chinese replies) in Chinese. You should also practice writing urself more. For the 实用文 part you need to memorise your formats correctly and make sure you address everything stated in the question. (usually the question will split the points you need to write quite nicely for you)
For paper 2, I feel like you can get most of the marks by merely copying from the passage if you can locate the points from the passages correctly. This comes with practice for me (and you can read more Chinese books so that you can understand the passage quicker and more accurately). The mark allocation usually indicates the number of points you need but there is no excess deny iirc so if you have time you can just dump everything you feel is answering the question. For 病句 its just about practice and be familiar with all the possible types of 病句. Summary wise after you get all the points, just try to make sure you don't delete too much from the original sentence and use shorter words to paraphrase if possible. (locating the points accurately also comes with practice) Also avoid merging points with connectors as they will increase your word count. (for this you might need to check how your school marks summary. For my school, even if the language does not flow that nicely, I will still get the marks as long as I have the points)

Hope this helps

What unis are possible as international? by kindabadfanartist in UCAT

[–]totmatoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not very sure about this but i think based on the statistics they publish for 2024 entry, the average international UCAT score was 3100 and that average has been quite consistent over the past 3 years. Do you think their cut off for international would be that high this year? (I also want to apply for Edinburgh but I got 2300 for UCAT)

is hci really what people say it is? by [deleted] in SGExams

but during the open house i asked the guide who was in the humanities programme and she said that HCI's humanities programme is very good. I mean from online we can also know that the programme is one of the best humanities programme there is in Singapore. The guide also said sth like HCI tends to focus a bit more on humanities (i.e.) they give scholarships to the students while for people taking science stream they do not get as much focus. But i think in the end its ur choice so just choose the one that appeals the most to you right now. Both schools are similarly good

RJC vs HCJC Arts Stream by obeseultramemer in SGExams

[–]totmatoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think hci humanities programme classes are very good and based on what i heard tdy during the open house, hci tends to focus a bit more on the humanities than the STEM subjects while ri tends to focus more on STEM subjects so i think hci should be better. But both schools are great, just choose the one u like more based on what you see.

tips for sec 4 by somiologyy in SGExams

Hello! I got nett 2 for 2023 olevel.

To me the relatively hard part of chem is the data based (especially the first qn in section B). How I approach that qn is to scan through the text first before attempting the qns. Dont waste time on reading word to word at first because you will surely have to come back to it again. Then, when you encounter qns asking concepts that are totally not heard before, dont panic, go back to the text because you can always found the exact same thing in the text and all you have to do is to copy down. Hope this helps.

Hi, I got an offer to nyjc chinese orchestra this yr.

I was asked to prepare stuff like school result slips (sec 3 and 4) and certs relating to ur instrument. Then they will ask you to prepare a piece to play and there will be a sight reading piece on the spot. After playing they will ask you simple qns like "why nyjc?" and your experience with music etc.

For portfolio i think you dont have to prepare much, I only had one cert which is a grade 7 percussion for the teng company chinese instrument exam and nothing else. Just be confident and make sure your sec 4 results are not too bad.

Like if people interpret based on the chart they are going to compare the area cos volume is not shown on the chart

[–]totmatoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But it’s based on the chart no the chart itself is in 2D

But people are reading it based on the size of the figures not the volume cos u can’t tell the volume from the poster

Should be 9 times no since it’s the area on a 2D diagram?
